The Corner

Remember Frog and Toad books!?

When I was small, not much bigger than a pollywog, said Frog, “My father said to me, ‘Son, this is a cold, gray day but spring is just around the corner.’ I wanted spring to come. I went out to find that corner.”

Happy Spring! And Happy Birthday MOM!!!

Speaking of mom, she bought me the cutest coral orange bowls when we were shopping this week. And they could not be a more perfect size for oatmeal!

I’ve got 10 pages written on my paper and only need to get to 12! But I still have my biggest/most researched section left! But the hard part is over. Now it’s just downhill. I’m taking a break to go workout and then make lunch and will get back on it this afternoon. I might insert a Target trip in there too 🙂

Thanks for birthday wishes Kath and everyone. And hooray for Frog and Toad. My favorite lines are in a chapter titled something like “Alone.” And they go something like “I am glad I am a frog. I am glad that I am green. I am glad that you are my friend.”

Oh, I was at Target yesterday-bad idea! I did have to shop for Easter, and we needed new drinking glasses-they all seem to disappear?! And then I saw the cutest “iced tea” glass set, so of course I had to get that! But at least I am (almost) ready for Easter. I may also have to go to Costco today, which could be even worse!

Hi Kath! Anyone else feel free to chime in as well…

On Sunday I am going to brunch for Easter at the yacht club with my family. Our reservation is for 11:00. I HATE eating at 11:00 because I will have already have had breakfast and won’t be ready for a huge lunch. Plus, I’m always afraid by eating an earlier brunch I’m gong to be starving for a later lunch and later dinner or something later one. How should I do this? I’m not worry about healthy selections, it is a buffet and they have tons of options like cooked dishes, made to order omelets, fruit, peel and eat shrimp etc. I’ll probably have an egg beaters omelet, some shrimp and some fruit. Should I eat a little breakfast and hope I’m not starving at 11:00? Or should I eat a normal breakfast and just eat a little at brunch. You eat brunch quite often so I was just curious. It wouldn’t bother me so much but our reservation is early… Blah.

Kelly, what time will you be waking up? If you’re getting up super early, i’d say have a real breakfast. Otherwise, if I were you and wasn’t getting up until like 9 or 10, i would just have maybe a little bowl of cereal or a kashi granola bar or something to tide me over until 11. That way you can enjoy yourself at brunch 🙂

KellyL, I’d have a smaller breakfast and adjust my portions during brunch accordingly. This way if you’re hungry, you can eat a bunch. I hate going out to eat when I’m full. I just end up eating anyway and feel guilty or just sit there and stare at walls if I can’t even fit anything into my stomach. I don’t like 11am brunches either…

    Kath, I looove that bowl!

Does anyone here have problems with the quality of Target’s dishes? I bought the cutest plates from there and almost every single one of them is chipped. I’m so embarrased to serve dinner in them but I just can’t bring myself to throw them away until my wedding, when we get better quality stuff (it’s 3.5 months away!).

Speaking of “corners,” I’m turning the corner after suffering through the worst of the flu. When is it considered safe to start exercising again? I’m getting antsy and feeling so lethargic, but I don’t want to push it too soon only to relapse. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Thanks. I usually get up around 6:30 or 7:00. I’ll probably go for a run and then see how hungry I am. I might make some eggs and a piece of toast to hold me over or have a luna bar or something. I’ll get my fruit in at brunch so I just need some protein and fiber to get me to 11.

I too hate to go out to eat full. I hate buffets because I can’t eat my share of the price (at nice places) so then I just sit there and stare at everyone while they eat their 10 plates. I’m content with going through the line 1 or 2 times for a NORMALM amount of food.

    Hi!

Are HR monitors reliable and accurate? Sometimes I feel it’s too good to be true because I burn a lot more calories than what is shown on the cardio machines I use.

Also, did you ever face plateau? What do you think really helped you lose weight for good? Exercise or counting calories? I have the same stats as you but my weight is coming off slowly and am kinda stuck at the same weight right now. My boyfriend has dropped pounds effortlessly! It’s so frustrating. I eat very well and am an aspiring RD myself too, exercise 5-6x a week for a hour each… argh!

