Yoga + Yogurt

When considering my workouts everyday I take two major things into consideration:

1) How do I feel (physically, mentally)?

2) What’s tomorrow going to be like?

Since I ran yesterday, I decided I should rest from runs today, and I felt pretty stiff in the legs when I got out of bed. I also noted that I need to work at the bakery through mid-morning on Saturday, so that’s a good day to run in the morning. I had planned on going to Body Pump at noon today, but since Saturday is a run day, I didn’t want to run tomorrow, so I’ll BP tomorrow. Follow me!? So I ended up deciding on this:

Today: Rest/stretch

Tomorrow: Body Pump

Saturday: Run

And then I rolled out of bed and onto my yoga mat! I haven’t done yoga in AGES!!!

IMG_1347Blog

And boy could I tell. I was SO stiff! I could barely do downdog when I first started! I tuned in to a Dave Farmar podcast and did the first 30 minutes then turned it off for some stretching and savasana at the end. Dave’s podcasts always make me sweat at least one drip!

IMG_1349Blog

After yoga + a shower, yogurt! Although you probably can’t see any proof there was yogurt in that bowl ; )

IMG_1365Blog-2

It was there – under gobloads of FRUIT!!

IMG_1360Blog

The Mix

  • 1 cup Whole Foods organic low-fat plain yogurt
  • 1 nectarine
  • Rasp + blue
  • Groovy Granola (Great Harvest made!)
  • Whole flax (I love their texture)
  • Ground flax (for the nutrients)
  • Sunflower butter (for the amazing taste + texture!)

I’m glad I’m not the only one who plans my workouts like that. If tomorrow is going to be a long run day, then I try to go easy on my legs the day before. If I know I want to get a series weights session in today, I’ll go easy on my muscles tomorrow. It’s all about the give and take, right??

This post made me smile- I now feel normal about putting so much thought into each workout! Also have you tried making oatmeal as normal the night before and then eating it after refrigerating overnight? I have been loving it lately, especially as it’s too hot for normal oatmeal!

Oh its fantastic, the oats gel up a lot so you get A LOT of volume! The night before, I make oats with 1/3 cup oatmeal, 1 cup water, 200ml soya milk, salt chias+banana. When its mid way through cooking (ie there’s still a bit of liquid remaining), I take it off the stove and refridgerate! The next mornings, the oats have swelled up A LOT and have a wonderful thick and creamy consistency!

PS- Mine never seems to gel-like…but the yogurt addition could be the reason why… not sure :/

Gobloads of fruit is exactly what I had this morning! Your bowl looks delicous. Looks like a great workout plan. I really need to get into yoga. I actually want to start doing some moves with my children this summer. Hope your bike ride was a good one and have a wonderful Great Harvest day .

BTW I was reading your post about last nights dinner and I was thinking about how to a lot of people putting together a meal like that would be too much work. Quick meals for them would be something out of a box or the freezer or takeout. My husband is gone fishing and last night the kids and I had coconut shrimp with fruit salsa, baked sweet potatoes/fries, roasted broccoli, asparagus, sweet corn and we had banana/fruit soft serve for dessert after the park. As we were enjoying our wonderful summertime meal outside and the kids were happily chowing down and thanking me for making what I did, I realized I could have fed them something much “quicker and easier”, but in reality it didn’t take me much time and effort to make the meal I made. Whew… sorry about the rambling. I just love seeing that even after a long hard day you are still able to put together a nutritious and delicious meal full of fresh foods.

My sweet children thank me everyday for the food I make, the places we go, the activities we do, the books we read. It does inspire me to do the things I do on a daily basis because I know how much they appreciate them. My son is 4 and my daughter is 5 so they are very honest and sincere with what they say, both good and bad LOL. Right now my son just woke up and gave me a big hug so I better go cuddle on the couch with him and read a book.

I think quick meals are all about the ingredients! If you don’t have good stuff on hand to morph, you’ll just stare at the fridge and pull out a frozen dinner. If you have done a little preparation and have stuff to throw together, insta dinner!

