Sweet, Spicy, Marshmallow Breakfast

Busy day ahead!! Quiz in Chem, test in Physio lab, lots of Stats to do. Better get a move on!!

Up at 5:15 today and had half a bagel with a tsp of peanut butter –

dsc05955.JPG

The gym was fun because I got some magazines over the weekend!! Did 30 minutes on the Stairmater with Shape and 15 minutes ET with Real Simple. Then I did an ab workout and some push-ups and lunges. Great workout!

I simmered some steel cut oats yesterday while I was studying. The best thing about that? No pots to clean this morning! But the microwave is very busy between 7:30 and 7:45 between two bowls of oatmeal, walnuts and hot tea. The hemp milk was a wonderful addition! I still think it tastes just like marshmallow. I added about 2 oz to my steel cut oats to rehydrate them along with half a banana, flax, walnuts, and almond butter. Delicious!

Good Earth Sweet + Spicy Tea. I still can’t believe I didn’t add splenda to this and it was perfectly sweet! The ingredients include: Red Rooibos, Chicory Root, Artificial Flavor, Rosehips, Cinnamon, Peppermint, Lemongrass, Papaya, Chamomile, Panax Ginseng Leaves, Anise Seed, Ginger Root, Dandelion Root, Orange Peel and Orange Oil.

Breakfast was 430 kcal.

I’m already excited about the dinner we have planned tonight! See you at lunch 🙂

Haha, you and Jenna DID basically have the same breakfast; and I was already planning on having oatmeal with hazelnut-butter and a glass of hempmilk this morning :0D

Good luck with your examinations!! My classes were canceled today, due to below-freezing temperatures (which is a blessing, since I’m ill and already missed Friday’s classes) – “see” you at lunch and dinner!! Can’t wait to see the dinner you’re excited about, haha :0)

Kath, you are motivating me to give tea another try! I’m such a coffee girl, but I know there are so many benefits to drink tea. I’m going to have some tea this morning!

Love sunflower seeds! They have been shown to lower your cholesterol, and have fiber, good fats, protein.

    Hey Kath!

This is a question for you or VeggieGirl (or others!)… I looked up the link you posted on Hemp Milk last night and noticed in the nutritional facts that it has a lot of sugar– 18g for 1 cup of milk. What are your thoughts on this? That seems really high! I am interested in trying it but don’t want to introduce a lot of extra sugar into my diet (more than my normal skim milk would have).

    Have a great day!

I know this has been asked before, but I can’t seem to find the answer… how tall are you? Also what brand were those 10 calorie chocolate discs you posted about awhile back? Thanks!

Liz, Kath says she is 5’2″ in her Land’s End PSA.

Kath I am so glad you liked the Good Earth Sweet & Spicy!! I was not allowed to have any artificial sweeteners (or caffeine for that matter) for a while last fall and I was going thru major withdrawal and that tea was a lifesaver! And the caffeine free actually tastes better than the caffeinated. I also like the little quotes/proverbs/inspirations on the tags. 🙂 Good luck on your test and quiz today!!

Kath, do you like the taste of splenda over sugar? I was just wondering because splenda has calories too less than 5 cals per serving so they can “lawfully” write zero. One cup of splenda has 96 cals!!

Hey Kath! My friend and I tried oatmeal pancakes for the first time today after our morning walk. They were DELICIOUS!!! We cut ours in half and put organic blackberry jam on one piece and your mashed banana/maple syrup mixture on the other.

    Yum!

    Hey Kath,
Totally random, but I thought the morning post would be the most logical place to ask…

I remember a while back you were talking about your alarm clock and how you had two alarms you could set on it and the beep went from quiet to loud. Well, please tell me what kind of wonder alarm clock this is because I’m in desperate need of a new one!

Anyone else have a great alarm clock with two alarms and a “gentle” beep? Help!?!

    Thanks!!

Amandamoo- My bf has an alarm clock he absolutely loves. It’s called the digital zen alarm clock. It actually chimes and the chimes get closer together in interval so you can wake up more gradually. I’m not that picky about my alarm clock but he seems to love it. 🙂

I think the splenda conversation is an interesting one especially considering all of the articles recently about metabolic syndrome and artifical sweeteners in diet soda. Very interest. My personal preference is that I don’t use a lot of sweeteners in my diet so when I do I don’t mind a little of the real thing.