Anyway, I wanted to say how much I enjoy your blog, it’s very addictive. Thanks for all you do!

Does cooked oatmal refrigerate well overnight? I accidentally made a double batch this morning, so I ate half and put the rest in the fridge. Will it reheat well tomorrow?

Kristin- I have 2 different Polar ones and I feel like they are true. The machines always give me these gigantic numbers and I know that I did not burn 600 or something calories in 30 minutes. I work hard but not that hard 😉

Plateau-re-evaluate what you’ve been doing. Do a food diary, find the little things that keep you from progressing….workouts: change it. Do intervals, do bodyweight circuits, learn to jump rope, try a new machine….
or you might have to take it easy for 1 week.
I periodize my workouts and every 5th week is a light and easy week (still working out, just at a much lower volume) to let my body recover. By the end of it I am dying to go all out again in the gym and have tons of strength.
    Do you lift weights?

    Sorry for the book :O

NCCarter- I’d keep it and reheat it with a bit of added milk/soymilk. Or enjoy it as it is-it will probably be all dense and oatmeal-cake-like.
Let me know what you did!

    katie ,
Ideally you should just have “peanuts” and perhaps “Salt” in your peanut butter ingredients list. Some brands add palm oil, which isn’t bad like trans-fats are, but it’s not as good as a more natural brand for eating on a regular basis. If you’re talking about the JIFF with partially hydrogenated…. then yes, that’s probably not the best choice either. I’m not sure if JIFF makes any all-natural brands?

    Betsy ,
The bowl is from some boutique gift shop, but I do love anthropologie!

    Kelly L.,
As you probably know, we’ve gone out to brunch a lot lately. I tend to have a smaller breakfast (since I have that everyday) and eat more at brunch so 1) It will hold me until dinner 2) It’s kind of a special occasion. Holding back on brunch would be much more challenging than just having a smaller breakfast. But do be sure you don’t go to brunch starving! I did that once and it wasn’t pretty 🙂 Brunch tends to have a long wait too (or at least our restaurants do) so I often bring a snack to have like some trail mix to hold me over if I get too hungry. Hope that helps!

    Kris10 ,
If you’re getting the urge to workout, go. Just don’t push yourself too hard.

    Kristin ,
My HRM is rarely higher than the machines, but I feel it is very accurate for me. It’s also very consistent. Susa hit the nail with the plateau suggestions 🙂

    NCCarter ,
If you refrigerate oatmeal, you MUST rehydrate it in the morning with a little milk or some kind of creamy substance or it will be a big jelly block! Give it lots of stirring once you add the milk too.

Again re. HR monitors-the heart rate reading is always the same as on the machines-what differs wildly is the amount of calories burned. I did enter my correct weight on the machine and it still gives me these wild numbers (I do wish it were true I am burning these hundreds of calories LOL).

    Susa,

Thanks for the tips! I do intervals, change my workouts & durations but I don’t lift weights too often, maybe I should. I’m afraid to bulk up. I remember starting to lift weights and ended up gaining weight in the beginning.

If I’m burning so much calories then why aren’t I thinner? *grr* I eat very well but maybe I need to keep track of my portions/calories. I ought to do a food dairy. I’m always hungry too but I make the right food choices as often as possible. Sometimes I think I give up way too early when I’m doing all the right things and still do not see any results and that’s when I give up and become more flexible w/ what goes in my mouth. :/

    Kristin-you’re very welcome!
Yes, a food diary is really helpful. I love the calorieking website-it’s so easy to plug the foods in that I am more than willing to spend money on it. But a plain notebook will do too. Just be honest (that’s hard).

Keep working out-no matter what. Your body needs to move and workouts are not for calorie burning only-they’re to keep you physically and mentally healthy!
As a girl, you WILL NOT BULK UP lifiting weights. Believe me, I have tried for the past 3 years to gain muscle and it it hard work. Besides, it won’t come on overnight-so if you feel your legs or whatever look too strong you can always scale back. A strong and fit body is more attractive than soft mushy skinny-fatness 🙂

I love bodyweight circuits-check youtube for videos. You can do them in your home and don’t need any equipment.

Good luck and keep us posted.
