One For Me, One For Banana

August 19, 2011

IMG_0027 (450x600)
I slept really well last night except for the HURRICANE of a night sweat that occurred early this morning. I used to get night sweats a lot, but I think gaining back a little weight in 2009 cured them (I think it was too low estrogen). I never get them any more – except in hotels!!

My room temp is set to 61 degrees (it’s pretty chilly in here) so I got under all the covers and woke up absolutely drenched. Sopping. I had to completely go to the other side of the bed (too bad I had a full instead of a king!) and somehow managed to dry off. Tonight I guess I’ll have to remove a blanket. Night sweats are so weird because you don’t wake up until you’re soaked. It’s not a light sweat, it’s a river.

Otherwise, a good morning!

IMG_0026 (600x450)

I picked up an Awake Tea Misto from the Sbux in the lobby

IMG_0032 (600x450)

And combined that with a banana I brought from home and a packet of Barney Butter from the extra swag stash!! Long time no see, BB!

IMG_0030 (600x450)

One for the banana..

IMG_0034 (450x600)

One for me!

IMG_0035 (600x450)

I’m sporting my Five Bamboo HLS hoodie this morning as Hangry and I go to yoga! Five Bamboo sent the 5 of us founders these hoodies – they are unbelievably comfy!

IMG_0040 (450x600)

Peace out!

LOVE the HLS hoodies! Can’t wait to keep up with HLS through pictures

2 Brittany (A Healthy Slice of Life) August 19, 2011 at 7:47 am

The hoodies are super cute- love the color!

Have fun at yoga and I hope the night sweats don’t make a return tonight :)

3 Katherina @ Zephyr Runs August 19, 2011 at 7:49 am

That hoodie is sweet. I was hoping to win it from Meghann! These HLS updates are fun but totally make me wish I were there. Next year!

4 Hillary August 19, 2011 at 7:49 am

Love everything about the hoodie—fit, color, everything! I’m also hoping to win one from Meghann ; )

5 Claire @ Live and Love to Eat August 19, 2011 at 7:52 am

Adorable hoodie – I love your honesty! :)

6 Lisa @ Sunny Seed Stories August 19, 2011 at 7:53 am

I am loving the hoodie as well! I think I will go found something now as well, so that I can get one. 😉

7 Meaghan O'Connor (My Spoonful of Inspiration) August 19, 2011 at 7:53 am

Love the blue hoodie! Have fun at the conference! :)

8 Sweet and Savvy August 19, 2011 at 8:00 am

I’ve never had Barney Butter.. I need to get my hands on some of that stuff! Have a great day at HLS! :)

9 Casey August 19, 2011 at 8:00 am

Ack…night sweats are the worst. Usually only my shirt gets soaked, but I have heard some people have to change their sheets in the middle of the night. Ahhhh! I actually went to the doctor to get some blood work done when I started getting regular night sweats about 8 months ago. All the tests came back normal. My doctor said it could be stress related, but I still think that it is hormonal (even though they checked them).

I haven’t been getting as many lately…thank goodness!!

10 Katelyn August 19, 2011 at 1:39 pm

Yes, me too!!!! I didn’t think anyone ever got these too, I feel so much less strange knowing that I am not the only one! I went to the doctor and had blood work and chest xrays done too (apparently it’s a symptom of lymphoma, yikes!) and nothing came back abnormal either. I’ve never heard it could be related to estrogen?? I used to get them every single night, but now that you mentioned it, I guess I was quite a bit skinnier then too… hmmm…. weird?

11 Casey August 19, 2011 at 2:57 pm

Yep, they did a chest x-ray on me too, but it came back okay.

12 Stephanie C August 19, 2011 at 6:44 pm

I’m glad to read about this on the blog and this comment! I’ve been getting them recently and I’ve NEVER had them before.. hormones make a lot of sense. I’m reluctant to want to get it checked out as my insurance doesn’t need another reason to jack up my rates again 😉

13 Julie H. of Spinach and Sprinkles August 19, 2011 at 8:01 am

I get them too! —which is weird because I am the *coldest* person I know! It only happens once in a great while but when they happen I HATE the waking up feeling gross! ‘
That hoodie looks like it is soooooo comfortable!

14 Angela (Oh She Glows) August 19, 2011 at 8:02 am

Oh Barney buttahh… I wish I could find it in Canada!

15 Jennifer August 19, 2011 at 8:31 am

Yes! Agreed! We are deprived! :(

16 Meredith August 19, 2011 at 12:03 pm

I agree! Although it might be a good thing we don’t have it :), I think I would go a little overboard with it :).

