Wee Willie Winky

Remember that poem?

image

My mom used to say it to us when we were little. I can’t remember if we loved it or hated it, but I’m leaning towards hating it!

The connection to breakfast? I slept too late! I haven’t been setting my alarm in response to all the “sleep now because you’ll never sleep again” advice I’ve gotten. And because I never know when I’ll sleep well and when I won’t. Most days I’m up by 7, but sometimes I wake up at 8/8:30 shocked at how late it is! I was a bit restless from 3-4am last night, so that’s probably why I slept late today.

I needed a quick breakfast to get going or I will be late!

When I put butters in cereal, I let it drip off the spoon and into the milk, serving as a surprise for later.

But then the first bite always has the most!

Tea on the side!

Have a great day – hopefully a cool one!

Aw! How could you not like Wee Willie? I don’t remember it. Must not have been my mother’s favorite either. 🙂
Another delicious breakfast. It looks so fresh.

In the Ramona books, Ramona is terrified that Wee Willie WInkie is going to come into her room and find her awake. Anyone know which Ramona book that’s in?

My neighbor used to recite it when we were kids but um, changed the words. That’s about as much as I’ll say about that. 🙂

    Enjoy your day!

I never liked the poem either! My mom (thankfully) was more into singing. She used to put me to bed singing “Moon RIver.”

That story seems a little pervy to me… 🙂
RE: nut butter in cereal: that’s why I keep the jar right by my side while I eat my cereal–it makes for the perfect butter/cereal ratio for every bite. (Although that means that we have to have a jar of PB that’s just for me, and one that we can serve to guests and everyone else!)

Ha! I DO remember that poem but the one we heard had a different ending. It was like “rapping at the windows, crying through the lock, are the children in their bed for it’s past 8 o’clock!” I don’t remember if I loved or hated it either but I definitely remember it!

That’s the way I remember it! “Rapping at the windows, crying through the lot, are the children in their beds for now it’s 8 o’clock!” I loved nursery rhymes. Probably because I just love the written word period. 🙂

Oh and I say this one to my son when he wakes up with only one sock on:

      Diddle diddle dumpling
      my son john
went to bed with his trousers on
      one shoe off
      one shoe on
      diddle diddle dumpling
      my son john

      LOL so stupid 🙂

I was literally just about to ask how you put nut butters in cold milk before I moved on to the next picture! I’ve never tried it because I usually eat hot cereal, but it’s an option to remember! And yes, sure do remember that poem. Or at least the name “Wee Willie Winkie.” I can’t wait to have kids so I can make them read all of the stories I loved when I was little 🙂

My mom always said this Little Bunny Foo Foo poem to me. I loved it when I was a little kid. However, she’s been singing it like crazy again ever since my niece was born. Now it’s ALWAYS stuck in my head. I’m pretty sure I look like a crazy person every time I’m mumbling/singing it while shopping at the grocery store. It’s slowly turning to me hating it.

Hey Kath! I just started reading KERF a week ago or so, and I’ve been hooked! I’ve had some of your oatmeal recipes for breakfast since and I am wondering if I’m missing something, but it just doesn’t taste right to me! This morning I had your basic overnight oats and added ripe blackberries and sunflower butter to it…and it just tasted bland/not sweet enough! Is it just an acquired taste or should I add something else to it?

I don’t like sweet things, so it’s probably an acquired taste 🙂 Maybe add mashed banana to sweeten it naturally?

I found the oats very bland when I tried them a couple weeks ago too, do you really not add sugar. You eat quite a bit of sweet treats though?

I love putting nut butter in cereal now! I find that I always pile it up on a tower of cereal to one side of the bowl (I use less milk too) so that I can have easy access to get a little nut butter on my spoon for a number of spoonfuls 🙂

My version is different though, “WWW runs through the town, upstairs downstairs in his nightgown. Rapping at the windows, peeking through the locks, are the children all in bed for now it’s eight o’clock. ” I think of it as a reminder that it is 8:00 as in time for bed, maybe I have had it wrong all these years?!

Hey There. Love nursery rhymes. It’s “funny”. My version of Wee Willie Winky said to me by my mom was more along the lines of making sure the kids were all in bed by 9:00. Hmmmm . . . a smart mom I had perhaps. : )
