What Time Is It???

I caught up on sleep last night – almost 12 hours – which brought me to a 9:00 awakening. But I woke up with a horrible sore throat!! I sure hope I’m not getting sick.

After hydrating and checking emails, I went on a 5+ mile run. Wow, the Carolina Heat welcomed me back strong! It was a good run, but I was slower from the heat (and missing my chilly Golden Gate run with BethT!)

So once I was home showered, stretched, and watered, it was time for breakfast at 11:30!! I debated eating lightly and having lunch on time, but I decided to just have breakfast and then eat lunch when I get hungry again.

So I made a fabulous bowl of oats!

Coconut Pomegranate Granola Plank Oats

DSC01858

  • 1/3 cup oats
  • 1/3 cup hemp milk
  • 1/3 cup water
  • Pinch salt
  • 1 medium banana
  • 2 tbsp crumbled granola plank
  • 1 tbsp unsweetened coconut
  • Spoonful PB

DSC01859

Sorry for my posting time inconsistency but I can’t wait to get back to a normal schedule!

Hey Everyone! I had a couple questions I hoped you all could help me out with. What brand of almond butter does everyone buy? I keep thinking about trying it out, but I want to make sure I get a good one, do you all really think it’s work the 6-10 dollars?

Also, anyone have any tips for bloating and water weight during “that week”?

angelcubbie, the best almond butter (by far) I’ve found is Kettle Falls.
For bloating and water weight…drink lot of water (sounds counterintuitive, but it works) and I usually end up taking Midol as well.

Kath, I loved seeing your posts from your trip. Your food always looks so good. I’m thinking of starting a blog as well. I’m guessing that it keeps you from get into a food rut too, because it wouldn’t be very interesting if you were eating the same things everyday. I love talking about food all of the time anyways, so it wouldn’t be a stretch for me to do the same online. Any tips or sites that I should visit?

I tried the hemp milk again today and I have to say that I like my whole milk/maple syrup concoction better. I think if I used skim, or 1 or 2 % milk that I would like the hemp concoction better but because I’ve made the decision to go with the unprocessed (but pasteurized!) whole milk (I make that sound like a chore-it’s delicious!) it makes a much creamier oatmeal. I like the taste of the hemp milk though and will be bringing it to work to eat with cereal/granola or peanut butter sandwiches-YUM!

Kath, I can’t believe you didn’t eat until 11:30! Weren’t you starving? I always end up eating right after I work out, and then I get lazy and take a shower later. Maybe food will motivate me to get ready faster if I eat after? I may try that!

Also, has anyone heard of the Body Bugg? Tons of people have them at my gym, and when I went to the doctor recently, she had one on too! Is this a new trend?

On almond butter.. definitely my favorite nut butter. I love the Maranatha brand as well, but am a little too cheap to buy it – I stick with the Trader Joe’s Raw Almond Butter. It goes for $4.99 out in CA, which I think is a pretty good deal.

Yum, now that I think about it, I need to go buy a jar.

angelcubbie – I would actually advise against drinking too much water. Stay hydrated, definitely, but if you drink too much I find that “that week” ends up lasting a bit longer! I don’t know if that’s just me though.

I second the TJ’s almond butter. Or if you can find a health food store that makes it fresh, that’s the best 🙂 Same goes for PB.

Kath, I’m glad you caught up on sleep. The same thing happens to me when I sleep in…I get up, run, and by the time I’m ready for breakfast, it’s time for lunch! I think it’s because I very rarely sleep later than 8:00am so my body doesn’t know what’s going on.

I LOVE knowing what other people have for lunch! I had two slices of Whole Foods whole wheat with two slices of turkey, romaine, asparagus, a sprinkle of blue cheese, Dijon mustard, and a couple of dried cherries, with a peach on the side.

angel cubbie: TJ has good almond butter…I recommend it. I developed an almond allergy after eating a ton of them, so no more for me. 🙁 Even before my allergy, I personally never found the nut butters to be worth the extra money. While the taste of almond butter is undisputably delicious, peanut butter is easier to get fresh, higher in protein and, IMO, more filling. I only ate almond and other such butters because I grew up with people who were terribly, terribly allergic to peanuts and would get allergic reactions just from smelling peanuts on my breath. I guess we know where my allergy genes came from. 🙂

Daisy May: I usually only eat out once/week and cook all my other meals. I do it mostly for budget reasons but also because I enjoy making food for myself (and boyfriend) and knowing that it’s more nutritious than what I’d get out probably. It makes that one time per week more enjoyable/special as well! However, when mom’s in town (like now) I eat out more, but that doesn’t happen very often!

I made a very strange dinner last night and just reheated for lunch today. I got a bag of frozen mixed veggies (corn, green beans, peas, carrots) and heated up with 1/2 a can of great northern beans. Then I mixed in some siracha sauce, plain yogurt and some seasonings. Somehow, it turned out to be pretty tasty. Add a small wheat dinner roll and you’re set!

