She’s quite the trooper – spent 2 years in Niger in the Peace Corps and then went back to school for nursing at Duke and just landed a job! She’s taking a trip to DC before it starts and stopped by to visit.
We took advantage of the sunshine once she arrived to take a walk over to UVA for a little tour
Zoom in to that number! It’s always SO exciting to see it featured!
Once home, we were greeted by a tiger
And then opened some wine to chillax
For dinner tonight, we had Karen and Faith and Tate over to meet Kirst and enjoy some delicious beany soup.
Made from a Frontier mix! We added tomatoes, kale and red wine to the mix
With plain yogurt, it was quite delicious!!
Karen brought a green salad, dressed in garlic gold vinaigrette
Faith brought over some doughy, crusty bread
I had a coupla glasses of wine – that left me laughing so hard that I couldn’t breathe hearing Karen talk about her Vaseline routine to keep her facial skin supple!
For dessert I broke out some dark chocolate paired with orange and apricots
And we all had a blast trying to tackle impossible challenges – like picking up a $20 bill on one foot with no arms.
FYI, Faith can do it but I have yet to tumble to the floor!
Too bad we didn’t have any saltines!
Courtney @ The Granola Chronicles says
Oh, your favorite number makes an appearance!
Looks like you had a fun day/evening with friends!
Stacy @ Every Little Thing says

Love the simplicity of that dessert! Such great flavors.
Jessica @ How Sweet It Is says
I would totally fall on my face!
Oh I made that exact soup a couple days ago, LOVED it. In fact, I’ve tried quite a few of their soups and they never disappoint!!! So YUMMM!
Holly @ Couch Potato Athlete says
Minnesota bean soup! Woohoo!
I definitely need to try that dollar bill trick — although I’m sure I would either land on my face or maybe do a somersault and land on my butt!
What an awesome thing that Kirst did with the peace corp! And she is super tall 🙂
You can make even the simplest of foods look special and elegant with your presentation and photography skills. The chocolate, orange, and apricot picture had me drooling! Your day sounds like it was wonderful, and I’m glad you were able to catch up with an old friend. Have a great nigth!
Melanie @ Jon and Melie says
Small world – does Kirst know Donnie Bledsoe? He’s a friend of ours and he’s in Duke’s Nursing Program right now too – the accelerated one.
Hmmm, name sounds familiar, but I can’t place a face with it.
Kirst is superb to have served in Peace Corps 🙂 and the foods, droolicious!!!!
I think Karen needs to do a vlog demonstrating her Vaseline routine! 🙂
[email protected] says
OMG I second that!! That would rule!
Third! Please Karen?!! 🙂
I would love to at least know what that routine is, she does have great skin!
Nicole (the other one) says
My dermatologist is OBSESSED with Vaseline, and her skin is beautiful (so is Karen’s!).
yes…karen need to demonstrate! i love vaseline!
Hilarious! I use vaseline around my eyes to prevent crows feet – I think it really works because people often think I’m 10 years younger than I really am! Go VAS!
Looks like a great visit/day/meal. Faith is my hero, impressive!
Maryea @ Happy Healthy Mama says
Looks like such a fun evening! The oranges+dark chocolate sounds like a perfect dessert.
Katelyn @ Chef Katelyn says
I absolutely love UVA! It is the most gorgeous campus I have ever seen! I’m so glad you had fun in the sun, Kath! 🙂
Your dessert looks a lot like mine tonight, but I had dried mango – my newest obsession. Tell Karen I use Vaseline on my eyes at night. It moisturizes my eyelashes – try it!
Emily @ One Sweet Vegan says
My mom has always used vaseline to remove her eye makeup. But, it makes her mascara slide all over the next day. ha 🙂
Ann Claire says
Just came across your bloggie. Looks like a fun night! I now really want to try the $20 bill thing! haha
I was excited by that image too, but because of the Australia part, not the 26 part. My country represent! 😛

OMG you used the word “supple”… that word is just… so…odd, to me!
And pllllllease tell me that there is another way to pick up that bill other than by the mouth…. I am just *cringing* thinking of all of the possible germs!
Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) says
after waitressing, i can pick up money on the floor faster than you can say…finders keepers 🙂
I perked up at Karen’s skin suppleness routine…because in that video with her saying the words? I did the math when she talked about her HS reunion, and her skin is amazing.
Tell us Karen. 🙂

What a fun time. Old friends make you feel like a teenager again.
CathyK @ www.1970kikiproject.wordpress.com says
i smear vaseline on my face before heading outside when it’s super cold out – it protects my face (don’t notice the cold as much) and keeps skin soft! sometimes the most basic of products just can’t be beat!
good effort on the dollar bill contest! 🙂
Lauren at KeepItSweet says
Now I want to try that!

Karen sounds hilarious – you must have her do a vlog about her Vaseline Regime!
Melomeals: Vegan for $3.33 a Day says
that looks like the perfect meal. I love the photo of the porch with the chairs.
That cat looks JUST like a kitty in our neighborhood that always greets us when we get home and even comes into our house to visit time and again.
One of my grandmother’s friends is 97 and has put Vaseline on her face every night since her mid 20’s and she BARELY has and wrinkles! I swear, she still looks like she’s about 70, it’s amazing!

How do you get that kind of old-school/vintage-y look to your photos? gorgeous!

That soup looks so great – really dense – I hate “thin” soups.
But the bread is the winner! 🙂
what a fun dinner, especially the $20 bill part!
Kristi (Hiding in Honduras) says

I think it’s funny that you have a friend named Kirst and I’m curious have you ever met another Kath? Both are unique versions of the full length name that I’ve never heard before! Go K names!