My daughter actually does a really good job helping me shop for clothes and picking clothes for herself. Hopefully this continues through the preteen and teen years. I agree that appreciation and gratitude are so important for children to learn and adults need to demonstrate those values on a daily basis.

Kath, I totally agree on “insta-meals” being all about planning and having a well stocked pantry, fridge, and freezer. I love being able to use leftovers and whatever I have on hand to put together an delicious and healthy “insta-meal”. I plan on doing that in just a little while for lunch.

I’m with you on the scheduling/varying your workouts. Great thoughts.
For instance, tomorrow I will be traveling (and running through the Atlanta airport, I’m certain – can’t seem to avoid it!), after working a half-day. So rest/stretch today – then whatever exercise I get while traveling (and working) tomorrow, and then a big walk on Saturday morning at my destination. (Where it will hopefully be COOLER!)

I agree with what Katie said above, love your flexibility with your workouts. I have to ask myself those two questions too. I think a lot of times, people think they should be hardcore with exercise, like run every day or do the same exercise class every day, but from what I’ve learned, it’s good to switch things up and take rest days. I did a tempo run last night and plan on just lifting weights at home after work today. I know on Friday I’m going to have a long day so I’m debating whether to get up and run early (which will make me sleepy later on) or if I should just give myself some “grace” 🙂 and not run at all.

Kath, have you seen Heidi Swanson’s recipe for baked oatmeal floating around the internet? It’s one of the ones she released prior to her new book coming out (which should be this week, I think). I made it this morning, and it’s seriously fantastic: http://www.lottieanddoof.com/2011/04/baked-oatmeal/

I reduced the sugar to 1/4 cup total (half brown sugar, half maple syrup), and it was still great. I used sliced almonds, strawberries, blackberries, and blueberries. Alongside a scoop of plain greek yogurt, this was the best breakfast we’ve had in a while.

…but yours looks seriously awesome, might have to copy 😉

Beautiful yogurt bowl! Lately, my exercise schedule is definitely planned around the weather. The rain has been so random and sporadic, so it’s perfect for doing yoga/strength during those gross days.

It’s amazing how, even after a couple days of skipping Yoga practices, my body can really tell a difference! But oh, then, it is reminded how WONDERFUL those asanas feel!
Your breakfasts are always so beautiful, too. <3

I like that you plan your workouts like that. It’s always good to give your body rest days when you need them. Saturday’s run will feel so great I bet.

I love your workout rationale! I’m a studio junkie, but every now and then I love a home practice. A few times I’ve just went with a flow on my own and it was so much fun! I have a yoga playlist of fast and slow songs that I put on shuffle and I flow to which ever song comes up!

Interesting workout views, listening to your body and resting when needed. That’s something I tend to ignore which can lead to me being over-tired by the end of the week.

    Beautiful breakfast pics.

I wish I was disciplined enough to do yoga by myself! I go to a yoga class at my gym (the instructor is AWESOME), but when I don’t have time to make it to the gym, I wish I could just do a short yoga session at home but I usually get bored or distracted 🙂 haha maybe I just need more practice!

I plan ahead with workouts too the only exception would be yoga. Since you can modify your practice for whatever you need – a strong, sweat dripping workout or a peaceful, restoring workout – I don’t consider it the same as running or weights.

It’s amazing how much better I always feel after yoga! Even if it’s just a quick session. A few days not stretching seriously leave me sooo stiff.

Great job on doing yoga at home, Kath. I just went to a vinyasa class last night for the same reason — too much running lately, not enough stretching! I work and have 3 kids and when it stays light late (like June and July), I can run outside after my hubby gets home. So that is what I’ve been doing.

I digress — I was SO stiff after not doing it for a month. It was awesome. I wish I could focus to do at home sessions, but with 3 kids there is no zen at home for yoga whatsoever! In any case, doesn’t it make you feel great to do it?!!

And I am going to a Dave Farmar weekend workshop in Rhode Island this summer!! (I live in a boston suburb). I love his style b/c I love doing yoga but I am not into super seriousness during the practice, if that makes sense…

I go through the exact same thought process when I plan my workouts. I used to be so sore after Body Pump that I’d always make the next day a rest day but over the past couple of months it hasn’t been as much of a problem.