17 Angela (Oh She Glows) August 19, 2011 at 12:06 pm

If I remember correctly, the first time I tried it I ate a whole tub in 1 week… 😉

18 Meredith August 19, 2011 at 12:44 pm

😉 that definitely sounds like something I would do (and have done… Dark Chocolate Dreams is a dangerous thing to have in my cupboard!).

19 Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga August 19, 2011 at 8:05 am

I was sent a Five Bamboo skirt and I hosted a giveaway for them a month or two ago…LOVE Their stuff. Great company, great products…and yes, so soft!

Night sweats in hotels…sorry you had a time of it. My theory with that is that when I travel/airplanes, I retain fluids and then at night it all comes out…for me, it’s usually multiple trips to the little girls’ room. Just my own theory but it happens to me pretty much every time I ride planes. I guess you just sweat it out :)

20 Luv What You Do August 19, 2011 at 8:07 am

I LOVE an Awake Tea Latte, but I’ve never tried the misto. What’s the difference?

Have fun today!!!

21 KathEats August 19, 2011 at 9:45 pm

I think a misto has less milk?

22 Laurel August 22, 2011 at 11:26 am

There isn’t a difference. They just started trying to sell more by marketing them as Tea Lattes, using fancy tea bags. They’re essentially the same thing: tea bag, 1/2 water, 1/2 steamed milk. Lattes get topped off with foam.

23 Lynda @ healthy hoboken girl August 19, 2011 at 8:08 am

Can’t wait to see you at HLS! Have a wonderful time at yoga.
On my way to Philly today, woo-hoo!!

24 Trainer Kjirsten @ Balanced Healthy Life August 19, 2011 at 8:20 am

Night sweats would be horrible. I’ve gotten them a few times but I think that was from having colds. Hopefully you sleep better tonight! I can’t believe your room was at only 61 degrees! Brrrr! We sleep with our AC at 76 degrees and I normally wake up freezing and shaking in the middle of the night! Have fun at yoga!

25 Sonya August 19, 2011 at 8:23 am

Mention of profuse night sweats in a hotel bed made me wonder. Will I ever sleep in another hotel bed without freaking out?! I don’t know. I think I might have to find a bed cover that has a protective lining to take along. But, that does not sound very efficient for travel by plane. Yikes!

26 Khushboo August 19, 2011 at 8:27 am

Gosh that banana looks ace- love black bananas!

27 Jennifer August 19, 2011 at 8:35 am

haha…you know, I am like a little kid when it comes to bananas. I love them….yellow, but the minute I see a brown spot, I’m done. The texture changes and they become to sweet for my taste. Anyone else like that or just weird me? :)

Glad you got to take in the historical sights. Philly definitely has a lot of those.

Never experienced a night sweat before. Interesting.

28 Elisabeth August 19, 2011 at 10:10 am

Nope – I’m like that too with black bananas! They get waaaayyyyy too sweet when they get spotty. :(

29 Kelly August 19, 2011 at 10:46 am

I’m with you also. Not that they are to sweet, but too mushy. I like bananas but they have to be perfect or I’m done, they will gross me out. I could maybe freeze that one for a smoothie!

30 Johanna B August 19, 2011 at 12:58 pm

I like ’em with lots of brown spots but not black. I make banana bread with the black ones.

31 Jillian August 19, 2011 at 2:02 pm

I’m the same way- not a single brown spot! I like them just *barely* ripened. I usually have to make someone help me finish it if it has any spots- bananas are typically too sweet for me.

32 Hannah August 19, 2011 at 8:31 am

Barney Butter! I’m almost as envious of that as I am of the banana!

33 Maryea @ Happy Healthy Mama August 19, 2011 at 8:32 am

Have a great weekend, Kath!

34 Emily August 19, 2011 at 8:33 am

If you are prone to the night sweats, beware of the early days of breastfeeding. I woke up drenched the first few weeks after giving birth – it was one of the post pardum symptoms that surprised me most! Thankfully they only lasted a few weeks!!

35 Cait's Plate August 19, 2011 at 8:42 am

Have fun at yoga! I really need to get some in my life SOON.

And so funny – I never knew low estrogen could cause night sweats! That’s really interesting to know!

36 Kate @ NaturaStride August 19, 2011 at 9:01 am

Yea – I never knew night sweats was linked to low estrogen either – good to know. I get them every so often – ugh!

37 Baking N Books August 19, 2011 at 8:44 am

I love the color – are they all the same colors?

