Sizzle

As I was working this morning I heard a sizzling sound like steam escaping. I quickly got up and ran through the house until I found out what it was – our carpet cleaner can had spung a leak! There was foam escaping, and escaping fast. I picked up the whole cleaning supplies kit and took it outside with my eyes nearly closed in case it exploded. It created quite a foamy mess in the yard. I feel bad for polluting the grass 🙁 I have no idea how a heavy metal can springs a leak, but I’m glad it wasn’t a pipe in the house! And I’m glad someone was home when it happened or we’d have a mess to clean up.

3 –> 5

It’s also sizzling hot out there – and I went running around 11. I LOVE running in the summertime. It’s a bit unbearable in August with the heat + humidity, but in June it’s perfect. Hot, sweaty, sunny. Today we had a nice breeze too. I set out to do a quick 3 miles, which turned into about 5.5. I went in a new neighborhood and was so curious about the houses and layout I just kept running. Oops 😳 When I got home I took an icy shower, which felt amazing.

I had 2 strawberries and a few almonds before my run.

Almuerzo

I decided I needed to use up some leftovers for lunch today so I had at it with ’em, starting with a BBQ Tofu Sandwich . So yummy, but the flavors got a little lost in the bun. I almost liked it more plain. Or I just needed more sauce 🙂

With the samble, I made a mish-mosh salad :

  • Arugula dressed with balsamic vinegar
  • Sliced carrot
  • 1/4 cup roasted garbanzo beans from OhNuts.com
  • Goat cheese
  • Last of the cottage cheese
  • Some fresh strawberries the husband brought with the bananas

I think this is my third arugula salad and we still have some left!!

Up close of the roasted garbanzos . I thought they were pretty good on the salad. Kind of like soy nuts, if you’ve had those. But not as toasted.

And for dessert, I toasted one of my Oat Scones in the oven for 15 minutes. I really hit the target with this recipe! Perfect texture even a few days old.

With seltzer

Stay cool 8)

Travel question (for anyone to answer!)

I am going to Costa Rica for a month with my husband–with no real agenda but to relax, go somewhat “native”, learn spanish, and travel on the cheap.

Any suggestions on places to see? Food to eat? I’d love to hear rants from anyone on their trip to Costa Rica.

We’re very low maintainance travelers and like to try new things–so don’t shy away from “rugged” suggestions.

Thanks and have a beautiful day.

i love roasted garbonzo beans. they are super easy to make- just ope na can, season them as you wish and bake them for about an hour at 400 degrees. if they are small, check on them around 20 minutes in.

Does anyone know of a brand of whole wheat hot dog or hamburger buns that don’t have HFCS or artificial sweeteners? It frustrates the bejeebers out of me that EVERY hotdog or hamburger bun I find has this in it.

Since there was some talk about artificial sweetener this morning – I have a question: where does EQUAL fit into all of this? Is it worse than splenda? I prefer the taste of EQUAL over splenda, but if it’s really like putting toxic stuff in my system I might reconsider. THanks!

    Rachel K,

First of all-sooo jealous that you are going to Costa Rica for a month! I went for 2 weeks and it wasn’t nearly enough time!
I’m assuming you’ll be flying into San Jose-spend as little time there as possible. It is neat to see the Gold Museum in the city, but beyond that the city is dirty and the countryside is about a million times better. When I was there the first place we went was “La Fortuna” because that’s where the third most active volcano in the world is. If you go at a night time hike you can actually see the volcano erupting (you’re quite a ways away but it’s incredible to see). There’s also a beautiful waterfall in Fortuna that is about a 12 km hike each way-but totally worth it! You can swim at the bottom and there’s all these small fish that swim around you. The water is really cold which feels great in the hot weather.
After Fortuna you should go to Monteverde-and do the canopy lines! I can’t remember the name of the one we did-but it’s breathtaking and will get your heart rate up (especially if you’re like me and afraid of heights).
We went to the Pacific side of the country-and did Tamarindo (beautiful place to learn to surf but the most expensive place in Costa Rica. It’s been fixed up so it’s more like an American resort then how the rest of the country is, but it’s beautiful beautiful water). A must see is Montezuma-it was my favourite! It’s a little hippy town that’s really hard to get to but amazing once you’re there. Do a day trip if you go-for $35(American dollars) you take a boat trip to an island (which on the way we saw whales), go snorkeling, get a fresh fish lunch (that they actually catch while you’re snorkeling) and get to be on this beautiful sunny, white sand beach for the day before the boat takes you back at the end.
There’s a few other places as well-feel free to email me for more tips ([email protected]) but the biggest tip I can give you is buy the Lonely Planet book. We bought that and got all of our suggestions from it. We stayed in hostels but had private rooms and the most we spent on a room was $12/person (which is how you pay for those rooms). Have so much fun-it’s a beautiful beautiful country!

