Warm Weather Makes Me So Happy

[The above is a vast understatement]

Beach

As I walked to the gym for Cycle this morning, just the smells, the warmth, the green. Gosh I was happy! I did not like going in a dark room for the class, but it was a great workout and worth the brief dip into the darkness.

Back at home I snacked on a few dried plums and then made lunch at 12:30.

IMG_9974

Do you love tuna salad?

Do you like smoked sardines?

Then you MUST try smoked trout!!

IMG_9973

I picked up a tin at Trader Joe’s on our last visit because I love their smoked sardines and herring so much. This may have topped all of the other tinned fish!! It had the lightness of tuna (without the mercury) and the lovely smoked flavor of pulled pork. In fact, I bet I could turn this into a pulled pork sandwich pretty easily with some BBQ sauce. The smoked flavor was greater than the fishy flavor, so it barely felt like I was eating a fish.

I prepared the salad simply with 2 tsp mustard, 1 tsp mayonnaise, 3 pinches Old Bay, a pinch of salt and pepper.

Served on saltines! I used to have tuna salad on saltines all the time for lunch when I was in high school.

IMG_9967

I had a celery stalk for extra dipping and a sliced plum on the side

IMG_9970

IMG_9968

Great filling lunch! It’s too bad I only bought one tin as an experiment. Need more trout!

Warm, humid weather delights this Louisiana native too! I will have to try the smoked trout. I love tuna on crackers. I could eat that every day! I even crave tuna right out of the pouch! Thanks for the tip.

When I want a quick lunch, I usually always go to the kitchen cubbard for some tuna to make a tuna sandwich–yummy!

I just fell in love with tuna sandwiches all over again!!! However, my fiancé and I are thinking about trying for a baby sometime soon–should I be eating much tuna (mercury-wise), and if so, are there kinds that don’t scoop up dolphins in search of tuna?

Chunk light is the lowest in mercury. I think the general public rec is 2-3 times a week. You should try the trout to have it more! Or sardines!

Is the trout canned like tuna? Already flaked? I’m going to TJ’s this weekend and am thinking about picking some up. I ran out of pistachios and fig butter the other day and have to make the trip…I just wish I didn’t have to go all the way to Chapel Hill to get it (boo…hiss)

It’s kind of incredible how much weather affects my mood. I am a miserable, miserable person in the winter. I just HATE being cold and uncomfortable for several months at a time. As soon as warm weather hits, I immediately feel like a new person. I already moved from New England to the Mid-Atlantic, but I think I might need to move even further south!

Trout is definitely a good alternative to tuna – since it’s so easy to throw into a salad or pasta I end up eating tuna a lot more than any other fish but the mercury is a real concern. I tried to do the sardines thing by mashing them with olive oil, lemon, and capers and spreading on crackers but it was still too fishy. Too bad because they are such a good source of omega-3s/fatty acids.
