Feeling That Gingerbread Feeling

December 16, 2010

I drove in snow for the first time when I took Karen to the doctor this morning. It was SCARY and I was slipping around. Not fun! Luckily we arrived and departed safely and I was home by 11AM and ready to go for a massive snow walk.

Karen, however, got stuck on our street when she left. Matt was able to help her out, but she ended up getting stuck on another hill on the way to her house and had to call AAA. Sounds like a snow day to me.

After Karen left, Matt and I bundled up for our walk and decided to walk downtown for LUNCH!

IMG_4972Blog IMG_4978Blog

All bundled up we were pretty hot inside our ski pants and jackets. And I am in LOVE with my Ugg Brooms I got from Fleece Footwear for my birthday. They are SO warm and I’ve been wearing them nonstop since winter hit!

Shortly into our walk we ran into……FAITH + TATE! Who else!?!

They had just come from downtown, but thankfully they agreed to walk there with us – and join us for lunch!!

We walked straight to Eppie’s! I had a major craving for the vegetarian plate complete with cornbread!

Black beans, sweet potato, collards

IMG_4993Blog IMG_4997Blog IMG_4992Blog

And that slab of cake-like corny bread. A faaaaablous warm filling lunch!! [I fit most of it but gave Matt a potato and Faith some of my cornbread]

On the way home the snow lightened up a bit and we walked F+T back to their house and kept on going towards the UVA grounds

Back at home, we’re sipping tea. That was nearly a 3 hour walk! Hoping to build a fire tonight and cozy up with something comforting for dinner. [Given the car troubles, I postponed my haircut : ( ]

the snow always looks so beautiful when it first comes down, great pics!

2 Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine December 16, 2010 at 4:14 pm

Yikes! It’s finally snowing up here too, but nowhere near as much as you guys have- hopefully it will be a white Christmas!! Stay safe and warm :)

3 Kelly December 16, 2010 at 4:14 pm

Beautiful! But how have you managed to avoid driving in the snow for so long? I wrecked my first car driving in the snow, but I’m a much more skilled snow-driver now.

4 Kath December 16, 2010 at 4:18 pm

My dad never let me! And I guess since then I’ve just been lucky and cautious.

5 Estela @ Weekly Bite December 16, 2010 at 4:16 pm

We’re getting lots of snow in Alexandria :) We’ve had the fireplace going all day :)

6 Stacy @ Every Little Thing December 16, 2010 at 4:16 pm

gah i would love to walk the mall in all that snow! so many good places for a homestyle lunch there.

7 Heather (Heather's Dish) December 16, 2010 at 4:19 pm

oh i am so jealous! what a beautiful snow day, and i’m so glad you guys really got to enjoy it :)

8 Holly @ couchpotatoathlete December 16, 2010 at 4:22 pm

I can’t believe you hadn’t driven in snow before — it definitely is nerve wracking the first time. We still have a ton of snow from over the weekend and it has been so cold that it is here to stay :(

Those sweet potatoes look so good. The perfect comfort food.

9 Ashley December 16, 2010 at 4:24 pm

Driving in the snow isn’t too bad as long as you use caution. We just got 10 inches with drifts in Wisconsin, and thankfully we are all dug out!

10 Angie @ Musings of a Violet Monkey December 16, 2010 at 4:27 pm

Lucky! I love to walk in the snow.
I can’t wait until we have our first snow day! All we had this morning was yucky ice in Charlotte. :(

I’m loving your new hat (I don’t say “toboggan” for a hat) 😉

11 Christin@purplebirdblog December 16, 2010 at 4:27 pm

I’ve only driven in snow once and it was definitely an event! And uhhhh, creepy jacket spider!

12 courtney December 16, 2010 at 4:28 pm

That lunch looks soooooo good on a snowy day! Or just a normal day :)

13 Kjirsten- Balanced Healthy Life December 16, 2010 at 4:28 pm

I love snow days! I am jealous and now want snow really really really badly! I’m not a fan of driving in it though!

14 Stacey December 16, 2010 at 4:30 pm

Aww, the snow looks so pretty! It’s supposed to snow in the UK too but I’m hoping it’s not going to be too bad as I have a flight to catch on Monday.

15 Jazz December 16, 2010 at 4:30 pm

Lol, we have atleast 3 feet of snow all winter here.. but I know it is hard for people who havn’t driven in it before, I just find it amusing how people who arn’t used to it react.

