Too Much Of A Sleep Thing

When I was in college there was a semester my junior year when I didn’t have class until 11:30am. As a result, I slept in – getting 9-10 hours of sleep each night.

Ironically, I could not keep my eyes open come mid-afternoon and I felt even more tired than I used to! Finally I decided I was wasting too much time sleeping and set an alarm clock for 8.5 hours max. And all of a sudden I felt like my old self again. I was perky and energized all afternoon.

I’m telling you this because I think there is most definitely such a thing as too much sleep! It’s hard to realize because you feel tired, but for me, getting more than 8.5 hours is not ideal! And the past few nights I think I have gotten too much. I have felt so tired in the afternoons, yet I’ve slept plenty of hours. Time to set an alarm again!

IMG_9682Blog

I also had a raging headache last night – I think those few days of coffee got me BACK on caffeine!

Breakfast rocked!!

IMG_9684Blog

Eggy chia seed OIAJ.

I think this jar has been heated in water way too many times!

The Coconut Butter Mix

  • 1/3 cup oats, milk
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1/2 banana
  • Pinch salt
  • Splash vanilla
  • 1/2 egg (half because I made a double pot with Matt), whisked in at end of cooking
  • Toppings: Ambrosial orange granola (CHEW!), Grandma Candy’s Black Cap Jam, coconut butter residue, Sunflower butter ( <—couldn’t resist! I haven’t had a good drippy nut butter in days)

IMG_9678Blog

Chai tea + peppermint tea. Mixing is my new thing!

IMG_9680BlogIMG_9677BlogIMG_9673Blog

Have a great day!

I have huge, huge problems with becoming ridiculously tired in the afternoons, as in a I honestly can’t keep my eyes open. Sometimes it happens no matter what I do, but I’ve found the best remedy is a consistent sleep schedule. That means getting roughly the same amount of sleep each night, going to bed at a similar time, and waking up at a similar time. Sleeping in on the weekends is not good for me. However, it’s a bit difficult in real life to maintain a consistent sleep schedule, but I do my best.

I definitely believe in too much sleep! Sometimes it’s so hard to not sleep in when I’m able to though. I function best at 7 hours of sleep but sometimes the day at work makes me so tired, I go to bed TOO early and then get closer to 8-9. I always wake up groggy!

I’m totally with you. I find that when I get 7-8 hours of sleep, it’s perfect. More or less than that, and I feel groggy all day [though if I sleep less than 7 hours, I also feel extremely hungry and yuck all day too].

I love mixing tea. I’ve been thinking of trying a peppermint/lavendar mix this weekend to change things up. Have a great day, Kath.

It’s been so weird lately for me with the whole “too much sleep” deal as well. I am a student and right now exams are at all different times and find that if I am not studying, I’m sleeping! Naps are here and there plus over 9 hrs at night! It’s funny to think I need a nap when before this crazy, ‘off’ week I would go to bed between 10-11, wake up at 6:30 and be on the go with exercise ALL day.

I’m ready to quit these naps and get back to a routine 🙂

I think the abnormal cold, cloudy weather contributes here in TN.

I definitely experience the same thing when I sleep too much. I give myself an extra hour or so on the weekends, but I try to avoid any massive sleep-in unless I’m ill so that I don’t get the dreaded sleep hangover!

Too much sleep?!?! Say it ain’t so! 😛
(Of course, this is coming from someone who is *lucky* to get 6 hrs/night. I get by on 6 – but 5 hours (which sometimes happens) just about kills me. That is definitely my minimum!).
Sunday is my only day of the week to sleep in, which now means 8:30 or so (oh, the days when sleeping it meant until 11:30 am or noon! *sigh*). I love my sleep – and don’t get near enough.
Consider yourself lucky that you can choose how much rest you get! 🙂

Usually all strung together 🙂 Sometimes not. 2 + 3 type of thing. That’s not ideal. But it’s amazing that I went from 9 hrs to 5 hrs and altho I would prefer more, I am making it work. As I always say, I’ll sleep when Im dead but for now, there’s ABCs to learn and work to do and blog posts to write so sleep….well….it’ll happen one day 🙂

    hi! Im Kath.

I'm a Registered Dietitian, healthy eater, and mom of two from Charlottesville, Virginia. Here you’ll find a healthy mix of real-life meals made from whole ingredients balanced with the pleasures of life, including buttercream frosting and good wine. Plus a sprinkle of nutrition, home life, beauty, parenting, and travel.
