Space Cadet

Our Food Comp classroom is always FREEZING , like around 60* or something, so I usually eat lunch outside to thaw for our 15 minute break. But today I wanted to socialize some with the other girls, so I decided to eat inside. But I ran and checked my email first, which threw me off and left only 10 minutes to eat. And I totally forgot to take a picture of lunch !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is only the second time in almost a year I have forgotten to take one.

So here’s a reenactment :

I had Salmon Salad with half a can of salmon, 1 carrot, 1 celery, 1/4 a green pepper, 2 tbsp capers, red curry powder, dijon mustard, and 1 tbsp plain yogurt. It looked like this!

I also had one of the husband’s Wheat n Flax bagels , just plain and sliced. A pretty good representation:

And a plum(b!)

Lab

Today’s lab was not edible – we made all kinds of starch thickeners and  tested the "gel-ability": corn starch, tapioca, arrowroot, potato and AP flour.

The "Line Spread Test" to see how far it spreads –

Tomorrow’s lab is an "eating day" – whole grains!

Workout

Lab got out a little early so I decided to go to Winthrop’s gym for a workout. I did 45 minutes on the ET and about 12 of lifting . This was my first time in the weight room there. It’s really nice (and new!) and has the Free Motion cable equipment that I like a lot. I’m going to try to exercise there more this fall when I have time to kill on campus between an early morning and late afternoon class.

Once home, I had 2 giant strawberries –

And in 5 minutes I’m turning around again to go uptown for Chem. I’m meeting my lab group early, so I’ve got to be there at 4:30. It’s gonna be a late night too. Plowing through!

I’d love to see your picture folder. How do you organize your pics. It’d be interesting to see a slideshow of all your oatmeal =D

Lunch must have been sooo good that you had it before taking a picture of it…

wow only 10 minutes! did you manage to “socialize” while trying to finish all your food?
Just curious, do you enjoy eating alone more or with others? Also, when you eat alone do you usually do it in front of a tv/computer/magazine?

I know that if I eat alone, i have to have the internet or the tv on 🙂

    Nail polish!

Mix a little hot sauce into the nail polish if you want to exchange one kind of bite for another…

hey jessiep, at age 21 i constantly bite my nails also.

so i don’t know what to tell you besides picture your mom in the room every time you start. it at the very least makes me feel guilty (“stop picking!”)

anyway i came here to share an AMAZING discovery. for the perfect, healthy dessert, eat yocrunch yogurt! you know, the kind that comes with mix-in candy things on the top. yes they are a little sugary and 190 calories but it is the perfectly portion control; its nutritious and filling and guarentees you will not overdo it on dessert.

    i’m quite satisfied, thought i’d share =)

R.Leigh- thats a good idea…accept i ADORE hot sauce so i think it would actually make them more likely to head towards my mouth…but it did remind me of those biter nail polishes i have read about, i have looked for them in stores but can never find them, anyone know where i can get it?

Thanks for the idea R.Leigh, and sarah you made me laugh!

    Kath,

When you eat pasta how much do you measure/weigh out?

Also, in terms of maximizing your volume any particular pasta shape or style. Spaghetti noodles are thin, but I love to roll them on my fork which defeats volume eating!

    Chelsea ,
I actually don’t save my photos – they’re all just on the blog! But I think an oatmeal slideshow would make me drool for sure 🙂

    But check these out:
    http://nymag.com/restaurants/features/breakfast/47390/

There was this awesome slideshow I saw of all these people’s breakfast but I can’t find it 🙁

    lara ,
I really enjoy eating slowly and I find that I eat faster and don’t focus on food as much when I’m eating with others, but I wouldn’t say I prefer one or the other, because it’s fun to share food too. I do hate being rushed though! When I’m alone I often get something to read because it’s “hands-free’ where as the computer requires pushing the meal to the side and I lose focus again. But I used to be a really fast eater and I’ve slowed down a TON.

    JessieP ,
While I’m not a nail biter, I’m bad about chewing on my fingers too so I could use some help as well!

    Lauren ,
I almost always weigh out 2 oz of pasta (or in the case of Saturday night’s dinner, just eyeball what I think 2 oz looks like). I like angel hair the best – it’s very voluminous! I think shapes like penne are gone too fast, but I do enjoy them.