Also for those who are looking for tea to drink without sweeteners I highly recommend Mighty Leaf has some excellent teas. Their vanilla bean tea is delicious and naturally sweet.

I can’t read at the gym. I’ve tried but it’s just too hard to turn the pages and not fall off the elliptical. Music works best for me. Do you ever listen to music while you work out , Kath? I’m just curious.

    Hey Anne,
I looked up hemp milk and the site I found says it only has 5g sugar…maybe the kind Kath used had the vanilla flavor so it was more? But apparently the plain kind has a lot less sugar (see link below)

Love Your blog. Got two questions:
    1. Recently I saw you eat some Edy’s peppermint ice cream. Where did you get it in Charlottte? I’ve been having such a craving for it ever since your post and can’t find it.
    2. Where is there a Trader Joe’s in Charlotte? I just recently discovered earth fare ad fresh marker. Love those places. 🙂 It reminds me of european food stores.

    Thanks

Hmmm yeah that’s probably the plain kind… the link Kath posted last night to the Vanilla kind she had was the sugary one. I’m sure that’s why it’s so tasty! 🙂

    Thanks for the research!

absolutely, Anne, yeah it looks like the vanilla one would be pretty sweet, but the other benefits would probably make it worth it in small portions anyway…I’m definitely gonna give it a try…

    Anne,
Yes, the vanilla hemp milk has 18g of sugar per cup. I don’t really plan on drinking this by the cup, I definitely plan to try the plain too – I just wanted to start with the sweeter one 🙂

    Liz,
I’m 5’2″ and adding this to the FAQ’s right now! The chocolate discs are from our local store, EarthFare, but I bet you could find a similar product in some of the gourmet grocery stores.

    Kay,
Usually a tablespoon in my oatmeal. A little less on yogurt. I think splenda tastes exactly like sugar, so I guess I like them equally. I don’t use splenda for baking or in large amounts, but thanks for pointing out that it’s not totally calorie-free.

    Amandamoo,
I have this alarm clock and really like it a lot, espeically the dual alarms, weekend setting, orange face, and gentle beeps! Sony ICFC180:
    http://www.amazon.com/Sony-ICFC180-AM-Clock-Radio/dp/B000EDTS6A

    Anne,
LOVE my B.Happy bag 🙂 Yes, the strap is plenty long to go over your arm. And it’s not rectangular like in the photos – they are cloth totes. Check out my photos to see them filled with stuff. I think on the Real Food page there’s a comparison to a milk jug.

    Kiala,
I listen to music sometimes (I have an iPod nano) but not on a regular basis, mostly because I am too lazy to change my playlists. I’ll get a good one, listen for a week, then get tired of it and don’t want to pay to download new songs. I have lots of music on my old computer, but I’m too lazy to transfer it! I do listen to music when I run by myself, though. But not always.

    Roxy,
We got the Edy’s Peppermint at Harris Teeter. It might have been an Xmas seasonal. I’ll have to check next time I’m there. Trader Joe’s is down near Ballantyne in the Piper Glen neighborhood. If you take the Rae Rd. exit off of 485, it’s the first left heading back into Charlotte.

    Hey Kath,

I noticed your tea has Rooibos in it. I would like to recommend another great tea containing Rooibos and it’s from Trader Joes. It’s called Ruby Red Chai Rooibos tea. It’s FABULOUS!!

BTW, I don’t know a whole lot about Rooibos but I do know it comes from South Africa and contains high levels of antioxidants.

    Hi Kath,
Just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your blog. Clearly you love oatmeal! I love it, too, but I also love Red River Cereal. Not sure if you can find it everywhere (I’m up north in Minnesota) but if you can, pick it up sometime. Or check out the website: www.redrivercereal.com. As they say on the website, it’s full of “ridiculously healthy ingredients” and is yummy, yummy, yummy.

Regarding the sugar in hemp milk–>18g of sugar is only 6g more than what is in a cup of skim milk. Just thought it would be an interesting comparison.
