Frosting Feast

February 20, 2012

Word from Bull City! There is no snow left on the ground, but it’s still really cold out there!

But not so cold that we didn’t want to go out for a walk. Anne P came over to catch up over an exercise date!

2012-02-20 17.02.11 (590x443)

We walked around East Campus for just over an hour. Very refreshing!

I came home to snack on a few sesame cashews from TJs (first time trying them!) and found two rice cakes which I topped with some peanut butter in Larbs’ pantry.

Mom and dad came over before dinner and we met up with Matt A., who had been excelling in business school all day.

We walked to dinner at Geer St. Garden!

Sadly beer was not on my menu for the night : (

The table shared a basket of fries to start. These were those really good crispy potato-tasting fries. With sweet chili oil and spicy mustard dipping sauces.

For the main event I was torn between the grilled pimento cheese and the chicken tamales. I ended up going with the tamales and Larbs shared a bite of her pimento cheese! My tamales were really good, but I tasted a bite of Matt’s veggie ones (which were filled with CHEESE) and his won the competition of taste.

One good thing about being with family who is just like you is that everyone was as enthusiastic for dessert – specifically vanilla butter cream wedding cake-style – and we must have spent 20 minutes debating where to go and what to order. Our first stop was Mad Hatter bakery, but they only had chocolate/mint/carrot cake and we three just love vanilla buttercream.

So stop #2 was across the parking lot to Whole Foods, which was also a bit disappointing on the vanilla front.

But we came home with a fine selection of mini cupcakes, mousse tart and lemon cake – plus defrosted pound cake from Larbs’ freezer. We all divided the desserts very well – frosting feast!

You know how after a week with a stomach flu food tastes REALLY good? That’s kind of what I’m going through right now.

This week has felt like Christmas week in terms of overeating. From Valentine’s Day to dinners out in Cville to too many Great Harvest treats to this trip full of cupcakes, I’ve just been eating so much every night that I’m feeling sick – and not from morning sickness! I think I’m just enjoying food again as I transition into the second trimester and my mouth is overcompensating for being so grossed out by food for so long. Lunches and snacks are healthier ;dinners [and desserts] are worse!

Hoping for a clean start tomorrow as I head back to Cville [although another vacation to the Great Harvest convention starts Saturday!]

It all looks good, especially those cupcakes! I say enjoy the little bit of culinary eats this week since you’ve been having a rough go with the morning sickness! It all evens out! 😉

Don’t you know by now to always choose cheese? I know people say pregnancy isn’t an excuse to ‘eat for two’ but you should really live it up. I mean, you’ve gotta gain weight anyways, right?

3 KathEats February 20, 2012 at 9:50 pm

Cheese wasn’t listed on the menu or I totally would have picked it!!

4 Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries February 20, 2012 at 9:50 pm

my family is full of dessert lovers too! :) love the looks of those cute little cupcakes!

5 kathleen @ the daily crumb February 20, 2012 at 9:53 pm

no beer = extra room for fries + cupcakes!

6 [email protected] for the Soul February 20, 2012 at 9:59 pm

Mmmm the tamales look soooo good!!!!

7 Kaila @healthyhelperblog! February 20, 2012 at 9:59 pm

I’ve never actually had a tamale!!! Must remedy that soon!!!

8 Gia February 20, 2012 at 10:00 pm

This made me giggle … my weird pregnancy craving was dipping nacho cheese Doritos into funfetti frosting :) It sounds gross now but Oh My did it make the babies happy!!

9 KathEats February 20, 2012 at 10:06 pm

Hahahha. I can imagine that and…anything in funfetti frosting would be delicious

10 Kellie February 20, 2012 at 10:32 pm

that just made me laugh. I loved oatmeal and pancakes with m&m’s mixed in them. They were the most horrible color from all the dye mixing, but at the time nothing tasted better. Funny the cravings you have

11 Stephanie @ Legally Blinde February 20, 2012 at 10:16 pm

I’m glad that food is tasting good to you again!!

12 Angel7 February 20, 2012 at 10:21 pm

If there is one thing I love and never really get sick of, it is french fries. French fries sound good now! I wish I had some great tasting french fries at my fingertips right now!

13 Joss February 20, 2012 at 10:23 pm

Things will straighten itself out on the eating front soon :)

14 Katie @ Peace Love & Oats February 20, 2012 at 10:27 pm

ahhh frosting is my favorite food ever!!! the cake is just a vehicle for frosting. And I’ve never had tamales, I’ve always wanted to try them though! When I was little I had a book about making tamales, a girl dropped her mom’s ring in the bowl and felt awful for losing it, then someone found it in their tamale! HAha no idea where that just came from…

15 Kellie February 20, 2012 at 10:30 pm

I remember being pregnant (all four times) and that food never tasted as good as it did when I was pregnant. I also remember that sometimes my appetite was never ending. I gained quite a bit of weight with all my pregnancies, but I lost it all. I guess what I am trying to say is your body is going to gain what it needs so relax and as long as your feel good, enjoy your pregnancy and the cravings that come with it!

16 Sana February 20, 2012 at 10:31 pm

:) I like your pregnancy cravings!

17 Lexi @ Cura Personalis Foodie February 20, 2012 at 10:34 pm

Mmmm cheese, and I repeat….mmm cheese 😀

Glad you’re enjoying food again!

21 Blessing {Working Mom Journal} February 20, 2012 at 11:35 pm

Man, you have such a great appetite for a pregnant lady. Enjoy!

