Restaurant Rhino

February 26, 2012

Good morning!! We are well rested and full of coffee! I’m being a lot more conscious of caffeine and had half a cup of regular made in our room followed by about 3 cups of decaf at breakfast.

We slept well, and woke up around 6:30am to open the balcony door for some fresh California air! It’s not too cold out there and feels great!

And the morning gloom is just beginning to burn off.

We walked through the hotel and downtown to find a good spot for breakfast.

This hotel is so famous and cool!

We settled into a spot called The Rhinoceros Café

The decaf! The café had excellent service – my mug was never empty.

I had my favorite vacation breakfast: plain yogurt with granola and fruit.

This granola tasted amazing! I couldn’t help to eat every last crumb because it was that delicious.

So was the fruit! Love it when banana is included in a fruit bowl

Karen got a fancy entrée of eggs with sausage, potatoes and a biscuit and shared a bite of her biscuit with me.

And Matt had the yogurt + fruit bowl with a biscuit on the side – plus 5 cups of coffee and some of Karen’s dish.

We’re going to celebrate the day with a bike ride on the island, and Convention activities begin this evening. We’ve already ran into a handful of owners we know!

Oh, I love having balconies when I stay at a hotel – so luxurious! The breakfast food looks amazing. Enjoy the bike ride!!

3 Kelly February 26, 2012 at 1:26 pm

The Rhinoceros Café is one of my favorite restaurants in Coronado! Great choice :)

4 Angel7 February 26, 2012 at 1:27 pm

A bike road on the island sounds so nice–so relaxing!

5 Khushboo February 26, 2012 at 1:28 pm

That breakfast is exactly my holiday order too- sometimes I’ll ask for a side of egg whites too!

6 Katie @ Peace Love & Oats February 26, 2012 at 1:32 pm

I love all the rhinos everywhere! And my mom always buys fruit salad from the grocery store, and then chops up a banana to add in! God bless her.

7 Sana February 26, 2012 at 1:33 pm

Lol, sooo much coffeeeeeeeeeee.

8 katie @KatieDid February 26, 2012 at 1:36 pm

gorgeous location, I’ve visited the Coronado and dreamed of staying there before. Just a casual 5 cups of coffee for Matt haha!

9 Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table February 26, 2012 at 1:38 pm

California has the best food in the world. I had life-changing granola last time I was out there – now I wish I’d beat down the kitchen door for the recipe!

10 Fran@ Broken Cookies Don't Count February 26, 2012 at 1:40 pm

Love it when I find yogurt and fruit on a menu. Doesn’t happen very often! Enjoy the del Cornado! I’m jealous!

11 Gina @ Running to the Kitchen February 26, 2012 at 1:40 pm

5 cups…Matt’s going to be jumping off the walls today!

12 Susan H. @ The Food Allergy Chronicles February 26, 2012 at 2:01 pm

What a super yogurt, granola and fruit breakfast…it all looks so fresh and healthy! Enjoy your bike ride!

13 Laura February 26, 2012 at 2:01 pm

FIVE cups of coffee? He must have an iron stomach! Totally jealous!

14 Mom February 26, 2012 at 2:10 pm

Sorry Dad’s not there to see all the rhinos (his favorite animal next to cats). Have fun!

15 Maria @ Sinfully Nutritious February 26, 2012 at 2:36 pm

What a wonderful weekend. I will be dreaming about that place. I cannot wait until spring hits here in PA. I just want to go camping, sit by a fire and drink coffee while watching sun rise. Don’t need much from life, that is my heaven. Followed by me making an unbelievable vegan breakfast, of course!

16 Paige @ Healthy Hits the Spot February 26, 2012 at 2:36 pm

Looks like you are having such a great time! Wow, I love seeing these posts! I also love when banana is included in the fruit bowl. Also, I can only imagine that if I couldn’t drink Caffeine, I would be all over that decaf coffee, too! Coffee is so warm and comforting. Have a great day with your family & riding bikes! How fun!

17 Joss February 26, 2012 at 2:39 pm

that yogurt and fruit bowl looks delish 😀

18 Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries February 26, 2012 at 2:40 pm

i always drink so much more coffee when i’m out for breakfast than i normally do at home… when they’re constantly refilling my mug, i just keep on sippin! :)

19 Cara Craves... February 26, 2012 at 2:50 pm

A great way to start the day!
Mine started with granola as well :)

20 Jen February 26, 2012 at 3:14 pm

That’s a lot of coffee – wow! How do you guys hold so much? I find after just a cup I’m full and have to make several bathroom trips shortly after!

