Up With A Jolt, Er Bolt!

We woke up to lightening this morning! Sadly our beautiful day left during the night.

A rainy breakfast cheered me up – Cottage Cheese Scottish Oats

IMG_6547Blog

I have to say, I’m getting a little tired of the Scottish oats. They’re a little too much like a porridge and not enough chew or volume. Even though a serving is 1/4 a cup, they do not plump up as much as 1/3 cup rolled oats do (which is less than a 1/2 cup serving!) But we are out of rolled oats so it’s Scottish until I get to the grocery store! I also prefer Quaker’s rolled oats because they are a bit doughier than the bulk bin kind, so that means a longer wait to get to a Quaker store.

IMG_6539Blog

The Mix

  • 1/4 cup Scottish oats
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • Half banana
  • Pinch salt
  • Splash vanilla
  • 1/4 cup cottage cheese [Whole Foods, low-fat, organic], stirred in at end
  • Lynda’s granola
  • Maranatha AB
  • Danielle’s Toasted Coconut Chips that are almost gone!

Peppermint tea (decaf) plus a few swigs of coffee to test out one bakery contender!

We’ve got two meetings this morning and dinner company tonight. Gonna be busy!

Do you like Chai tea? Drinking a cup of decaf chai in the morning with a splash of milk has helped wean me from being dependent on coffee. It’s rich and bold so I’ve found it a good substitute 🙂

I have become quite the oatmeal snob these days. I went to my in-laws house this past weekend and they buy a super cheap store brand of rolled oats. I don’t know what the company does to the oats, but they are easily half quick cooking and half rolled…it’s gross. I do like Kroger and Publix store brand rolled oats too, but again, they are all rolled, not a funky mixture.

I’m going to try and switch to decaf iced coffee once summer hits, but it’s so hard to get off of it! I get so loopy and tired without a cup of regular/decaf in the morning. My yoga teacher’s been trying to get me to quit, and I went coffee-free for the month of January and really liked how I felt. I’ll have to use May as my coffee detoxing time!

Hey Kath! I’ve only been reading your blog for just a few months and I love it! I’ve made “doughy” smoothies for the last two mornings and they are superb! Have you ever tried yerba mate tea instead of coffee? It has almost the same amount of caffeine as coffee, but it affects your body much differently. It gives you energy more slowly (no crazy coffee caffeine spike) and it’s not as addictive. I can go a morning without some and still feel good. The taste takes some getting used too, but you can always add honey!

I discovered the other day that my local ‘healthy’ grocery store (natural grocers by vitamin cottage, they’re a regional chain) has two types of bulk rolled oats – regular rolled oats and old fashioned rolled oats. The old fashioned seem to be equivalent to the quaker oats and I can buy them organic for just a few cents more per lb. than I spend on the conventional quaker at Costco. So you might keep an eye out for ‘old fashioned’ rather than just rolled oats in the bulk section as well!