Who are the original 5 anyways? – if someone cares to fill me in – thanks :)

38 Erin August 19, 2011 at 8:50 am

I *think* it is Kath, Meghann from Meals and Miles, Caitlin HTP, Heather from Hangry Pants, and Tina from Carrots n Cake. Though I’m pretty sure Jenna from Eat Live Run was a founder, too, but isn’t involved now.

39 Baking N Books August 19, 2011 at 9:32 am

Thanks Erin!. I thought it was always 6 so was wondering why they were only saying 5. I guess Jenna isn’t going this year.

40 Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table August 19, 2011 at 8:51 am

I get night sweats all the time! Did they give you anything to increase your estrogen levels?

41 Ashley @ Coffee Cake and Cardio August 19, 2011 at 9:01 am

Boo to night sweats. How did your estrogen levels change?

That hoodie is super cute! Have a great day in Philly!

42 Aine @ Something to Chew Over August 19, 2011 at 9:04 am

Love the hoodie, gorgeous colour!

Have a great day :)

43 Lindsey August 19, 2011 at 9:05 am

Love that hoodie!

44 Kate (What Kate is Cooking) August 19, 2011 at 9:13 am

When I struggled with binge eating, I used to get night sweats the night after a binge and it was terrible! Thankfully I don’t get them anymore unless I have a fever.

45 Maria @ Beautiful Busy Bee August 19, 2011 at 9:20 am

That looks like my kind of banana!!! I love spotted bananas so much. Other people say, old banana!! Let’s make banana bread! I say, I’ll wait a day then eat it. :) I’m so jealous you’re at HLS!!! I hope some year I’ll get invited to it.

46 katie @KatieDid August 19, 2011 at 9:37 am

I’ve only experienced night sweats in the dead heat of summer… and I’m not sure those even count since they are environmentally induced. But either way, not so fun. The hoodie is a great color on you! Have a blast at yoga.

47 Deva (Voracious Vorilee) August 19, 2011 at 9:42 am

love the hoodie! It looks super soft and comfy – perfect for fall weather!!

I am on a medication that has night sweats as a side effect. I get them every once in a while, which is a PAIN

48 Lindsay @ Lindsay's List August 19, 2011 at 9:46 am

Oh, Kath! I’m going to live vicariously through you this weekend (night sweats and all!) My blog goal is to be at HLS next year. Any clue what weekend that will be?

49 KathEats August 19, 2011 at 9:48 pm

No clue!!

50 fallingsnow August 19, 2011 at 9:49 am

I would like to know, please, how your nut butters always look so awesomely melty and runny. Mine are always big lumps in my dish. (I’ve even tried micro-ing them and just wind up as a warm lump – I still can’t get them all runny and yummy looking like yours!)
Please tell me…What’s the secret!?

51 KathEats August 19, 2011 at 9:48 pm

It’s just the choice of nut butter. TJ’s sunflower butter and Barney Butter are both drippy types. Naturally Nutty is not.

52 Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife August 19, 2011 at 9:50 am

oh those hoodies DO looks perfect! Have fun at yoga :)

53 Angel7 August 19, 2011 at 10:26 am

I want to buy something from Five Bamboo, because I am all about comfortable clothes, and especially lounging clothes :)

57 Lauren S. August 19, 2011 at 10:49 am

Yay for Philly! Where did you end up going for Yoga? I’ve been checking out Philly Power Yoga lately & love it, but am always looking for new challenges/classes.

I’m sure you’re swamped with the summit, but is there any chance you’re doing al meet-up while you’re in town? My friends and I are big fans. :)

58 KathEats August 19, 2011 at 9:49 pm

Philly Power Yoga is great.

I don’t have any plans for tomorrow night. Do you have a recommendation for a big group spot? I’m happy to meet you but just don’t know where!

59 Lauren S August 20, 2011 at 6:28 am

Are you looking for dinner or a drinks spot?
Continental- same owner as Alma de Cuba. Fun drinks. Lots of different cuisine.
Mixto- latin food with good mojitos
Both of those are in center city. Lots of options.

In south Philly, there is the South Philly Taproom. 16th and Mifflin. Great food and awesome beer list.

60 Jess August 19, 2011 at 10:59 am

Ack, I get night sweats too! But only in the winter when it’s cold out-I have no idea why.

Have fun at yoga!

61 Sara @ Real Fun Food August 19, 2011 at 11:03 am

I hope to someday be able to attend HLS. It would be awesome to meet other bloggers!

62 Brittany August 19, 2011 at 11:07 am

I’ve never had Barney Butter before but I need to try it! Naners + PB = best combo ever. Cute hoodie!

