Beauty and Buttercream

May 4, 2009

Megan + Mihir’s wedding was one of the most gorgeous events I could even imagine!! It was held on a plantation right on the marsh downtown, and everything was absolutely stunning.

IMG_5571 (1024x768)

IMG_5587 (1024x768)

After breakfast Matt and I went on our biking adventure. We ended up doing about 15 miles all across Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s island.

IMG_5539 (1024x768)

Clif sent me one of their new sports drinks to try. I figured a 2 hour bike ride was an appropriate time to have one!

IMG_5533 (768x1024)

But honestly, it wasn’t very good. It was thick like sea water! I wonder if there was too much sodium? It tasted like a Starburst. The good part was that it was all natural though. Try one for yourself – you might like it.

IMG_5537 (768x1024) IMG_5534 (768x1024)

We saw lots of pretty sites – like this igloo!

IMG_5544 (1024x768)

And ocean views

IMG_5543 (1024x768)

We had planned to have lunch at Poe’s Tavern, but there were groceries at home and we wanted to get out to the beach, so we postponed it.

Once home, we classically attached some chips that were out

IMG_5545 (1024x768)

While we waited for quesadillas to cook! This was a whole wheat tortilla with about 2 tbsp of mashed black beans, a quarter cup of fiesta cheese and some of the peach salsa. I HATE salsa because of the onion taste, but I was very impressed by Newman’s Own – esp. this peach. Their onions are milder. I might have to try some more variations.

IMG_5547 (1024x768)

With some fresh fruit

IMG_5548 (1024x768)

IMG_5546 (1024x768)

Then we went out to the beach for while.

IMG_5565 (1024x768)IMG_5551 (1024x768)

Matt and I went on a 30 minute beach walk and then I laid and looked at this

IMG_5556 (1024x768)

After lots of text messages and phone calls, I got to meet Erica!! She lives here in Charleston and I hope next time we’re here we can a longer visit with lunch :)

IMG_5566 (1024x768)

Then we frantically showered and went to the trolley stop and arrived at the wedding location.

IMG_5573 (1024x768)

The setting was gorgeous; the weather perfect

IMG_5570 (1024x768)

IMG_5579 (1024x768)

IMG_5577 (1024x768) IMG_5576 (1024x768)

I sipped on lemonade

IMG_5578 (1024x768)

My groom!

IMG_5575 (1024x768)

Whizzle the bridesmaid!

IMG_5583 (1024x768)

Megan’s big moment

IMG_5585 (1024x768)

IMG_5588 (1024x768) IMG_5589 (1024x768)

IMG_5591 (1024x768)  IMG_5593 (1024x768)

They had a choir singing as they exited to “Your love is lifting me higher”

IMG_5594 (1024x768)

Annndd it was right at this point that my camera battery gave me the “you have 5 minutes” warning. Noooooooooooooooo!!! Matt had forgotten his camera, so I knew I didn’t have much to get me through the night. Wish I could have taken more photos! But I made it through the cake :) If my photos are a little blurry, it’s because I was rushing to take them and get the camera back off!

The reception was in a tent just next to the plantation- complete with couches for lounging!

IMG_5596 (1024x768)

We were greeted with mojitos. Matt and I shared one

IMG_5597 (1024x768)

And some passed hors d’oeuvres

IMG_5600 (1024x768) IMG_5604 (1024x768)

He found the local beers -

IMG_5607 (1024x768)

And I found a gorgeous cheese display near the bathrooms!!!! I had a few samples, but kept myself under control ;)

IMG_5609 (1024x768)

I sipped on this Cosmo on the rocks later – heavy on soda (which I added) and light on vodka. (Sorry for the blur!)

IMG_5610 (1024x768)

They had four stations for dinner -

IMG_5602 (1024x768) IMG_5603 (1024x768) IMG_5605 (1024x768) IMG_5606 (1024x768)

Matt and I shared a little of everything pretty much half and half -

IMG_5613 (1024x768)

It was DELISH!!