21 Casey @ OatsAndNanners February 26, 2012 at 3:14 pm

I’m from the Del Mar/Coronado area and I always tell people they have to visit Point Loma Seafood (close to the airport) or The Hash House (which is famous for their Las Vegas location — but there is one in Hillcrest!) ENJOY SAN DIEGO!!!

22 Lisa (bakebikeblog) February 26, 2012 at 3:15 pm

what a delicious start to the day!

23 Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga February 26, 2012 at 3:16 pm

Sounds like the day is off to a good start. Glad you had great service and bottomless cups of coffee. The Hotel Del is beautiful and the day has gone from cloudy to sunny to sort of gray-ish but not awful…hopefully the weather holds up for you guys while you’re in town.

24 Kerry @ Totes My Oats February 26, 2012 at 3:30 pm

You guys fueled up with a yummy breakfast and enough coffee for sure! Enjoy your day!

25 kathleen @ the daily crumb February 26, 2012 at 3:35 pm

that hotel is gorgeous!! enjoy your sunshiney day :)

26 Kristen @ Change of Pace February 26, 2012 at 3:40 pm

I love eating breakfast out because it’s kind of hard to mess up breakfast food. This sounds like a perfect way to start the day! :)

27 Christine @ Oatmeal in my Bowl February 26, 2012 at 4:01 pm

…And is famous for a couple of haunted rooms {spooky}. Have a great bike ride.

28 jk February 26, 2012 at 4:28 pm

You just can’t beat the Hotel Del. We have stayed there before and it was just great.
San Diego is a great city. Do you have time for the zoo? It’s great as well.
Have a fun time.

29 JessicaE February 26, 2012 at 4:50 pm

Haha before I was pregnant I could easily drink 5 cups of those little restaurant mugs of coffee :)

30 Sneakers2Sandals February 26, 2012 at 5:03 pm

I’m thinking of cutting back the caffeine also. Prob good idea for the little bun in your oven !

31 Lauren @ Oatmeal after Spinning February 26, 2012 at 5:11 pm

I’m totally fine with decaf- I just like a hot drink, period! I go in phases with caffeine, but can do without it just fine (and should probably do without it anyway!)
The breakfasts all look so wonderful! I have a typical “vacation breakfast” too- but it’s just toast with almond butter, honey and bananas (easy to make anywhere!).

32 Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife February 26, 2012 at 5:12 pm

What a fun weekend! A plate of fruit sounds fantastic to me too!

33 Caitlin February 26, 2012 at 5:16 pm

congrats on your pregnancy. I haven’t had a chance to comment yet! :)

34 KathEats February 26, 2012 at 6:42 pm

35 marie February 26, 2012 at 5:29 pm

Karen’s breakfast plate looks so good. Totally what my choice would have been!

36 Cait's Plate February 26, 2012 at 5:34 pm

I’m impressed with Matt’s eating – but more so with his coffee drinking! He’s a man after my own heart :)

37 Stacy @ Say It With Sprinkles February 26, 2012 at 5:38 pm

It’s funny I just read this post about your granola for breakfast when I was debating what flavor granola to make next not 5 minutes ago! Granola on the brain! =)

38 Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin February 26, 2012 at 6:27 pm

I think I would have ordered exactly what you did! I’m never lucky enough to find yogurt + granola on restaurant menus around here though. 😛

39 Amelia February 26, 2012 at 7:37 pm

My relatives used to run the Hotel Del and until a couple years ago we had a family cottage on the beach right next door — it was so simple and amazing and I’m so sad it’s gone! (replaced by hotel villas – boo). But of course Coronado runs deep in my soul and I just love every minute I spend there!!

I recommend the Brigantine fish tacos if you happen to end up there!

40 KathEats February 26, 2012 at 7:38 pm

Wow so cools

41 Michelle (Better with Berries) February 26, 2012 at 7:56 pm

Granola with yogurt and fruit is my favorite vacation breakfast too! Whenever there’s a parfait on the menu, I can’t not order it.

42 J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) February 26, 2012 at 9:07 pm

Your vacation breakfasts make me want to fly to the nearest tropical island.

43 Nicole (MyLoveForCooking) February 27, 2012 at 9:26 pm

Everything looks so tasty. My lovie would flip for the fruit plate, complete with bananas! :)

44 Lexi @ Cura Personalis Foodie February 29, 2012 at 11:16 pm

I’ve been craving biscuits lately! Maybe I’ll have to take a line from you and have one with a bowl ‘o fruit :)
