What a totally awesome day I have had!!!!!!
I had more Open Sky meetings and convinced the team you guys needed another coupon off anything in the store! Enter an authentic KERF promotion – all about 10.26!
Click here for an entry form to get a 10% OFF coupon delivered to your mailbox. And one person will win $26 OFF! Such pretty, pretty numbers!!
After finishing up at Open Sky (for now! I hope to be back in July for a longer trip!!!), I made my way uptown to my hotel, threw my stuff in the room and turned around and hiked back downtown to pick up Gena for dinner. Did you know Gena works in the SAME BUILDING as Open Sky!? What are the chances?!!?!?
Gena and I have been friends for a long time now – I helped her quit smoking a while back and we’ve done a few lunches together in New Orleans and NYC! And I will always be her friend for inventing banana soft serve! We seem to click well together, and we have the same palate!
After MUCH debate, we decided to set our dinner date for Angelica Kitchen! Go look at the menu. You will faint.
I am determined to eat my way through New York’s fabulous healthy Real Food restaurants. I can get Cod with Brown Butter anywhere – but you can’t get vegan, raw, interesting foods where I come from! (Or at least not like you can here!)
We had a 20 minute wait at Angelica’s so we decided to hit up Liquiteria, a juice bar around the corner, for a BOYB to dinner!
We settled on the Grasshopper, which seemed like it would go well with some fizzy mocktails: pineapple, pear, apple, wheatgrass & mint. It was divine – fruity with that green stink and just a slight bit of mint.
I was so bad and spent lots of moolah on these Vega Vibrancy bars. I just love them and the Vega store finder suggests they are not available in Charlotte. I should have just ordered them from the Vega site though, because they were much more $$ in NYC than online! Oops!
We bought a club soda and headed back to Angelica’s where the staff was happy to seat us – and wanted to be on the blog!
Mocktail creation
I can’t wait to re-create this at home with my own juicer!
Gena and I shared the Walnut-Lentil Pate with crudites for an appetizer while we perused the menu (it took forever to decide what to get!). The dill sauce on top was out of this world!
I decided on a tasting plate of specialties -
Roasted root veggie salad with dill
Smoked marinated tempeh (in the back!)
Kimchi! And totally different than the one I had at the farmer’s market, but so good too!
Plus a side of millet, which was cooked in carrot juice and SO GOOD!! Emily, you must try this!
Gena‘s plate was gorgeous! Salad, tempeh, cauliflower and hummus. (She shared some hummus + pita with me!)
I cleared my plate!! (Minus a little millet)
After dinner we hot-tailed it in a cab to meet a few blog readers at the Flatiron Lounge. All I wanted was a Manhattan!! This drink was stra-ong! I only finished about 2/3 of it, but it hit the spot.
I don’t have a group photo because the lighting was SO very dim, but I had a great time talking to Shane and Maggie.
Maggie writes for the DailyLit, which is a website that sends good reads to your email inbox or RSS reader each day. I’ve got to get on that bandwagon! She gave me a fun cookbook to check out!
We called it a night around 10:00 and Gena and I shared a cab back to my hotel. Instead of breaking out some drugs in the back of the cab, we broke out young coconut drink from Bonobo’s!!
*** Permission to Squeal ***
WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW. The most incredible drink!!!!!! Like egg nog and melted ice cream together plus 10,000 rainbows and puppies. Ingredients: young coconut, spices, agave. We were moaning with pleasure with every sip. I only had about 3 and was totally filled with happiness. If you are ever in NYC, you MUST try this! I’ve got it in an ice bucket so I can savor it some more in the AM.
Speaking of the AM….
NYCers: KERF meet-up tomorrow at 12:30PM at Chelsea Market outside of One Lucky Duck. BYO lunch! We’ll plan to find a spot to eat in the Highline or public areas.

Looks like another great restaurant! Glad ya had a good time today:)
So cool that you got to hang with Gena!!
Wait, drugs? What…?
JOKING. Just saying some people do drugs in cabs. I do coconut juice.
Lol I don’t think anyone does drugs in cabs Kath….:) You’d do ‘em at the club or at the party or at home!
Kath– I was totally in Union Square this afternoon! What are the odds?
Also, if you’re meeting up at Chelsea Market tomorrow, you should grab lunch at the restaurant I work at, which is right nearby. It’s called The Simple Kitchen, and we have all organic and locally sourced meals and treats. All the produce comes from the owners farm in Connecticut! It’s on 17th St. and 9th Avenue. The food is AMAZING!
Enjoy the rest of your trip!
Wish we’d see each other!
