Wake-Up Call

Literally! Matt’s phone rang at 4AM asking if he could come in to work – someone must have slept through their alarm and Conor was double staffed. Matt was supposed to work 9-5, I believe, so he didn’t get in bed that early. He’ll need a nice nap today for sure! He never, ever complains about work though, so I’m so glad he’s happy no matter what the time.

I fell back asleep like the princess and the pea and slept until 8AM!!!!!!!!! I didn’t set my alarm because I was going to wake up to Matt’s, so I guess I was stuck in my dreams. That would be 9 hours of sleep. Yikes. A little too much for me.

What’s almost as bad as finding a live roach in your house?

Finding a ROACH WING on the carpet. Where’s his body!?!? We’ve been really lucky with roaches/bugs this summer ever since I sprayed the outside door frames with some bug spray, so this took me by surprise. I am an expert bug spotter – I can walk in a room and spy anything moving, so I nearly jumped out of my skin when I saw this wing.

Breakfast rocked! (Um, I think all of my meals have "rocked" lately!)

IMG_1450 (480x640)

Pineapple chobani

Erewhon Raisin Bran

Chia seeds

Malted barley

Rhubarb Raspberry Ginger preserves

Barney Butter

IMG_1449 (480x640)

You guys said you were excited to read how the pineapple Chobanis are – well I’ve already had 2 of ’em!!!! You must have forgotten that I proclaimed them the very best flavored yogurt I have ever tasted. They are fabulous – thick, creamy, not too sweet. I would buy the flavor by the case for sure.

IMG_1451 (480x640)

This bowl was supposed to have a peach too, but I let it sit for a day too long and it went funky on me 🙁 Guess I got my fruit serving from the bits of pineapple in the yogurt, raspberries in the preserves and raisins in the cereal 😉

IMG_1448 (480x640)

And I can’t wait to buy another bag of Charlottesville Shenandoah Joe coffee. Maybe if we move there I can make it my work space! Really the best plain (non-flavored) coffee I’ve ever had. And I only have about 1 cup left!

Dontcha just love French press froth bubbles!?

Kath, if you are still having roach troubles, you might try this tip I saw at Lifehacker…

I guess you could say it’s the “green” approach:

“Here’s a safe approach to getting rid of roaches. Get yourself an empty glass jar. A washed out mayo jar will do. Dump your used coffee grounds into the jar; at least, enough to cover the bottom. Put the jar outside. You’ll need to sit the jar on the ground and tip it at a slight angle to lean against a wall or something. Don’t throw the lid away.

The roaches will not be able to resist the coffee’s aroma. They’ll climb up the wall and down into the jar to get to the grounds. Because the glass is slippery, they won’t be able to get out. If there are any roaches around, it won’t take long before you find your jar filling up. Get your gloves, put the lid on tight and toss the whole thing.

Just be sure you use your jar outside. You don’t want to lure the creepy crawlers into your house to get rid of them. Oh, a couple of spoons of wet instant coffee will work just as well.”

    Betsey ,
    My routine:

2 cups of water on high for 3 minutes
3 heaping spoonfuls of coffee in the press
Pour water over coffee and wait 60 seconds
    Stir
    Set timer for 3 minutes
    Press
Meanwhile, heat a few tbsp milk in microwave and then pour coffee over milk.

I read recently that the fresher your grind of beans is the more gas the produce in that first step and the more froth comes out. Try my method with fresh beans and see if you get it!
