Frosting Feast

Word from Bull City! There is no snow left on the ground, but it’s still really cold out there!

But not so cold that we didn’t want to go out for a walk. Anne P came over to catch up over an exercise date!

2012-02-20 17.02.11 (590x443)

We walked around East Campus for just over an hour. Very refreshing!

I came home to snack on a few sesame cashews from TJs (first time trying them!) and found two rice cakes which I topped with some peanut butter in Larbs’ pantry.

Mom and dad came over before dinner and we met up with Matt A., who had been excelling in business school all day.

We walked to dinner at Geer St. Garden!

IMG_6457 (590x393)

Sadly beer was not on my menu for the night : (

IMG_6458 (590x393)

The table shared a basket of fries to start. These were those really good crispy potato-tasting fries. With sweet chili oil and spicy mustard dipping sauces.

IMG_6461 (590x393)

For the main event I was torn between the grilled pimento cheese and the chicken tamales. I ended up going with the tamales and Larbs shared a bite of her pimento cheese! My tamales were really good, but I tasted a bite of Matt’s veggie ones (which were filled with CHEESE) and his won the competition of taste.

One good thing about being with family who is just like you is that everyone was as enthusiastic for dessert – specifically vanilla butter cream wedding cake-style – and we must have spent 20 minutes debating where to go and what to order. Our first stop was Mad Hatter bakery, but they only had chocolate/mint/carrot cake and we three just love vanilla buttercream.

So stop #2 was across the parking lot to Whole Foods, which was also a bit disappointing on the vanilla front.

But we came home with a fine selection of mini cupcakes, mousse tart and lemon cake – plus defrosted pound cake from Larbs’ freezer. We all divided the desserts very well – frosting feast!

You know how after a week with a stomach flu food tastes REALLY good? That’s kind of what I’m going through right now.

This week has felt like Christmas week in terms of overeating. From Valentine’s Day to dinners out in Cville to too many Great Harvest treats to this trip full of cupcakes, I’ve just been eating so much every night that I’m feeling sick – and not from morning sickness! I think I’m just enjoying food again as I transition into the second trimester and my mouth is overcompensating for being so grossed out by food for so long. Lunches and snacks are healthier ;dinners [and desserts] are worse!

Hoping for a clean start tomorrow as I head back to Cville [although another vacation to the Great Harvest convention starts Saturday!]

It all looks good, especially those cupcakes! I say enjoy the little bit of culinary eats this week since you’ve been having a rough go with the morning sickness! It all evens out! 😉

Don’t you know by now to always choose cheese? I know people say pregnancy isn’t an excuse to ‘eat for two’ but you should really live it up. I mean, you’ve gotta gain weight anyways, right?

that just made me laugh. I loved oatmeal and pancakes with m&m’s mixed in them. They were the most horrible color from all the dye mixing, but at the time nothing tasted better. Funny the cravings you have

ahhh frosting is my favorite food ever!!! the cake is just a vehicle for frosting. And I’ve never had tamales, I’ve always wanted to try them though! When I was little I had a book about making tamales, a girl dropped her mom’s ring in the bowl and felt awful for losing it, then someone found it in their tamale! HAha no idea where that just came from…

I remember being pregnant (all four times) and that food never tasted as good as it did when I was pregnant. I also remember that sometimes my appetite was never ending. I gained quite a bit of weight with all my pregnancies, but I lost it all. I guess what I am trying to say is your body is going to gain what it needs so relax and as long as your feel good, enjoy your pregnancy and the cravings that come with it!

I felt the same way this weekend—wayyyy too much indulgence. I realized that my boyfriend and I had two meals out, chocolate cake, banana bread, cinnamon buns, cookies, etc. It was overwhelming by the end of the weekend—and we compensated by having huge, colorful salads for dinner last night. I enjoyed every minute of indulgence, but feel good being “back on track” too!

And I know what you mean about feeling sick after constantly overinduling. It’s Restaurant Week in Chicago + Valentine’s Day and I’m definitely ready to lighten it up. I don’t need three-course meals multiple times per week (although my taste buds would tell you otherwise :P)

It makes me happy to hear someone else describe french fries as “potato-tasting.” People look at me strange when I say that about good fries or good homemade potato chips, but I love it when fries or chips have been prepared well-enough that the potato flavor is still there, even with any other spices (or in this case, dipping sauces). =)

And THIS is why I adore KERF. You notice indulgence and make note of it, aiming to “get back on track”, back to the regular routine. No panicking, no obscene dieting, no excessive exercising, no vowing to “never eat ___ again” …just rethinking the equation!

Thanks for being a normal human being who sometimes indulges and doesn’t go crazy about it!