I’ll put Simple Kitchen on my list! Will check it out if I have extra walking time
I just missed you!
I was in NYC for a panel discussion this morning so I went up last night, but left around 3 pm today. Boo! I’m planning on going back up in June or July so maybe our paths will cross then…? I can only hope
So happy to have gotten to meet you! I had a great time chatting with you guys as well. As I mentioned the Emeril book may be a little too carnivorous for your taste but I’m hoping you might find some flavor ideas/inspiration. Enjoy the rest of your time in NYC!
Glad you’re having a great time in NYC!
Come to SF!
THE HIGHLINE!!????? I am sooooooo insanely jealous!! My architecture thesis site WAS the highline!! I went to NYC twice during my thesis to do research and spent all of my time walking up + down the streets surrounding the highline. I even snuck up while it was still under construction…I have some pictures from that which are pretty cool…I was by myself and totally could have been sent to jail! I loooove chelsea market especially the store “The Milk Bar.” Have you been there yet?? There is also an amazing “slow food” restaurant in the CM as well…plus ooooodles more as you know
I get so excited about NYC…..xo
OH COOL!! I will think of you and take photos!
Liquid crack! Liquid heaven! Better than liquid gold!!!
I am so, so, so happy you love the chai as much as I do. No surprise there. Had such a fun day and dinner!!! Sweet dreams and see you again in a few months
XOXO
aw, I was working in Jersey while you were enjoying your day in the city.
Looks like you a great time!
I’m glad to see that you’re a fan (I think?) of kimchi. I’m Korean, and I really recommend eating real authentic homemade kimchi. My Dad’s kimchi is amazing. There really is a difference!
Apparently, there are many health benefits to kimchi – especially for your intestines.
Have you been to Candle Cafe? That’s another great vegetarian restaurant in the city.
So many people have also recommended Red Bamboo (vegan soul food), which apparently has the best faux buffalo wings in the city. If you’re a dessert/cupcake person, I’ve got great recommendations. I’ve been to most of the best places in the city! I’m a cupcake freak.
Enjoy the rest of your trip here!
Fun! Thanks for the recs! Please email me the cupcakes! Perhaps my next trip?
What a fun fun day!!! Such amazing eats too
Ahhhh you make me wanna hop on a bus and go to NYC!! I think I’m gonna go after graduation since a bus runs from DC to NYC for $15 (cool, huh?) and my BFF’s grandparents have an empty apartment in Manhattan. Don’t ask why
You got me all excited now.
Empty apt! You should LIVE here for a while!
I wish I could join in on the fun! But I don’t get back into NYC till tomorrow at 4:30.
I am definitely trying that coconut drink as soon as I arrive though. Wowee, how could I not after your reaction to it!
I haven’t been to a lot of the veggie-centric places in NYC because my BF is such a meat and potatoes guy and none of my friend are really into that kind of eating/ don’t want to spend the money. Hopefully I’ll get to go to some soon!
It looks like you’re having such a great time!! I would totally hit up all the raw/vegan restaurants if I was in NYC. You should try to re-create the coconut chai so I can make some lol
next time you’re near the flatiron get a burger from the shake shack in madison square park!
Hey, which of those places did you snag the Vega Vibrancy Bars? I’ve been looking everywhere for them.
At Liquteria
hey kath!
Which variety of the vega vibrancy bar is your fave? Im trying to decide which to try and you have buy them in packs of 12 online!
thanks!
I really can’t tell much of a difference between them!? But I’d say maybe the light green is milder than the dark?
thats the one I selected… thank you!
PS- Your jacket is amazingly cute! I know you’re asked the inevitable question all the time, but, where’s it from?
Loehmann’s!
“Instead of breaking out some drugs in the back of the cab, we broke out young coconut drink ” BEST LINE EVER!
Woowww NYC is so beautiful! I love the buildings, and you’re so lucky to get to go to such amazing, unusual restaurants! One very jealous blogger here….
That sounds and looks so awesome.
Also, New York… still jealous!
What an amazing day! AND WOW I’m excited about this coupon! Okay so my birthday is in a month and a half…I think the Vitamix might be justified now, no? Hmmm going to see what I can do
I’m dying to have one and I really think, with the coupon, that this is the cheapest I’ve found it.
You won’t regret it!!
Wow reading through that menu made me hungry!!!! I wish I lived in the US so I could give it a try! lol
We don’t have many specialty raw/health food restaurants in Australia. I;m envious of all the awesome places you get to dine at in the US!
That coconut drink sounds AMAZING! I wonder if a homemade version could be developed. Seems possible.