My hubby’s family is Texan and when I was down there last there was a few cm’s and everything shut down, people were driving into ditches.. I think they think more gas is good in the snow.. but it’s not!

16 Carrie H December 16, 2010 at 5:55 pm

I live in Wyoming and used to think like this too … I don’t know if it’s dry or generally more humid where you live, but it is very dry in Wyoming, but when places that are more humid get snow/cold temps, it immediately turns to ice. Realizing that kinda helped me understand the excitement/caution over what may only seem like a little snow to me! :)

17 Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) December 16, 2010 at 4:31 pm

I am jealous! Our days has just been filled with gloomy icy rain. YUCK. Enjoy your warm evening!

18 Michele @ Healthy Cultivations December 16, 2010 at 4:31 pm

I so LOVE a good snow day and cannot wait to visit home for Christmas so I can see some snow. This southern holiday thing may take some real getting used to.

19 Suzanne @ Continuing My Education December 16, 2010 at 4:32 pm

You are putting together a perfect list of places I need to visit when I am home. Enjoy the snow in Cville! They are pretty slow at plowing so it is a good thing you have alternative forms of transportation!

20 Dorry December 16, 2010 at 4:32 pm

FUN snow! It’s sunny and warm in Dallas and I’m ready for some wintry weather. That’s one of the best vegetarian plates I’ve ever seen. Yum.

21 Caree @ Fit-Mama December 16, 2010 at 4:35 pm

Oohhh how I wish it was snowing here in TX! We RARELY get snow. Last year was rare and we got a couple good snow falls (around 4 inches). They say because of el nino its going to be a dry winter for us, boo! I am from MD/VA so I like an occasional snow fall!!

22 Jazz December 16, 2010 at 7:15 pm

I’m going to Texas to avoid the snow! please stay warm! last year we went up and experienced that snow! booo.

23 Thealogian December 16, 2010 at 4:36 pm

So jealous of the snow, we had snow earlier in the week, but today we got ICE! Give me fluffy, pristine snow anyday over ice-rain. Sure, it looks pretty on the branches, but then the branches go-boom!

BTW, I gave my dad Matt’ t-shirt. Viva Evolution is great…great nerd gift.

24 Lisa (bakebikeblog) December 16, 2010 at 4:38 pm

What stunning snow pics – thankyou for sharing!!

25 Sarah @ See Sarah Graduate December 16, 2010 at 4:41 pm

Your pictures are amazing! :)

26 barefootgirl December 16, 2010 at 4:47 pm

so jealous!!! looks like SO much fun!!

PLEASE tell me you treated your Uggs before wearing them in the snow!! I ruined my first pair (back when they first came out) be careful how you dry them.. if the dry to quickly ( like next to a fire) the salt format eh snow will dry & leave a line in them….

glad to see you are feeling better 😉

27 Kath December 16, 2010 at 4:47 pm

Uh oh…

28 barefootgirl December 16, 2010 at 5:08 pm

my fingers are crossed for you :)

29 Krista December 16, 2010 at 5:29 pm

Yeah I was just going to add to that, you have to spray them with the protectant spray before getting them wet.

30 Lauren December 16, 2010 at 5:39 pm

I am a long-time reader, first-time commenter, but I decided you should know this information! I have washed my Uggs in the washing machine with a gentle detergent for delicates. Then air dry them (I put paper towels or washrags or something inside to keep their shape and absorb water). Then spray them with water-resistant spray. They always come out looking fresher and it gets rid of the water stains and salt stains.

31 Sam December 16, 2010 at 5:53 pm

Your boots came with scotchgard protection on them:)

C says there is a discount code running now “fleece10” will get 10% off of orders and there is free 2 day shipping.

I’m so happy you are enjoying them!

32 Kath December 16, 2010 at 7:58 pm

Awesome and awesome!!!

33 Melissa December 16, 2010 at 4:47 pm

Your photos are beautiful! Looks like a great spontaneous day.

34 kristine December 16, 2010 at 4:48 pm

looks like a ton of fun!

Cute toque!

35 Alex December 16, 2010 at 4:48 pm

Ah so jealous- The Lawn @UVA just looks the best in the snow. So beautiful!

36 Allie (Live Laugh Eat) December 16, 2010 at 4:54 pm

There’s not a single student in sight! It is snowing lots here too. Love your hat and that cornbread.