IMG_5614 (1024x768)

IMG_5615 (1024x768)

IMG_5616 (1024x768)

A little while later, Matt surprised me with a Manhattan, which I sipped slowly for about an hour.

IMG_5617 (1024x768)

Hanging out with Busty and Matty!

IMG_5618 (1024x768)

Another hour later, we found some little dessert bites near the cheese!! Matt and I split them again, but this time I had 1 bite of each- ‘twas all.

IMG_5619 (1024x768)

CAKE TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You guys know I LIVE for wedding cake (and so does my mom!!) This one was amazing!!

IMG_5595 (1024x768)

Matt and I shared a piece because I knew there were other flavors and I might need to try them too…I ended up eating 2/3 and him 1/3. It was hazelnutty with praline pieces!? Loved it!!

IMG_5620 (1024x768)

Matt only wanted 1/3 because he found cheeseburgers and fries!! I didn’t care for any with the cake in my lap :)

IMG_5623 (1024x768)

They also had milkshakes going around! I had a sip of this shot glass portion -

IMG_5624 (1024x768)

And we were right!! Soon enough the other two cakes were cut to unveil raspberry and chocolate!!! How can you resist this!?!

IMG_5627 (1024x768)

I was full and so were my friends, so we shared a piece of each to try and all had a few bites of each -

IMG_5625 (1024x768)

The raspberry filling was SUPERB!!

IMG_5626 (1024x768)

It was a perfect wedding. I felt really good about the night eating-wise. I enjoyed a taste of everything and didn’t over-do it. We only go to a couple weddings every year, so you gotta live it up while you can!

IMG_5628 (1024x768)

Best wishes to Megan + Mihir!

Hi Kath -

I just had a quick question about weight maintenence. I’ve reached my goal weight and am not really sure HOW to maintain it now that I’m there. Do you have any suggestions about adding more calories or cutting back on exercise, or any other tips that might be helpful? Thanks!

38 Hallie May 4, 2009 at 11:33 am

My bad! What I meant to say is:

PB & J: I would, for the most part, keep doing what you’re doing. Especially if you enjoy your workouts, I wouldn’t dial those back. Working out is such a great mental and physical break from the rest of your day. And it’s hard without knowing your eating habits what you should change there, but I’d say maybe just allow yourself a little more slack in your diet…say, have that glass of wine OR slice of bread with dinner where you didn’t before. Maybe add in an extra healthy snack if you’re hungry.

You’ll have to play with it to find out what is best for you. I was maintaining my weight loss (~35 lbs) for about 6 years and now I’ve gained a little so I’m trying to dial it back and lose some more. It’s HARD when you’re in maintence for so long!

Good luck!

P.S. Holy moly that looks like a LOVELY wedding. Congrats to the newlyweds and congrats to you Kath for making good choices and feeling good about it! Now I want to make friends in the south so I can go to weddings on plantations…

Hi, wow, what a beautiful wedding and looks like unbelievable food too! You looked stunning in green!

I know you mentioned that you didn’t like salsa due to onion flavor, have you tried Trader Joe’s Peach Salsa, it’s got a great flavor and smoky chipolte taste?. Also, wanted to mention that I actually found a Great Harvest bakery near me and picked up some Dakota buns and bread the other day…now I know why you guys love that stuff…so fresh and healthy and filling! Now if I can just find someplace that sells that Spring Blend coffee, I’ll be in good shape! Really enjoy your blog and have gotten so many great ideas. Recently made some cilantro pesto and then just made some arugula pesto too, unbelievable!

Re. Green Dress,
Target – $40 I think!? That dress would have been $200 at a boutique!

rainee ,
I got my bike off of Craig’s list for $20. I don’t even know what kind it is, but it’s a women’s hybrid.

Lydia,
Thank you. I think they are genetically toned – both of my parents have nice calves :) But I started running when I was in middle school and danced and played soccer, all “calf friendly” activities, from an early age.

(Let me know if I missed your question – the Blackberry removed my stars by accident!)