Alice

Aw..what a fun day! I totally wish we had restaurants like that where I live. Everything looks amazing and fresh!
ah, this reminds me why i love NYC so much! do you have a trip to candle cafe planned?
Next time!
I agree– I would so much rather try fun, RAW restaurants in big cities than fancy schmancy ones. Culinary adventure!
Kath, you really know how to get the most out of a trip! I love seeing all of your experiences! Thanks for sharing, as always!
You really MUST read this about agave! http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2009/07/02/Agave-A-Triumph-of-Marketing-over-Truth.aspx
I did and I don’t care! Sugar is sugar. There is not “healthy” sugar. I’ll continue to eat all sugars little by little!
Find me a store like that in ATL! I want to move to NY for the availability options. I’m 100% with you on vega being $$$. Remind me to eat healthy like you!
Katherine
Wow! what an amazing day filled with great eats. Everything sounds so good. I am glad you are enjoying yourself. so, when are you going to come to Minneapolis?
You are making me want to head to NYC asap!!!
Love this post!! Can’t wait for you to go back and visit opensky again!!!
Sounds like you are having lots of fun!
Love Angie’s Kitchen! Their kimchi is pretty delicious–although if you ever need something more spicy, Hangawi in Korea Town is one of my favorite restaurants in the entire world. So much amazing, delicious vegan Korea food.
HOLY MILLET! Yummmmmmmmmmm!! Do I have to spend my entire afternoon juicing carrots now? I found a yummy millet salad for Easter, but carrot millet is definitely next! Can’t wait to hear all about it tomorrow. Safe travels!
Am I the only person having trouble with the Open Sky coupon? I entered my e-mail address and pressed submit and it says “Please enter a valid e-mail address.” Mine is valid, I use it everyday!
Checking on this…
Thanks, I e-mailed customer service yesterday but I have not gotten a response yet, probably because its a weekend and/or a holiday weekend.
BAHAHAHAHA i love that you said “plus 10,000 rainbows and puppies” – that SO made my morning!!! sounds like an absolutely amazing time in NYC so far!
The menu at Angelicas Kitchen looks AMAZING! I am so jealous. I will definitely have to try it out next time I am in New York. Have a great weekend Kath.
What a fantastic night!! Looks like you had a blast.
You should go see a show while you’re in town. I saw Rock of Ages last year and it was awesome!! Great music and a hilarious show.
What a great time. I’m glad you are eating your way around NY and sharing such great finds.
Hhhhmmm, the open sky coupon form told me to enter a valid email address too, even though I did…
hahahah at the drugs comment. I got it!!
Sounds AMAZING Kath!!! So glad you’re enjoying yourself!
And that drink looks fantastic!
That coconut chai drink looks so good!!! What a great night!! Sounds like you’re having a blast
I loved Angelica Kitchen – it took us forever to order because we wanted one of everything! Definitely one of my favourite NYC meals.
I want to go there!!
OMG. So envious! And I love your blazer!
haha- the term is actually “hightailed”
Ha! Well I say it wrong then
Your coconut chai description had me laughing out loud… but I totally want to try it!!! Egg nog? Ice cream! Rainbows!? They should use that quote right on the bottle
. I want to head to NYC right now with this post!
Thank you so much! This is the most wonderful post for me right now. I don’t usually eat out in New York because I’ve always been by myself, and prefer hitting up Whole Foods, but ANjelixa’s looks worth the splurge! And now I know to search out that drink
Last thing – I love DailyLit! I read the whole of Wuthering Heights via Daily Lit at my receptionist job last year
I always get funky food while in NYC because everything is so different. I think I’ll have to try that place the next time I visit my friend Kara!
um, gena didn’t “invent” banana soft serve….it’s been around for yeeeeaars. i made it as a kid with my cousins almost 10 years ago, plus raw communities have been publishing recipes and variations for quite some time. she just made it popular.
ps: love liquiteria! too bad they’re so expensive
glad you’re having a great time in my lovely little town, wink wink!
The architecture of NYC just warms my heart! Can’t wait to move there this summer! Curious: what’s your fave building/monument in the city?
All that food is making me hungry!
xx
Charlie
The Flatiron Building!!! (why it’s always in my photos!) I think it’s just so very cool and reminds me of the olden days.
Yay! Thanks for including Angelica Kitchen on your blog. You and your friend Gena are so sweet! I am glad you had fun eating in NYC (and that you got your camera back). I am all about the coconut chai at Bonobo’s, but I haven’t had it in at least two years– that’s waaaayyyyy too long. I have to have some soon. Thanks for reminding me of it!
