#weekend

After a long week of wedding festivities, we were happy to be home again and back to normal life.

Foodblog-6869

Friday night was low key and indoors due to bad weather. Matt and I were glad to resume our Mad Men watching! We’re now on Season 4 and loving it.

Saturday morning we risked getting wet with a run + walk to the market. I try to run a mile or so the long way to the market to break at sweat before the rest of my workout is in the form of walking.

Foodblog-083458

First stop is always to say hi to dada!

Foodblog-083453

Second stop is to Shenandoah Joe’s for coffee. This week I got ICED!

Foodblog-081942

Speaking of ice, check out the latest from Nugget’s Raw Kombucha! It was soooo fresh. Can’t wait to try more flavors and get a kombucha float sometime soon.

Foodblog-083202

For breakfast I had fresh berries

Foodblog-082752

And a local egg fried up by Babes In The Wood served on some Great Harvest bread.

Foodblog-081938

Back home we baby proofed the house a bit for Mr. Crawl (love/hating on the new gate at the top of the stairs)

Foodblog-114508

And to keep some fun in the weekend, we strolled downtown for cocktails

Foodblog-6873 Foodblog-6871

Glass Haus Kitchen has some AMAZING hand-crafted options. I asked the bartender to surprise me with something based on bourbon and this was muddled strawberries, Art of the Age Rhuby (rhubarb, cardamom, vanilla and coriander), Verjus blanc and bourbon.

Foodblog-6876

Foodblog-

We came home for dinner (that’s life with a baby) and had an awesome local trout I bought at the market pan-seared with some garlic scape and butter.

Served with kale salad from our garden and corn on the cob

Sunday morning breakfast!! Eggs, fruit extravaganza, toast with Wild Friends PB

Foodblog-6890

Sunday I went to the gym, did lots of laundry, and went to see The Great Gatsby with Karen! Loved it like I loved Moulin Rouge.

Foodblog-6920

Sunday night Shanna and Mike invited us to our house for a BBQ! Man I miss that porch.

Foodblog-6909Foodblog-6916Foodblog-6915

We had turkey burgers, kale salad, pasta salad and lots of fruit.

Happy Weekend!

I need to find a farmers market to go to, that looks like such an enjoyable way to spend a morning. Also, I’m digging your use of vine on here! I didn’t know you could upload them to blogs and it adds a nice element.

Ha – babies crawling around are so adorable. He’s at a great stage now too. 🙂 I haven’t seen Great Gatsby yet but I loved Moulin Rouge so I need to add it to my list of summer movies to watch. By the way, I can smell those raspberries through my computer screen. They look wonderful!

Those vine videos of Mazen are so funny…loved seeing the little guy in motion! My fav. was broccoli boy – hysterical, esp. entrancing b/c the continuous looping aspect of the videos!

Great progress on the Mad Men viewing! 🙂

Such a lovely, relaxing weekend! I tried some of my dad’s baked trout the other day, could not get myself to like the flavor… Maybe pan-searing it will make it taste better? Or maybe it’s just the fish in itself 😉

I notice that you’ve been doing a lot of kale salads lately, and I’m wondering how you make them. Whenever I try to make them, they are just too bitter. Do you have any suggestions for kale salads? Or any trick you use to cut down on the bitter taste?

      June 11, 2013 at 2:17 pm

We do them massaged-style. Starting with clean, chopped kale, we massage in a mix of lime juice, olive oil and salt often with a touch of balsamic. Sometimes I just use the Garlic Gold Lemon Vinaigrette. Just keep massaging until it’s “cooked.” Letting it sit longer will help too. I honestly don’t find kale to be that bitter compared to other greens, but I do think the dressing helps a lot.

    Hi Kath
First of all, Mazen is the cutest baby around!
Second, I am looking for a recipe that I made from your blog for a cold Asian/Peanut Noodle Salad. It was a recipe one of your friends made for you and the recipe was posted on the comments. I made it at our house a couple times and today my son asked me to make again, but I cannot find that post… do you know where it is?
(I tried looking on your recipage but did not find the recipe there).
    Thanks!

Thanks! I have no idea where they are from actually. They are my junk pair that live in my stroller! 🙂

Cool story: the most expensive sunglasses I ever bought were about $50. I wore them in a lake and of course they sank to the bottom when I got splashed swimming off of a boat. I bought a new pair on eBay and when I messaged the seller after paying for them she told me that they had been found on the bottom of a river – she is a diver who picks up brand-name things from bodies of water! Sadly I lost those too sometime later so I only buy cheap sunglasses now. Although my friends Seamane and Rob are always getting on me to get some better pairs : )

HAHA! Oh my gosh that really is too funny! I wish that would happen with mine! I couldn’t believe how quickly they sunk to the bottom. I literally grabbed for them as soon as I heard them hit the water and they had already gone down!

Thank you for the brand suggestions I will definitely check them out…though I’m thinking your route of only buying the cheap ones might be the way I go too! 🙂

And I totally get the going home for dinner. . . it’s just easier with a baby. And when we do go out to dinner, we go at like 5pm. So wild and crazy, right?

I’ve got some curly kale going NUTS in the garden and I’ve been trying to think of what beyond juicing and kale chips to do with it. I think I’ll have to make a fresh salad with some of the harvest!