Ah… the cold shower after the run. I do that too.

I have to go running at 5 AM starting in June though, because the day time temps start getting too warm. At least it’s a dry heat here in Vegas, because the humidity would knock me out.

rachel k: if you’re looking for a truly amazing experience (and don’t mind doing something a little crunchy), go to corcovado! it’s a preserve on the west coast and home to lots of incredible animals including tapirs. the only way to get there is either a 6-hr or so trek or by private airplane, but it is SOOO worth it. when i was there we met with a scientist who is studying tapirs who live in the preserve and we tracked one – coming within two feet of a young male. obviously if you aren’t into wildlife or the outdoors, not quite the trip for you, but there are lots of amazing towns that are less touristy nearby that have a lot of other outdoorsy activities. enjoy!

Oh, and Kath, I do have a question for you. I love taste of banana oats, but I really hate the stringy fibers that come out of the middles and from the sides of the banana that don’t dissolve. Really picky and silly, I know, but they kinda remind me of hair and gross me out. How do you avoid them? Thanks!

the cold shower after run: I love to put on my swimsuit really quick and squirt of with the hose…sometimes even showering…and shaving my legs! Its amazing, as long as you have a private back yard as no one should be watching you shave! 🙂 Try IT!!! especially great if you have one of those attachments on your hose. I think i might be 12 at heart.

I’ve heard that if you peel a banana from bottom, the stringy parts will stay with the peel. I’ve never tried it, but it’s worth a shot.

Looks like I have to go to the store :(. This is the second week in a row that they’ve shorted me my bananas. Take if off your order form if you don’t have it!!!! They’re yummy baby bananas too…

I’m going to bake that scone tonight!! It looks SO good!! You made me crave it:P

I like to mash my tofu with my mustard (it has whole mustard seeds, figs and dates in it:) + cheese and spread it on pita or tortilla for a refreshing veggie wrap. Does baked tofu stay firm enough to eat as a sandwich? I’m scared that it will crumble all over! Your lunch looks delicious:)

Kath– Have you thought about running a 10K since you can pretty easily (it seems) run 5.5 miles? A 10K, as I am sure you know, is 6.2. Just a suggestion if you want to spice up your routine and set a new fitness goal! Since you like running just wondering if you have ever done a race? I hate running but made myself do a 5K once which gave me a great feeling of accomplishment. Anyone else run races? My next goal is triathlon!

Oh I just am learning how to swim! Never did swim team as a child or anything. Find someone to teach you. Luckily I work at my university’s rec center and one of my colleagues is a triathlete and competitive swim coach! So she is teaching me. Health centers usually offer adult swim classes. I started a year before I plan on doing it so I think I will be ready. I encourage you to try it!! I could never do marathons, running and me don’t get along too well. In a sprint tri its just a 5k, that’s all I can handle!

    Kelly L.,
I second Food for Life. Their’s are the only ones I have found.

    mandy ,
As far as I know, both Equal and Splenda are save to be consumed by humans. But both are artificially made, which is the drawback to some.

    Carrie H,
I HATE those strings too!! I usually just peel them off by hand. I maybe have 1-2 per banana so it’s not a big deal. I’ll have to try that reverse peel thing though.

    Chelsea ,
Wish I could ship you one overnight 🙁

    Yoon ,
Mashed tofu!! Sounds great. Kind of like what I did with the sardines 🙂 The baked tofu was firm enough for a sandwich. It was like eating a portabello mushroom sandwich.

    Allison ,
Unfortunately, I think the best way to find them it to search for muesli in the yellow search bar. I have them tagged, but I’m not sure why they’re not in the tag cloud.

    KatieTX ,
I’d love to do more races – 5K’s even – plus a 10K but I hate that you have to PAY for them. The husband and I have considered doing a few of the holiday 5K’s but it would be close to $50 for the two of us and I’d rather just go running outdoors for free!! But it would be fun to do one. I have avoided more than 5K’s because of my foot surgery history, but it’s probably OK to up my mileage a bit. We shall see!

I have to comment on this. I think that it is sad that you don’t want to run a 5k or 10k because you have to pay for them. They all benefit a charity or a non-profit organization. I love to run but I have my races that I love to do during the year and yes they cost money but I know that the money is going towards a good thing.

I didn’t say I refuse to do races because they cost, but that’s why I don’t do more of them. I didn’t realize the money went to charity. Most of the ones I’ve seen in our neighborhood did not have a charity behind them.