37 Laurel December 16, 2010 at 5:19 pm

That’s because tomorrow is the last day of finals! Except for the unlucky few who have a friday exam, everyone has peaced out! (I’m one of the unlucky few)

38 Erin (Travel Eat Repeat) December 16, 2010 at 4:55 pm

Mmm… gingerbread… mmm…! I left work early to beat the rush hour snowy traffic but it still took me two hours to get home, sadly. Now I’m warmly in my house and about to head out again for gym +food. So pretty in the snow!

39 Alice December 16, 2010 at 4:56 pm

The snow in our yard is already waist deep, so this is cracking me up! Enjoy the wintery weather (you can have some of ours).

40 Krissy @ Make It Naked December 16, 2010 at 4:57 pm

Perfect day for online shopping! Got my Garlic Gold on. Thanks for the deal! Happy snow day!

41 Cathy B. @ Bright Bakes December 16, 2010 at 4:57 pm

isn’t taking snow pictures just so much fun? :) And wow, does that veg plate look yummmmmy!
cathy b. @ brightbakes

42 Brittany (A Healthy Slice of Life) December 16, 2010 at 4:57 pm

That veggie plate looks delicious!! YUM. I need some veggies in my life.

Love all the snow!

43 Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg December 16, 2010 at 5:00 pm

Hey Kath– how do those boots handle in the ice?

Beautiful snow!!!

44 Kath December 16, 2010 at 5:01 pm

They handled them great – hope I didn’t ruin them though!

45 Amy December 16, 2010 at 5:02 pm

Ooh Eppie’s. I was going to get Eppie’s for lunch if I’d stayed at work. Instead I’ll get it tomorrow – that veggie plate is calling my name!

Glad you made it through the snow ok – I hate driving in it too :(

46 Kath December 16, 2010 at 5:05 pm

How have we not ran into each other yet!?

47 Joy December 16, 2010 at 5:02 pm

Looks great! We got snow up here in DC too. The funny thing is, today has felt like the warmest day from the past week; the wind from a few days ago was brutal!! Brrrr 😉 I think the clouds create like a thermal layer or something…I heard something like that one time so it must be true :)

48 L December 16, 2010 at 5:06 pm

I grew up in MN so ended up doing quite a of snow driving. Agree w/ the other comments that said to be cautious. Honestly, the main things are 1) Stopping sooner and more gradually. Same thing goes for accelerating. 2) Going into any curves at the speed you want to be going when you’re on the curve itself (i.e. off ramps). You shouldn’t brake when you are turning because that can cause you to slide.

I’ve had friends who carry a bag of sand in their trunk–it helps weigh down the wheels and you can use it to help you gain some traction if you get stuck in snow. Floor mats also work in a pinch :)

Not sure how much snow Charlottesville gets but this might be an option: when my friend’s mom moved from CA to MN, she went to an empty parking lot and practiced skidding (she wasn’t doing donuts, I promise :) to get used to getting herself out of a skid. If you’ll be driving in snow with any frequency, it might be worth an hour of your time to practice (and get more comfortable on the snow in general–not just when skidding). Some parts of snow driving are counter-intuitive (e.g. if you’re skidding you actually need to turn the wheel in the direction of the skid, not vice versa) and it’s easier to do the right thing if you’ve practiced.

Sorry…this ended up longer than I thought it would be. You’ll be great! :)

49 Kath December 16, 2010 at 5:07 pm

I definitely feel more primed for Montana after today

50 christina cadden December 16, 2010 at 5:10 pm

I wish it would snow here like it does there!

51 nicole December 16, 2010 at 5:19 pm

The snow looks so beautiful and fun, and all of you look great in your snow outfits! Looks like you should be having a white christmas while I enjoy the desert.

52 Jaclyn December 16, 2010 at 5:20 pm

Sounds like a fun day!

53 Errign December 16, 2010 at 5:26 pm

Driving in the snow gets easier! I’ve been doing it since day one of getting my license practically & now, I’m more scared of the other drivers on the road than my own abilities!

