Tourist Destination

Today has been awesome so far!! We’ve been really busy and I’ve been running around the store – more than made up for missing my run this morning!

We’ve also had some exciting visitors!! It’s so exciting when people come from far and wide to visit the bakery.

KERF reader Meredyth is teaching English in Malaysia and her mother came in to buy her a bunch of goodies to send to her! Hi Meredyth!

IMG_1494 (427x640)

ALSO, Kori and Kaci came to Cville from Oak Ridge, TN to celebrate their 23rd birthday!! I am honored they chose to have lunch at the bakery on the special occasion : )

IMG_1496 (640x427)

Annnnnd our college buddies came in for lunch!! Thanks for your support, guys!

IMG_1497 (640x427)

I nibbled on a few Cville Granola clusters throughout the morning and just sat down to a delicious Tofu + Pesto sandwich. YUM! I really can’t pick a favorite between this guy, the Curried Tuna or the Monticello Garden Hummus. They each take the top spot depending on my mood!

Matt is home napping (he only got 5 hours of sleep last night : ( ) and he’s coming back at 3 dressed for the wedding so that I can go home and shower to fancy myself up too.

Time to go bag some bread!

Some locations do have gluten free bread (ours here has it one day a week) but cross contamination is an issue if they are making it everyday along side the other bread.

Yummm. I love tofu AND pesto. Recently I’ve heard something about the amount of processing in creating tofu. What is your view on that? Everything I’ve heard/seen/read points to tofu, as a soy product, being a highly nutritious food, but the processing, I guess I’ve never thought that much about it until now. What do you think?

Speaking of visitors… I had the pleasure of visiting a GH last week! I just moved halfway across the country (Canada) and travelled the U.S. route through North Dakota, Minnesota, WIsconsin and Michigan. Because of you and your store, I’ve been dying to try GH, so I looked up locations close to our route. I convinved my parents to make a slight detour to Grand Blanc, Michigan for lunch! All of the staff was extraordinarily friendly, especially the guy manning the til and sample board! I explained to him how I found the bakery and he said he would check out your blog! After ordering our lunch, he offered us all a free cookie as well! We also stocked up on some bread and coffee – the apple cinnamon loaf was amazing and I am enjoying their blueberry coffee in my new apartment! Thanks for introducing me to GH! Too bad there isn’t one closer! *Sigh* 🙂

I was just a “tourist” (well, kinda) in Central Illinois, and had to seek out their local Great Harvest. My extended family all lives there, but no one knew about it. I HAD to introduce them! We took home a couple of loaves of bread, some blondies, dog treats and a giant cinnamon roll… as well as some jam (though it was from Arkansas). My Gram said that they blondie was the best thing she had eaten in the past year! That’s saying something.

This particular GH (Peoria, IL) had SO MUCH MERCH! It was unreal. I’m used to the CLT ones, which don’t have very much. It was interesting to see the differences in the stores. They also had tables, etc, as you do.

(I’ve been mia with traveling lately, and am just catching up on posts. I missed KERF!) 🙂

They had the entire line of Naturally Nutty, and lots of jams and fruit butters… the bread boards, bread knives, and spreaders/spatulas.

But what was new to me was the cute assortment of kitchen towels and aprons that they carried… soup/sauce mixes… as well as flavored butter (herb and cinnamon flavors) made in the store, in little 8 oz plastic containers. They also had gift bags and cards (boutique-type stuff), and some mugs and teacups, etc. And, they packaged their cookies into 6-packs, as well as selling them solo (which was also new to me). (They also had the Popeye bread – which I was able to sample. I had never tried it. I don’t think CLT GH makes that?).

Like I said, it was a LOT of stuff. (But they had a lot of room – it was the biggest GH I’ve seen. Rent is probably not too high in Peoria!). They seemed to do good business though, which made me happy. My extended family are now converts!

Oh cool, we do lots of that!! We don’t have spatulas or aprons, but we do plan to make the butter spreads soon and we do gift bags, cards (GH CLT has those!) all the Nat Nutty’s and more. Thanks for the tips!
