Southern At Heart

So I really, really love big cities. I always think I want to live in them. But my gosh, the South is just gorgeous. I would miss the slow pace of life, the flowers, grass, trees, houses.

IMG_9642 (640x427) IMG_9641 (640x427) IMG_9643 (640x427) IMG_9645 (640x427) IMG_9646 (427x640) IMG_9647 (640x427) IMG_9649 (640x427) IMG_9653 (640x427) IMG_9654 (640x427) IMG_9652 (640x427)

My flight was filled with studying and soy. Joy, that is. I tried the banana flavor. It wasn’t bad! I tried to concentrate on the flavors and I did like them, but I still don’t think these are something I would purchase regularly.

IMG_9635 (640x427)

Also had a cranberry juice and seltzer mix on the plane.

Then I found this guy at baggage claim!

IMG_9637 (640x427)

Unpacked a bit. Ashley hooked me up with the best swag of the trip! She works in the fragrance department of P&G and managed to give us a few “samples” – read full-sized perfumes. I am in LOVE with D&G’s Rose The One and also got Flora by Gucci.

IMG_9638 (640x427)

Matt poured a bit of beer for us all to enjoy with cocktail hour.

IMG_9636 (640x427)

Naughty, naughty bears!!

IMG_9656 (427x640)

It’s hard to come home from a weekend of indulgence and NOT celebrate the reunion of family. It was just a night to have a fun meal and a bit of wine. Can’t turn it down for the sake of “health” because it is healthy to be happy and wine makes me happy.

IMG_9655 (427x640)

IMG_9664 (640x427)

Matt made the dinner tonight, financed by my dad.

Blackened Chicken Tacos!!

IMG_9657 (640x427)

Lettuce + Salsa + Pepper + Chicken + Avocado + Cheddar

[The plain yogurt was very much missed 🙁 ]

IMG_9659 (427x640) IMG_9660 (427x640)IMG_9663 (640x427) IMG_9670 (640x427)

+ Grilled corn with Garlic Gold

IMG_9667 (640x427)

I made a single taco and a taco salad (my fav) with a little of everything.

IMG_9672 (640x427)

IMG_9680 (640x427)

IMG_9673 (640x427)

x2

IMG_9681 (640x427)

After dinner, my dad brought out some cake + cupcakes from our family friend Martin’s birthday this weekend. We all shared them around the table

IMG_9682 (640x427)

The carrot cake was AMAZING!!

IMG_9683 (640x427)

Going to hydrate and hit the sack early tonight. I’m exhausted!

First, gotta give these bears a bath and get their teeth brushed. Too much candy and honey while I’ve been gone!

That looks like one hell of a welcome home meal!
I’ve always lived in MA, but off in the less urban parts, so as much as I love having access to places like Boston, I don’t think I could live without a lawn and quiet places to walk/run

Your view of the South is my view as well. I am focusing on enjoying NYC while I’m here because I know one day, I’ll have grass and flowers again. But, until then, you, Matt, and the bears always have a place to stay!

I feel like I sold the South short. I’m a dyed-in-the-wool northeasterner, and it’s very hard to break out of *this* way of life, but I think it would have been great to give another region a try for college, or a first job after college.

I love the idea of living in the South but I’m really happy where I am, just outside of Washington, DC. I think part of why I love traveling is being able to pretend to live in other cities and countries, and see what that would be like, but I’ve lived here my entire life and can’t imagine leaving.

Gorgeous photos! I think the secret to living in a big city is to find the little areas of lush respite. It’s not something you can do in a weekend,it takes time to find little parks and places just outside the city for easy escape–that said, I understand why not everyone wants to spend most of their time in a concrete jungle!

This is totally not related to this post..But I would love to get some suggestions from you. For work I am getting sent to NY to work for a month. Now I work in a kitchen, so yea I’m surrounded by food. I was just wondering if you had any suggestions for some good breakfast ideas or snack food that would travel well. The hotel is in not a very great area and I work long hours so the only way to get some good food would be to take a cab or the train. I know I could always eat something at the restaurant in the hotel but the idea is to save money!! I was thinking, almonds, granola bars, maybe some healthy instant oatmeal? Thanks!

My ideas are as good as yours. If you check back to my breakfast and lunches from January – June of this year, most of them were all packed and not refrigerated. Larabars (or homemade versions), sandwiches, dried fruit, trail mix, whole fruit, etc all work really well.

I'm a Registered Dietitian, healthy eater, and mom of two from Charlottesville, Virginia. Here you’ll find a healthy mix of real-life meals made from whole ingredients balanced with the pleasures of life, including buttercream frosting and good wine. Plus a sprinkle of nutrition, home life, beauty, parenting, and travel.