54 Stacy R. December 16, 2010 at 5:57 pm

Sometimes I wish I lived somewhere in CA that got snow, and then I remember things like having to shovel hour driveway in the morning to get to work and I’m thankful I don’t live in the snow :)

I LOVE that you and Matt will brave the elements to get some exercise and lunch! I really think since you’ve moved to CVille you have changed your way of thinking around biking/walking and maybe thats because in Charlotte you lived too far away from the downtown area, but none the less I’m sure you’re saving a lot on gas and the environment 😉

55 Canadian December 16, 2010 at 6:23 pm

Shoveling snow is a great workout!

56 Stacy R. December 16, 2010 at 7:36 pm

Haha very good point!

57 Kath December 16, 2010 at 7:59 pm

I think it IS a reflection of where we lived in Charlotte. Nice neighborhoods, but not much to do but walk in circles. I love that we can have destinations here. [Although I did always bike to the gym in CLT!]

58 Averie (LoveVeggiesandYoga) December 16, 2010 at 6:21 pm

You look so cute and cozy and adorable in all your winter gear!

I grew up in MN and then Chicago…and now live in San Diego (and for the last 10 yrs have lived in warm weather states, of which past 7 is So Cal) and i could never handle snow again :) But you make it look so fun!

59 stacey-healthylife December 16, 2010 at 6:24 pm

Looks like fun and a great way to enjoy the snow.

60 Lauren December 16, 2010 at 6:26 pm

It’s so funny seeing Southerners in snow…Vermont has snow & winter from Nov-April (sometimes earlier/later). Good thing I love the snow!

61 Kiran December 16, 2010 at 6:51 pm

I better get me some Ugg love :) Love snow, can’t wait to experience some on our road trip next week! Yippie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

62 Dee December 16, 2010 at 6:52 pm

Wow! That’s a lot of snow! And it’s not even winter yet! CRAZY!

I want those boots! They are too cute!

63 Jasmine @ Eat Move Write December 16, 2010 at 6:54 pm

I hate driving in snow. Bah.

Did that plate have two potatoes on it? Weird!

64 Laurie December 16, 2010 at 7:34 pm

Wow! You guys are so lucky! The snow looks beautiful! Your vegetarian lunch looks so good!

65 Hannah December 16, 2010 at 7:42 pm

You’re rocking that beanie!! Love and miss Eppie’s so much… particularly the goat cheese date salad :(

66 Namaste Gurl December 16, 2010 at 7:55 pm

Aw, you and Matt are too cute. Love your beanie and I am quite envious you have snow!

67 Simply Life December 16, 2010 at 8:11 pm

Looks fun! I can’t believe you’ve had more snow than Boston!

68 Lee December 16, 2010 at 8:43 pm

That first picture is a great picture of you.

We have a place here in Atlanta that sounds like Eppie’s called Eats. I love getting their vegetarian plate.

69 Jennie December 16, 2010 at 8:48 pm

You make me want to live where it snows! I live in AZ and it has been in the 70’s all week. I want winter!

70 BroccoliHut December 16, 2010 at 8:49 pm

Talk about a quintessential Southern veggie plate! I’m getting so hungry just looking at that sweet potato!

71 Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin December 16, 2010 at 9:52 pm

This sounds like such a perfect day in the snow! We spend so much time trying to avoid the snow and stay cozy indoors, but it’s nice to get out there and actually enjoy it too! :)

72 Mariana December 16, 2010 at 10:37 pm

I love your adorable pictures.

73 Alaina December 17, 2010 at 12:32 am

Send the snow up here, please! :-)

74 Jessie -- TheMessieKitchen.com December 17, 2010 at 7:33 am

I read this post on my phone last night and I must say, didn’t do beautiful Charlottesville on a snowy day any justice. Much better on my big screen computer at work — GOREGOUS!

75 Jen @ keepitsimplefoods.com December 17, 2010 at 9:35 am

What a fun snow day! We got a bit of snow here in DC yesterday, but not enough for a snow day.

76 Katie G. December 17, 2010 at 1:46 pm

You and Matt are so adorable in your snow clothes. I had to force the bf out of the house for a snow walk last year, but I think he enjoyed it once we got going!

Your town is so super cute! I only wish I could walk to lunch (or bike on warm days) where I live now!

77 Janna December 17, 2010 at 1:53 pm

The snow is a little heavier here…but I am glad to see you guys have good winter gear! You will need it in Montana! :)
Enjoy your snow days – wishing you a White Christmas!

78 J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) December 17, 2010 at 9:54 pm

Love the pictures! So, so, so pretty. :) Matt looks very sophisticated with a bit of beard. :)
