Three Cheers For ?

Our yard

 this !

IMG_7591 (640x427)

Today’s weather was GORGEOUS! Close to 70 degrees and sunny.

IMG_7590 (640x427)

I could not resist giving a run a try!!

But not without a stop to Harris Teeter for groceries and blister Band-Aids. (Also put on my thinnest socks! I think thick cotton socks are what caused this in the first place.)

IMG_7597 (640x427)

I set off on a run with the intention of staying very close to my house. I did a figure 8 of about 3 miles so I was never more than 1.5 away.

The run was great!!

IMG_7587 (427x640)

5.22 miles in a swift pace. I averaged about an 8:50 mile. (Mile 3 was all uphill – good practice for my hilly half!)

IMG_7594 (640x427)

The good news is that my blister did fine!!! No pain at all.

In fact, the title of this post was going to be "three cheers for Band-Aid"

HOWEVER – when I took my shoe off after the run I noticed that the band-aid had SLIPPED (despite its claims for staying on through all sports and showers!) I would have been in trouble had I gone a few more miles. SO glad I decided to roll in at 5 and not 7 or 8.

BOO BAND-AID!! Going to try to return the box to Harris Teeter, which has a pretty good return policy.

Snacks this afternoon were my apple from lunch (never got around to eating him) and a PB&J LaraBar that JESSIE gave to me at the brunch last month!!!!!!!!!! Love the flavor, but it’s still not my very favorite 🙂

Photo

Due to the awesome spring weather…we grilled!!!

I picked up radicchio and asparagus at Harris Teeter to go with the very last of the Apple Lentil Walnut muffins. These lentil loaves were SO GOOD as leftovers, and as you can see, I got my effort’s worth out of them. Will definitely make them again!

IMG_7615 (640x427)

IMG_7605 (640x427)

Also grilled some tofu and carrot for my lunch tomorrow!! I just threw it in and am so glad I did because I have a killer salad for tomorrow!

IMG_7599 (640x427)

The radicchio and asparagus just got a little olive oil and salt and pepper. More and more I just want to taste the flavorful veggies!

IMG_7608 (640x427)

IMG_7606 (640x427)

IMG_7610 (640x427)

IMG_7613 (640x427)

Wanted to have all my blog work done by 8 so I could veg on the couch (with laundry to fold!) but looks like I’m not going to make it to the TV tonight. We did finish The Office – so cute!

G’nite!

What gorgeous tulips! I can’t wait until spring is in full bloom 🙂 Whenever I get blisters, I just tape them with foam tape…something I learned from my ballet years! It never slips and doesn’t hurt to rip off, just make sure you take it off as soon as you’re done your workout to let the blister breathe! Have a great night 🙂

I get chafing across my chest if I run more than 10km. I’ve tried lots of different sports bras and they all hurt. Do you ever get this on longer runs? Any suggestions. My podiatrist suggests wearing 2 pairs of thin socks for blister problems. I think it kind of works.

Get Feetures socks! I bought a new pair of running shoes on Saturday. The girl at the store convinced me that I could do my 7 mile run on Sunday in them if I wore Feetures socks (not cotton). She was so confident in them that she even GAVE me a $10 pair of socks to try out. FANTASTIC!!! No blisters, no pain, new shoes! I ended up ordering 5 more pairs on Amazon because they were only 6.25 apiece.

Ahhh…so jealous of your beautiful weather and yard! 😀 Spring is such a lovely time of year.

Glad to hear your blister was totally pain-free today! I used to go hiking a lot and ended up with blisters all the time. Since there was no way around hiking down a mountain, I had to rely on finding a way to keep the blister pain free while still walking on it. The solution? Moleskin! I can’t say it makes everything *completely* pain free, but it sure helps. 😀

Hi Kath, Love your Blog and those flowers. You could try tincture of benzoin to make the skin sticky around the blister before you add the moleskin. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tincture_of_benzoin Just don’t get it on the blister itself as it stings like hell (its antiseptic so it wouldn’t actually do any harm, but it would hurt). I used to have the same problem making moleskin stick in some old hiking boots that were not exactly breathable, and thats the trick I used. The other thing is to get socks that wick moisture away.

Those blister band-aids are pretty good if you tape them on. I got a bad blister on the side of my foot from a pair of dress shoes, and I have been protecting it by putting a band-aid on the blister and then wrapping my foot in lots of paper medical tape (I’ve used other tapes too, but I think I like the paper tape best — and it’s cheapest. I wrap my foot in tape or at least wrap the tape half around so that the band-aid/tape does not move around.
When you get the right amount of tape on, it works wonders! I put paper tape on my feet before runs all of the time to prevent blisters. Any spots that seem susceptible to blisters or past blister sites, I wrap up!
Moleskin is also great — but I think you need to err on the side of using too much of it in order to prevent it from moving around.

No flowers here, but mountains are nice, too 🙂 Veggies are a great way to celebrate the start of Spring.

I see everyone has questions about your wardrobe on this post! What kind of shirt did you wear for your run? I love it, but I can’t quite make out the logo!

I feel like I have so much to say about this post!
1.) those purple flowers are gorgeous and such a nice reminder that spring IS coming 🙂
2.) fabulous green running top! what a great color, and I love that it has thumb holes
3.) pb &j larabar = favorite flavor. so good.
4.) the grilled veggies/tofu and your dinner plate are making my mouth water.

Good job on the run! I think it must be the material of the bandaids because the reusable moleskin I bought looks the same – and it doesn’t stick at all! Well, it does in the beginning but, like you said, if you plan to get any mileage in, it’s not going to stay put! Hopefully you can find something better.

I love those little muffins! Can you think of any substitutes for some of the hard-to-find ingredients? I’m thinking of the kombu, mirin, and arrowroot … any suggestions?

I finally tried the PB & J Larabar and thought it was horrible. Super tart and bitter! 🙁 Maybe it’s b/c I got it at TJ Maxx on clearance. LOL It wasn’t expired, though.

I agree about the PB&J. My favorite is a toss up between the Coconut Cashew and the Gingersnap. Yum. 🙂

I’m loving your running shirt with the thumb holes. Looks perfect for Spring and Fall when I don’t want to wear gloves. 🙂 What brand is it?

Oh, and I had dog-eared the page for that Apple Walnut Lentil Loaf in my Clean Foods book ages ago. After you made them I decided it was time to do the same! So. Good. 🙂 Though I made the Tofu Stuffed Shells from that book as well this weekend and was nearly as impressed, so don’t rush to try that one….

Cotton is rotten! Moisture wicking socks are the way to go.

I would make sure that you followed the directions for putting the band-aid on closely before you return them – mine always stay, but you have to make sure to put them on correctly.

Also – cotton socks?! Really?!? No wonder you got a blister. Switch to moisture-wicking socks!

I’ve never had luck with band-aids not slipping either. When breaking in new skates, I would always get blisters/wounds on my ankles, but it didn’t matter what I chose to put on them to protect them, they would slide off anyways. I eventually gave up and suffered through it – sometimes, that’s easier than trying to pad it.
