You are here: Home / Weekend / Sunny Lunch

Sunny Lunch

I am dining in the student union today and was bold enough to open the blinds – now it’s much more cheerful! I hate eating in here because it’s always so dark, but today I was happy with sun on my table. Chem Quiz went very well, and all I have left before I get to head home is a Physio lab exam, which shouldn’t be too hard. I love class days when we take tests! And I should get to leave lab early too since it shouldn’t take more than an hour.

For lunch today I packed two smoked salmon pitas. (We added two more groceries that were on sale at the grocery store on our walk yesterday – salmon and whole chicken that was $.49 per pound!) These were Trader Joe’s pitas, which are on the small side, so I packed two of them.

Stuffed with salmon, dill, spinach and cucumber slices:

Plus some ruby red – my favorite!

A few red pepper strips with raw zuccihini with a tbsp or so of my mother in law’s homemade hummus –

One of my bites!

And TJ’s Pom Greek Yogurt. I was a little disappointed – the consistency was very similar to regular yogurts. It was only slightly thick. I don’t think I’ll buy this again because I’d rather add sugar/mixins myself to plain yogurt than eat pre-sweetened. I just love the taste of plain.

All together –

Lunch calories were about 480.

I’m off to prep for my exam. Adios!!

I was disapointed by the TJs yogurt too..I thougt it was WAY to sweet, and the consistency was all wrong for greek. Oh well. The rest of your lunch still looks good.

I added the no2 cuz i saw there was already a mel on here 🙂

Just wondering, what is an “abs workout” for you? You often talk about how you’re sore after working your abs, but I never get that sore. Am I just not working hard enough? I don’t have a lot of time to spend at the gym, so I like to use the time I have to my benefit. What ab workouts (or other excersizes) would you recommend in a time crunch?

    Mel no2,
just a thought, but I keep an exercise ball at work and do crunches on that…it takes way less crunches to get the desired soreness compared to regular crunches…also planks and sideplanks work well too!

    Mel “numero dos”-
Kath always raves about the ab roller that she digs out of the “toy bin” at the gym. She says it’s the best and she does some rolls to the front and some to either side to get an all around burn… Now, if only I could find the one my parents bought in the 70’s! : )

    Mel#2,
Amanda got it right – I’ve found an old ab roller from the 90s and love it! I also do a lot of planks and push-ups. Only the ab roller leaves me sore!

I was just wondering everyones opinion on yoga. I noticed Kath, that you never really do it, is it because you don’t think it’s a good enough cardio workout or is it just personal preference? I take a 1.5 hour class twice a week and I’m wondering if that’s enough for those days or if I should try to get to the gym and do some cardio as well.

Thanks! And if you’re up north (I’m in freeeeezing bostons), stay warm!

    Mel #2 –

I found an awesome “pilates” ab workout on YouTube the other day… only 10 minutes and great! The other 10 minute workouts by this girl are great, too. There’s a sculpting one with 2 pound weights, a full body “burn” one, a butt/legs one, etc!

    Give it a try 🙂 http://youtube.com/watch?v=mmek7iASeCI

    Sarah,

i do a class called Group Centergy twice a week. it’s a mixture between tai chi, yoga, and pilates. i don’t consider it as much of a “workout” as as “good stretch.” i usually run before class and it’s awesome to stretch out my muscles, focus on breathing, and feel like i’m treating my body well after a good, long run.

i would recommend doing cardio in addition to the class, but it probably depends on your activity level otherwise. i’ve heard an hour long basic yoga class only burns 150ish calories (less than things like hot yoga, spinning, etc.)

    Hi Kath,

I have a class from 6-9 pm this semester… and it is so complicated to plan meals around it!
I’ve tried eating dinner at 5:30, but if I do that… I’m hungry again by 9:30. I can’t put off dinner until 9 either, because my stomach will be growling.

What is your suggestion? I need something that is portable, quiet, and that will hold me over.

Have a happy Monday! Thanks for all of the hard work you put into this blog!

hey Kath, i have a question about the hemp milk, is this something that is sold at a store near you or did you order it online? i have never seen anything like this in a store (although i live in Nebraska so new things take about 10 years to get here). Thanks!

    Sarah,
I am hoping to start doing more yoga. I don’t really like going to yoga classes – I get too bored – but I DO like doing yoga DVDs (I have a set of Yoga Zone ones) that are 20 minutes long or so. I like yoga for it’s meditative and flexibility benefits, so I’m trying to do a few poses before bed each night. I’ve done 2 in a row! I’m hoping to work up to a DVD 2-3 times a week. But I think yoga and pilates are both GREAT additions to an exercise routine.

    Patricia,
I had the same class schedule all fall and ate at the university dining hall at 5:00. I usually had a snack either during class or when I got home. I just planned to have one then because I knew I’d be hungry. I would eat a normal sized early dinner and then have a snack if you need one. 5:00 is very early to eat!

    Fellownutrition,
I got it at EarthFare here in Charlotte. I’m sure Whole Foods has it and other specialty health stores. But I hear that it’s on sale online right now at World Pantry!

    Bev,
I’m not 100% sure what you mean, but my Sigg water bottle doesn’t leak. But I also keep it in the side pocket of my bookbag and not in my lunch bag with the food (it would smush things!)

You answered my question. Putting you water bottle in bookbag makes sense. I didn’t realize you used that also. Thanks 🙂