22 Kavi February 20, 2012 at 11:36 pm

Dessert sampler… yum!

23 Cheryl @ eatplayluvblog February 20, 2012 at 11:58 pm

I’m on vacation and getting to that point too! I haven’t really had that much extra food or anything that out of the ordinary for me, but it just kind of adds up! Family time is always worth it :)

24 Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga February 21, 2012 at 12:14 am

Glad to hear your appetite has returned…that’s great. Enjoy it while it lasts because with pregnancy, every day is different and I’d be all over that frosting on those cupcakes!

25 Khushboo Thadani February 21, 2012 at 2:33 am

Yum eats- enjoy before morning sickness kicks in :)!

26 Michelle (Better with Berries) February 21, 2012 at 6:16 am

I wish my family would go for desserts after dinner! It’s pretty much just me and my little brother who are usually in the mood for dessert :-)

And I know exactly what you mean about food tasting so good the week after having the flu! Definitely true.

27 Simply Life February 21, 2012 at 6:57 am

I’ve actually never tried any of the bakery items at WF- maybe next time I’ll stop to look at them a little more!

28 Susan H. @ The Food Allergy Chronicles February 21, 2012 at 7:29 am

When I want a yummy vanilla cake…it’s pound cake all the way!I loved my grandmother’s Madeira Cake…she lived in England and knew how to bake a pound cake! It looks so plain and simple but the flavour is always Wow!

29 Anne P February 21, 2012 at 7:40 am

I heart exercise dates. Great seeing you and your baby bump :) Safe travels today!

30 Hope @ With A Side Of Hope February 21, 2012 at 8:15 am

All of those desserts look yummy! I love tasting plates like that. You get a little bit of everything :)

31 Molly @ RDexposed February 21, 2012 at 8:18 am

I’m eyeing your winter coat! And those beers…and the cupcakes a little, too.

32 Ashley @ Coffee Cake and Cardio February 21, 2012 at 8:43 am

It looks like you had a wonderful time! It’s so wonderful being able to spend time with family. Safe travels back to cville

33 Hillary February 21, 2012 at 8:50 am

I felt the same way this weekend—wayyyy too much indulgence. I realized that my boyfriend and I had two meals out, chocolate cake, banana bread, cinnamon buns, cookies, etc. It was overwhelming by the end of the weekend—and we compensated by having huge, colorful salads for dinner last night. I enjoyed every minute of indulgence, but feel good being “back on track” too!

34 Fran@ Broken Cookies Don't Count February 21, 2012 at 8:56 am

The good thing is, you always get to start over the next day! (Weight Watchers Wisdom!)

35 eliza February 21, 2012 at 9:21 am

Great meal with the fam :)

36 Lindsay @ Running the Windy City February 21, 2012 at 9:27 am

Those fries look so good! Especially with all of the dipping sauces! Yum!

And I know what you mean about feeling sick after constantly overinduling. It’s Restaurant Week in Chicago + Valentine’s Day and I’m definitely ready to lighten it up. I don’t need three-course meals multiple times per week (although my taste buds would tell you otherwise :P)

37 Cait's Plate February 21, 2012 at 10:20 am

You need to have a regular-clothes-buying, beer-and-wine-drinking party the minute you’re not pregnant anymore! I’ll buy 😉

38 Sarah February 21, 2012 at 11:26 am

“we three just love vanilla buttercream”

Does one of you not like it?

39 KathEats February 21, 2012 at 2:35 pm

Oh my dad loves it too, but he’s not obsessed like we girls are

40 Sam February 21, 2012 at 11:35 am

Oh man…next time you’re buying nuts at TJoes try the Thai chili lime cashews. They rock!

41 Marlow February 21, 2012 at 12:12 pm

I’m so glad you went to Geer Street! I’ve lived in Durham for two years, and Geer Street has become our new FAVORITE spot!

42 Katie February 21, 2012 at 12:23 pm

So true about food tasting so good after the 1st tri symptoms subside. I also went a little crazy when food tasted good again and had to remember to reign myself in! Still happening I must say. :)

43 Brie February 21, 2012 at 1:57 pm

I miss beer, too! I was pretty excited when I heard that drinking a beer was a good way to increase your supply if you’re breastfeeding…hopefully, I can make up for lost time then!

44 Angela @ Happy Fit Mama February 21, 2012 at 2:03 pm

Glad you’ve turned the corner with morning sickness and food is looking much more appealing.

A frosting feast is never a bad thing in my book!

45 lee February 21, 2012 at 2:41 pm

It makes me happy to hear someone else describe french fries as “potato-tasting.” People look at me strange when I say that about good fries or good homemade potato chips, but I love it when fries or chips have been prepared well-enough that the potato flavor is still there, even with any other spices (or in this case, dipping sauces). =)

46 Becca February 21, 2012 at 6:45 pm

And THIS is why I adore KERF. You notice indulgence and make note of it, aiming to “get back on track”, back to the regular routine. No panicking, no obscene dieting, no excessive exercising, no vowing to “never eat ___ again” …just rethinking the equation!

Thanks for being a normal human being who sometimes indulges and doesn’t go crazy about it!

47 KathEats February 21, 2012 at 6:47 pm

Thanks Becca 😉

48 jasper February 22, 2012 at 12:20 am

while I was at work at the DCRI you were right here on East Campus :)

49 Melissa February 22, 2012 at 8:09 pm

We also have a Mad Hatter bakery here in Newport, RI :)