63 Sarah @ Sarah's Modern Bites August 19, 2011 at 11:09 am

Night sweats are so awful! I used to get them allll the time. I think it is definitely related to low estrogen. I used to have to chanage my clothes and sheets in the middle of the night. Yikes!Thankfully I don;t get them as much or as crazy gross as they were anymore.

However! If I drink Kombucha I am Guaranteed to get night sweats! So weird. maybe it’s my body detoxing??

Love the hoodie! I’m sure you’re in for a fab time! Hopefully I will be able to make it next year! :)

64 Ash @ Good Taste Healthy Me August 19, 2011 at 11:12 am

Looking forward to hearing more about the trip. Your night looked really fun in yesterdays post too!

61 seems soooo cold!

66 Dominique August 19, 2011 at 11:40 am

Not to be all personal (only loving concern) but when was the last time you had your glucose levels checked?

67 KathEats August 19, 2011 at 9:50 pm

I don’t have night sweats any more….but when I did, my blood levels were fine

68 Sarah@The Flying ONION August 19, 2011 at 12:04 pm

The hoodies look great! Lovin’ that color. 😀

69 Megan August 19, 2011 at 12:07 pm

I am so curious about night sweats and would love to hear any information you have on them! I get them ALL the time (probably about once per week on average, although sometimes they’ll be multiple nights in a row and sometimes I won’t get them for a few weeks). It is the same kind you described – sheets SOAKED (must change clothes and lay a towel down or change the sheets). I have many theories, but I’ve never been able to isolate the cause since all my “theories” happen frequently – could it be after I ate/ snacked too late at night, after I travel (I travel and sleep in hotels every Monday-Thursday for work), a hormone-related imbalance, a hard workout, body fighting off a cold or illness? Anxious to hear your feedback!!!! Thanks!

70 Marie August 19, 2011 at 1:37 pm

this post should have been titled “night sweats”!! I too, used to get some pretty unreal night sweats (change the sheets, etc.). This was when I was going through my eating issues, although I do occasionally get them, even now when I am doing so much better. I had never heard they were related to low estrogen … but it does make me wonder. Our hormonal balance is affected by so many variables… food, travel, stress, etc. I second everyone’s comments requesting more information!! Or maybe other readers have more info?
(and i also respect that this- as well as all other “body issues” can be such a touchy subject for many)

71 Casey August 19, 2011 at 3:06 pm

When I did an online search of “night sweats”, I read some scary stories, so I made sure to talk to my doctor about them. Two reasons my doctor gave me include a hormonal imbalance or a symptom of a chest infection. Both of those tests came back normal for me. I’m still not sure about the hormones though because when I was keeping track, the night sweats seemed to occur at certain times during the month. She also mentioned that it could be stress related…but isn’t everything stress related?!?

Some of the other readers mentioned that it could be related to food…I never thought of that one!

72 Shayla @ The Good Life August 19, 2011 at 12:13 pm

That’s interesting about the low estrogen and night sweats?! I also would love to know more information about that if you have any?

Can’t wait to read more about your fabulous weekend, have fun! :)

73 Michaela August 19, 2011 at 12:20 pm

sweating during the night is totally gross!! I absolutely hate it! I was sick the last days and I wanted to change my sheets during the night bc I was so grossed out… yuck.

74 Kristin August 19, 2011 at 12:32 pm

Have a fun time!

75 Lorin August 19, 2011 at 12:57 pm

Have fun at yoga! Btw, I tried your dough boy smoothie, it was delicious!

76 SaraRM August 19, 2011 at 1:03 pm

VERY INTERESTING!!! I have suffered with horrible night sweats for over a year! I definitely understand the “puddles”, not cool at all. Even when I went to my DR she didnt know exactly what would cause it, but I did have to switch BC bc my estrogen levels were way too low. So that makes complete sense now!! Kinda not sure how I feel about my dr now if its something as simple as that…

77 Mary @ Bites and Bliss August 19, 2011 at 1:22 pm

I get night sweats sometimes, too. They actually make sheets for athletes because they typically have night sweats due to their body recovering in the evening. The sheets are super duper expensive but they seem worth it!

78 Marie August 19, 2011 at 1:38 pm

any idea of the brand name?? so intersting- what will they come up with next?!!

79 Kathy W. August 19, 2011 at 2:15 pm

I get sweaty on any sheets that are a cotton/polyester blend, as most hotel sheets are. I need my 100% cotton sheets!!

