What To Expect [On A Friday Night]

IMG_0820

Top of the morning to you! It’s not a typical Friday around here. There will be no Fridays After Five this evening (sadness).

Because we’ll be spending our Friday at the hospital! For two days of childbirth classes! I have no idea what to expect, but I’m looking forward to learning more. I have only heard good things about our hospital (which is only 6 months old) and I have yet to see the inside. It’s so strange to think that pregnancy is one of the few times you KNOW you’re going to be a patient in a hospital.

IMG_0814

Strawberry-Cottage Cheese Whipped Banana Oatmeal this morning. Topped with strawberry-lavender jam (I’m almost out already!), Reginald’s Cashew Nilla butter and granola.

IMG_0812

Served with a cup of caramel tea (by Adagio) and a dash of sunshine.

So you actually will stay overnight at the hospital for the classes? Good luck!!

How are you liking Reginald’s nut butters? I bought the original crunchy PB…it’s pretty good, but I like the Peanut Shop (http://www.thepeanutshop.com/product/232/peanut-butter-items) better, I think… I’m curious about the more unique Reginald’s flavors, though!

Have fun at the classes Kath! It’s so true what you said about knowing you’ll be a patient in a hospital. Lucky for me, I haven’t had any serious injuries or reasons to be a patient (knock on wood) for a very long time, and hopefully it stays that way because I don’t particularly like hospitals. I hope you guys learn lots! 🙂

My sister is almost 3 months (yay!) along and is currently debating hospital vs. birthing center. This may be too personal to ask, so feel free to ignore me, but did y’all consider other options? If so, find any good resources to help you decide? She is the first of our friends/family to be a mom, and there is soooo much out there it’s overwhelming. Hoping you and your mom’s group may have some better info.

        Thanks!

I felt very strongly that we were attached to a hospital. If there had been a birthing center in the same block as the hospital, I bet I would have chosen that. Our hospital is pretty small and from what I’ve heard, the OB unit is more like a birthing center than a big city hospital, so I was comfortable with this decision

Our class is tomorrow…ALL DAY. 🙁 Kind of a bummer since I miss the farmers market and my parents offered to take us to IKEA since it’s supposed to be nice, but it was too late to cancel/reschedule the class when she called.

I’m interested to see how the class is and what I can learn because the whole labor/delivery process is what freaks me out! My husband was initially okay with the class when I signed up, but now he questions why we need classes! Um, because we only have a vague idea of what happens! Plus we’ll get a tour of the maternity area. I think he’s going to learn a lot- kinda like our trip to Babies R Us when he realized we needed a lot more than he thought- and that’s just us trying to get the basic items!

I cringe at the whole “sick model” of pregnancy and childbirth. Sometimes the way we think about things and the words we use can really affect how we approach something and how we act in different settings.

Perhaps instead of seeing yourself as a “patient” in the hospital, you should view yourself as a client or customer. The staff are there to assist you and help you have the experience you want in a normal, natural, healthy process 🙂

It’s true – UVA Hospital (which is where I’m assuming you’re going) has a terrific birthing unit! I work in early intervention nearby, and we have a LOT of kids who have come through the hospital and parents only have terrific things to say about it. Also, even though I know we’re all hoping you wont need it, but their NICU is one of the best out there. So if anything bad DOES happen (crossing all my fingers and toes that it doesnt), at least you can rest assured that you and the little one are in the best possible care. Anyway, just some thoughts from someone who has seen lots of kiddos come through there!

Gotcha. Well I have had some kiddos come out of there too (all with good things to say), just not as many since it’s so new and much smaller! But really, all the hospitals around Charlottesville are actually extremely good, so that is always reassuring!
