Soup’s On!

Up at 5 this AM. Even though I don’t have to get up at 3am, I still have been going up to bed around 8:30 or so when the husband does and reading/studying for a bit. It’s gotten me in bed earlier, which is nice because I wake up refreshed at 5! This morning I made myself late by listening to NPR (which is my newest addiction, partly politics related) so I didn’t have as much time at the gym as I’d liked. I did 30 minutes on the Stairs followed by 10 on the Stat bike and had to skip out on stretching and stuff to ensure I got to spend some quality time with my oatmeal!

This morning’s bowl ended up quite soupy – not sure why! Maybe because I only cooked one serving, or because the cottage cheese melted a bit, but it was still a GREAT tasting bowl!! I think the cottage cheese really sweetens it up even though it’s not that sweet to begin with.

1/3 cup oats, 2% milk, water

1/2 large banana

Vanilla bean paste, salt

3 tbsp wheatberries

1/4 cup cottage cheese

Pumpkin butter, swirled

Honey Cinnamon PB – yum!

Speak of the devil!! After yesterday’s Yerba Mate post, the husband brought home this box of opened demo tea. It’s a Dark Roast flavor, which I kind of liked, but it got a little bitter after a while. I think I need to take the tea bag out promptly, as tea tends to get bitter if you overbrew it.

Here’s me entering Caitlin’s Lamest Workout Outfit Contest. While my summer gear is not bad (mostly tanks and shorts from Target) my winter gear is FRUMPY, FRUMP, FRUMPALICOUS! I wear these horribly huge sweat pants (easy to get on and off to get to my shorts underneath) and the ugliest color old fleece. And can’t forget the cheap gloves! I could definitely use some sleek cold weather gear 😉

Off to Organic, then studying for Micro all day, plus GOTR.

The “lamest workout outfit contest” is hilariously brilliant! There are many days in winter in which it is impossible to wear anything that feels too fun. Although, last year, I was lucky enough to find some workout clothes (from mec.ca) with fuzzy fleece insides….there were entire weeks I wanted to live in them!!

I guess it makes spring all the more enjoyable! But there is always oatmeal to look forward to in the fall/winter…which is so nice 🙂

i’m so happy to see you post about mate! i live in argentina, where we drink lots (and lots and lots) of it, both in teabags and loose (the traditional way). it’s a nice energizer that doesn’t cause the jitters, like caffeine.

I love mate I’ve been drinking it since I was a kid! So many health benefits. My mom is from Argentina so we grew up with it.

Random strangers give me a hard time if I’m bundled up already they always give the lame “oh are you ready for a blizzard” or something dumb like that. I live in DC and am from South Florida give me a break 🙂

Its finally getting cold over here(52 in the morning )and if I did not have to go to the office today i would be wearing something similar :-). The squash looks amazing. I love delicatas and use them to make ravolis with sage butter. Mate is a good find. I take the bags with me on trips so that I don ‘t break down and drink some nasty instant coffee. It has seen me through many a late night projects. happy weds

Hahaha – I love your lamest workout outfit!

I’ve been having soupy oats the last week or two and I really like them. I don’t know why. I’m into mushy foods.

That Mate Tea is great – they have a bunch of different flavors. I think there’s a chocolate one that I really like, but beware of the hibiscus – it’s kind of gross. They sell them at this cafe near Cornell and when I was in school I’d get them all the time.

    HAHA! GREAT OUTFIT!

I have a theory about why the cottage cheese made your oats sweeter…you know how in baking you add salt to bring out the sweetness more? Or salted nuts to bring out the sweetness in chocolate more? Maybe the cottage cheese had a similar affect on the honey-peanut butter in bringing out the sweetness? What do you think?

Careful with that YUMMY YERBA MATE! That stuff is addicting 🙂

    Carolyn ,
    Welcome!

    Christin S,
Great theory! Also perhaps because dairy is naturally sweet?

    Monique ,
Do you put your milk/oats in cold or boil the milk first? Check out my “All Things Oatmeal” tribute page for a video on how I make it.

Do you actually work out in all that? Or just wear it to the gym? That’s so much fabric, it’d be so hot and hard to move in. You should really invest in some Under Armour. They make amazing cold weather winter gear. They also make amazing stuff for heat, but its cold now, so lets focus on that! Also…peanut butter sounds amazing… omg.

If anyone is having trouble finding pumpkin butter, go to trader joe’s, and stock up! also, try whole foods or any health food store/fancy gourmet shop… in the jam/pb section, my whole foods sells a local pumpkin butter, McCutchins, I think its called…and they started selling a couple other things up from on top of the salad bar area… all stores vary though. TJ’s is your best bet. I stock up on theirs!!

Heavens no I don’t workout in the pants!! I mentioned that I have shorts on underneath.

    Sara,
I recommend searing it in some olive oil for ONLY 2 minutes per side. The worst thing you can do is overcook salmon! MyRecipes.com will have a bunch of good specific ones.
