SNOWWWWWW DAAAY!

I drove in snow for the first time when I took Karen to the doctor this morning. It was SCARY and I was slipping around. Not fun! Luckily we arrived and departed safely and I was home by 11AM and ready to go for a massive snow walk.

Karen, however, got stuck on our street when she left. Matt was able to help her out, but she ended up getting stuck on another hill on the way to her house and had to call AAA. Sounds like a snow day to me.

IMG_4966Blog

After Karen left, Matt and I bundled up for our walk and decided to walk downtown for LUNCH!

IMG_4972Blog IMG_4978Blog

All bundled up we were pretty hot inside our ski pants and jackets. And I am in LOVE with my Ugg Brooms I got from Fleece Footwear for my birthday. They are SO warm and I’ve been wearing them nonstop since winter hit!

IMG_4975Blog

Shortly into our walk we ran into……FAITH + TATE! Who else!?!

IMG_5000Blog

They had just come from downtown, but thankfully they agreed to walk there with us – and join us for lunch!!

IMG_4983Blog

IMG_4980Blog

IMG_4982Blog

We walked straight to Eppie’s! I had a major craving for the vegetarian plate complete with cornbread!

IMG_4990Blog

Black beans, sweet potato, collards

IMG_4993Blog IMG_4997Blog IMG_4992Blog

And that slab of cake-like corny bread. A faaaaablous warm filling lunch!! [I fit most of it but gave Matt a potato and Faith some of my cornbread]

IMG_4994Blog

On the way home the snow lightened up a bit and we walked F+T back to their house and kept on going towards the UVA grounds

Back at home, we’re sipping tea. That was nearly a 3 hour walk! Hoping to build a fire tonight and cozy up with something comforting for dinner. [Given the car troubles, I postponed my haircut : ( ]

Driving in the snow isn’t too bad as long as you use caution. We just got 10 inches with drifts in Wisconsin, and thankfully we are all dug out!

Lol, we have atleast 3 feet of snow all winter here.. but I know it is hard for people who havn’t driven in it before, I just find it amusing how people who arn’t used to it react.

My hubby’s family is Texan and when I was down there last there was a few cm’s and everything shut down, people were driving into ditches.. I think they think more gas is good in the snow.. but it’s not!

I live in Wyoming and used to think like this too … I don’t know if it’s dry or generally more humid where you live, but it is very dry in Wyoming, but when places that are more humid get snow/cold temps, it immediately turns to ice. Realizing that kinda helped me understand the excitement/caution over what may only seem like a little snow to me! 🙂

I am a long-time reader, first-time commenter, but I decided you should know this information! I have washed my Uggs in the washing machine with a gentle detergent for delicates. Then air dry them (I put paper towels or washrags or something inside to keep their shape and absorb water). Then spray them with water-resistant spray. They always come out looking fresher and it gets rid of the water stains and salt stains.

I grew up in MN so ended up doing quite a of snow driving. Agree w/ the other comments that said to be cautious. Honestly, the main things are 1) Stopping sooner and more gradually. Same thing goes for accelerating. 2) Going into any curves at the speed you want to be going when you’re on the curve itself (i.e. off ramps). You shouldn’t brake when you are turning because that can cause you to slide.

I’ve had friends who carry a bag of sand in their trunk–it helps weigh down the wheels and you can use it to help you gain some traction if you get stuck in snow. Floor mats also work in a pinch 🙂

Not sure how much snow Charlottesville gets but this might be an option: when my friend’s mom moved from CA to MN, she went to an empty parking lot and practiced skidding (she wasn’t doing donuts, I promise 🙂 to get used to getting herself out of a skid. If you’ll be driving in snow with any frequency, it might be worth an hour of your time to practice (and get more comfortable on the snow in general–not just when skidding). Some parts of snow driving are counter-intuitive (e.g. if you’re skidding you actually need to turn the wheel in the direction of the skid, not vice versa) and it’s easier to do the right thing if you’ve practiced.

Sorry…this ended up longer than I thought it would be. You’ll be great! 🙂

I LOVE that you and Matt will brave the elements to get some exercise and lunch! I really think since you’ve moved to CVille you have changed your way of thinking around biking/walking and maybe thats because in Charlotte you lived too far away from the downtown area, but none the less I’m sure you’re saving a lot on gas and the environment 😉