80 Stephanie C August 19, 2011 at 6:48 pm

Hm.. I’m going to test this theory. I have a blend on my bed right now and will switch out to 100% cotton and see what happens. Anything to stop them! 😉

81 Jen@foodfamilyfitness August 19, 2011 at 2:18 pm

Ack! Hate night sweats!!! I had them all the time when I was pregnant. Sucks!!!

82 Lexi @ A Spoonful of Sunshine August 19, 2011 at 2:28 pm

Haha I love your method of “one for the banana, one for me.”

Except I might be too greedy to share with the banana 😉

83 Steph August 19, 2011 at 2:46 pm

The whole night sweat thing is pretty common in hotels. Most hotels have a motion sensor that controls the air conditioning- since you’re not up and walking around while you’re asleep, the air conditioner will usually kick off, leaving you super hot when you wake up. You might want to ask someone at the front desk to set the thermostat where you can adjust it manually instead of letting the thermostat and the motion sensor handle it. It usually takes just a second, and it’s so worth it to not wake up with a headache.

On another note, cute hoodie! Have fun!

84 KathEats August 19, 2011 at 9:51 pm

Very interesting about the sensor!!

85 Halley August 19, 2011 at 3:05 pm

I woke up drenched too, thinking about how many people probably sweat like this in hotel beds… they should probably put plastic liners down

86 The Healthy Engineer August 19, 2011 at 3:10 pm

Love love the color!!

Something about travelling and Starbucks just seems perfect to me 😀

Wowww night sweats? That must not be fun at all. That means you would also have to clean the sheets a lot more often!

87 kaila@ healthy helper blog! August 19, 2011 at 3:15 pm

Those sweaters are so nice! 5 Bamboo makes such quality gear!!!

88 M August 19, 2011 at 3:17 pm

testing one two three

89 M August 19, 2011 at 3:22 pm

Sorry bout the test, this website wouldn’t let me post a comment earlier. Just FYI, Kath and anyone else suffering from night sweats in their late twenties — PLEASE see your ob/gyn, tell them about this, and have a full workup done! I speak from sad, sorry experience — both my cousin and I are in early menopause. Night sweats can be an early indication that your estrogen levels are low, follicle stimulating hormone is getting higher, and that your ovarian levels are dwindling before their time, so it becomes very, very difficult to have a baby. We both suffered heartbreaking infertility — I was extremely lucky to have my one wonderful miracle child after years of emotionally devastating, painful, and expensive fertility treatments — but she wasn’t so lucky. I had perfect, textbook periods the whole time I was diagosed as being in perimenopause (in my thirties), so don’t use that as an indicator. PLEASE get checked out.

Hugs, M

90 Bec August 19, 2011 at 6:40 pm

I know two people that this happened too. One in her mid twenties and the other in her early thirties.

91 KathEats August 19, 2011 at 9:52 pm

I’m sorry to hear about your troubles M. I did talk to my doctor about it, and no longer have the sweats. I’m almost positive it was related to body fat.

92 Jackie August 19, 2011 at 4:16 pm

Your skin looks so fresh and radiant in this pic!

93 CJ @ August 19, 2011 at 4:37 pm

Sounds like you guts had an awesome time at lunch! I’m bummed I missed it!

94 Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin August 19, 2011 at 6:25 pm

I used to get night sweats all the time too! I hated having to change my bed sheets so often. 😛

If you still get them in hotels, it might be because they use polyester sheets – they don’t breathe as well as cotton!

95 shannon August 19, 2011 at 8:32 pm

I get horrible night sweats also….I have for about 5 years now and the doctors don’t know why??!! I am too young for menopause….hmmmm. I think that it is a “cycle” thing, that is what I have it narrowed down to. And I too get very very hot and wake up in a river of sweat. Anyway, you are not alone!! I’m happy to hear that I am not alone! Have a great trip.

96 Rosa - Fitness, Food, Fulfilled August 19, 2011 at 8:44 pm

Cute hoodie! Love the color on you.

HLS sounds like a blast. Hopefully I’ll be there next year.

97 KathEats August 19, 2011 at 9:47 pm

Re. night sweats:

I had my blood checked and talked to my doctor 2 years ago (when I was having the sweats) and she said it was likely a decrease in estrogen related to my weight loss. My hormone levels came back normal, but I had less fat than ever before and fat produces estrogen, so they are related. My doctor recommended taking Black Cohosh (a natural estrogen) which I did but didn’t really notice much difference. She said there wasn’t much else she could do other than replacement hormones.

Since gaining back a few to a comfortable maintenance level, I never have night sweats anymore – except in hotels! I blame the sheets…