I’m reading this and having a late lunch, so I’ll chime in:

I’m having a HUGE salad (got carried away chopping up the veggies) that has a head of romaine lettuce, a whole carrot, half a cucumber, large handful of sunflower sprouts (yummy!!), three small tomatoes chopped up, a sprinkling of shredded sharp cheddar, a few sunflower seeds and a drizzle of raspberry vinaigrette dressing. It was so big I had to put it in a serving bowl. I also made a frozen Amy’s Organics Spinach and Feta Pocket. My BF just came home, took one look at my enormous lunch and said I probably won’t want dinner until 8:00 p.m. Ha, ha – silly man 😉

Tracy- My mom and her good friend used to wear the body bug. For those that don’t know it is an electronic device you wear on your arm that tracks how many calories you burn. You go home and put what you eat into the computer and it tells you your deficit and such for the day.

I think the concept is good for those who aren’t aware of what they are eating but I think it can get too obssessive. In my opinion healthy lifestyle changes, education on proper eating, and excerise works much better than number crunching.

Plus my first ever job was at DQ so I enjoyed quite a few of their tasty treats while I was employed (thank goodness it was when I was 14 otherwise I think I would’ve ballonned out!)

And now I’m watching the clock for it to be 2:30 so I can enjoy the cake….50 more minutes

No way! My first job was at a Dairy Queen too! Sadly, it was a smaller walk-up kind and we didn’t make those cakes. We had to go to a bigger town to get the one I had for my birthday. I’ve actually had it more than once – that’s how I knew I wanted one for my birthday. I’ve only had one for my birthday, though. ;-(

Hehe – I know what you mean about eating at the DQ. The guy that owned our franchise let us eat all we wanted. He was really smart. That would last about a week until you got so sick of DQ food, you could barf. It didn’t stop me a whole lot but I did tone-it down after a while. Man, I still love their hot fudge sundaes. Oh, and the Peanut Buster Parfait. And the chocolate milk shakes. I could go on…

Sounds like a good sleep, glad you were able to rest up. I’m not in love with the taste of coconut (weird, I know!) But I love the chewy, stringy (ew sounding) texture that it adds. I’ve recently gotten really into adding wheat bran to my oats as well as a crumbled up fiber cracker. It’s sort of like a “RYE CRISP” cracker, but no rye- just bran. Adds lovely chew and *grittiness* (this also sounds horrible- bad adjectives?) But I’m all about texture!

That way you could try just a little bit to see if you like it enough to buy a jar. I think it’s worth the price, but I enjoy it a lot more than peanut butter. It makes an awesome “PB&J.”

PS. Why is it that a tablespoon of coconut or 2 T of granola planks in my bowl NEVER looks as big and voluminous and filling and fab as they do in Kath’s magic bowls!!!!!??? I wish I knew the secret!!

    Julieh ,
Give blogging a try! I recommend WordPress over all the other types. Problogger.com is also a great site for info.

    Chelsea ,
Whole milk oatmeal. I bet that IS amazing. I think the pro of the hemp milk is flavor, not really creaminess though. Maybe I should try making oats with 2%? I don’t eat much saturated fat, so it’s not a huge deal to have some in milk. I think 2% would be good for me though as whole is a little heavy.

    caitlibo ,
Sounds like a great packed lunch!!

    DaisyMay ,
Normally we don’t eat out very much. We’ve been traveling a lot though so we’ve been eating out more. We both pack lunches at least 4 days a week during a work week and we don’t go out much just the 2 of us but save dinners out for occasions with friends and family.

    Foodie,
I’m not really sure. My guess before was 500-1,000 but I just got Google Analytics and that says closer to 3,000!! I’m really not sure though. Probably somewhere in the middle.

Haha – you are correct that I hate sleep! But I am very sleep dependent (meaning I’m a wreck if I don’t get 7.5-8 hours).

    Nikki ,
    Found the coconut at Earthfare.

    Jill – GlossyVeneer,
You should have gone at 6am on a Saturday like we did – there wasn’t a person or car in sight!

    Deb ,
That bowl is a small bowl – probably only holds 1.5 cups? So it looks bigger. I rarely eat oats in our big Pottery Barn regular bowls because they make food look so small!

Nikki-I got my unsweetened coconut in the baking aisle. I think I got it from Kroger? My guess is that just about any grocery store will have it…just look in the baking aisle where the nuts, chocolate chips, etc. are.

Thanks Kath for the info re. the bowl- I always have meal envy when I read your blog!! 😀

Oh and I wanted to let you know that since I’ve been reading your blog, I’ve gone out and replaced all my dull bowls and plates with really cute and interesting ones- different colors, shapes and sizes (some I got in Chinatown, rice bowls and sushi-type appetizer plates) ….I even snagged those adorable placemats from Crate N Barrel (yours are orange, mine are brown- very-Austin-powers- groovy-baby-looking). I’m even serving the hubby’s usual boring strawberries, bananas and yogurt on them and he loves it and swears they taste better 😀 It really makes a huge difference for both of us and I want to thank you for that. I actually eat more balanced in general since reading your blog and wanted you to know that as well 🙂
