Snakes + Squiggles

Can’t talk long – gotta get back to work!! I went for a lovely walk this morning – about an hour – while talking to my mom. I came across a slitherin’ tiny snake! He must be on his way to the Harry Potter opening.

Home, showered, worked, I broke for a noontime lunch. I actually made today’s lunch and tomorrow’s lunch (which had to be packed) so it took me a while.

Today’s was an alternative salad –

Lefotver BBQ cabbage, steamed green beans + broccoli drizzled in honey mustard, carrot and jalapenos topped with a poached egg and a Whole Grain Goodness bun

IMG_9073 (1024x768)

I microwave poached the egg for 70 seconds at power level 5 and let it continue cooking on the counter

IMG_9076 (1024x768)

And I smothered the bun with Laughing Cow and this amazing raspberry jam from Fortnum and Mason. I LOVE jams with seeds in them, so this was totally my cup of tea.

Lastly I had a cup of the most delicious ripe cherries, but by the time I got to them I was full from all the veggies, so I am saving them for later –

Turns out I won the Blogger’s Choice awards!! Not sure how much competition there was or if this even means anything, but I guess it’s still pretty cool! Thanks for your votes!!

Squiggle Questions

To answer> your questions from this morning’s post:

-No, I am not counting calories again. I haven’t counted in over a year (except for the occasional tally-up estimate).

-Getting “back to weight loss” just means eating a little less during the boring times to make the valleys greater than the peaks – less snacks, desserts, smaller portions. Think small tweaks – not deprivation, clearly.

-I never weight myself anymore and just go by how I look and feel in my clothes. I think I am better off not knowing the number on the scale and don’t even care to look when I go to the doctor’s office.

-The vertical axis numbers are just my way of getting the peaks in Excel 🙂 They don’t really mean anything other than the relativity to each other, although you could pretend they are the calories overeaten if you’d like (which is kind of what I estimated when I tried to think of a scale to use)

Hope that helps!

Off to do work. My schedule changed and I’m going to be in the office all day tomorrow instead of today. Fun to enjoy this sunshine!

Those cherries look amazing – that is definitely going to have to be the next summer produce item I pick up 🙂

Your squiggly line effect idea is so great – there are weeks when I feel bloated and blah and weeks when I feel lean. I guess it all works out in the end! I LOVE raspberry jam. If I can find some local raspberries soon, I might make my own!

Great attitude about weight loss! It can get depressing/obsessive counting calories, and we lose track of what truly matters.

I too am trying to lose a little weight in the same way you are – not counting, but cutting back a little here and there. And going by how your clothes fit – yeah yuh!! The only scale I own is back at home (I’m at school) and I rarely even weight myself on that one!

    Congrats on the award!!

I’m starting to get into the ditch-the-scale-mentality too… I am more interested in my body fat percentage since that shows that I have been gaining muscle through my workouts, which makes me feel accomplished! (If only you didn’t need to know your weight in order to calculate your body fat percentage….)

    Hi Kath!

    CONGRATULATIONS!

I am interested in trying out your squiggly line approach. For years, I have been sticking to a set number of calories. And, I find that I won’t eat something b/c I don’t want to go over that number or I will eat something so that I hit the number. I find that my approach is leaving me totally out of tune with my body. I eat to meet this requirement I have set rather than for health, nutrition, to meet my bodies needs, and for enjoyment. Do you have any tips for getting started on the squiggly line approach. Perhaps this would be a good challenge for me to start.

    Re. Egg Poaching,
It’s just as simple as I said in the post. Find a small ramekin and spray it with cooking spray. Plop in egg. Nuke on power level 5 for about 70 seconds (this will vary depending on your microwave, so watch it and figure out what works for you). I take mine out when there’s still a little white liquid in the middle because it will continue to cook and i like them slightly running.

    Karly ,
There aren’t any secrets or tricks – just do it! Listen to your body and eat mindfully. You might want to read Intuitive Eating.
