Second + Third Favorite Foods

(You know what #1 is

 this !
)

Yet another late summertime lunch for me 8)

All the time I say “I’m going to just have kashi crackers and greek yogurt” for lunch, but when lunch rolls around I am always more in the mood for vegetables, salads, and more “meal” like things. But today I was still in the mood for them so that’s what I had 🙂

But I did start with leftover bean salad from yesterday. Still great the next day! Can I just say that I really, really love kale cooked in all forms!

You know who –

DSC02592

Plus Chobani with ryeberries and Kashi Honey Sunshine. Ryeberries taste just like wheatberries and speltberriers. I like Honey Sunshine, but not as much as H2H so I will probably stick with that in the future. And as for the Chobani – it’s fantastic. But no better or worse than Fage or TJ’s Greek. But for 2/3 the price of Fage it’s a winner. (But TJ’s has them all beat).

I am getting my haircut this afternoon too. Not sure if just a trim or more of a style. I always want to experiment with more flirty and trendy styles, but my hair is so straight that they all look dumb if I don’t take the time to blow-dry and shape them, so I usually end up with more of a sleek look. We shall see what this new stylist thinks. One thing’s for sure – whoever cut my hair last time did a horrible job on the part and so I always have long pieces on the wrong side. I’ll be happy to have that fixed!

Off to do more projects!

Hasta luego 🙂

I’ve been reading your blog for a while now and I have to say that it’s dramatically increased the about of oatmeal that I both eat and crave – even in the summer heat! And now I’m eager to try kale, which I’ve never actually cooked for myself although I’ve loved it in restaurants.

Can’t wait to see the haircut pics!

Hi Kath- Have you ever tried TJ’s European style yogurt? It’s thicker than the regular stuff…probably not as much as the Greek style (never tried it) but you get twice as much for the price…and it’s delicious! I’ll eat the plain kind with a packet of splenda and a drop of vanilla extract. Yum…so good!

I have stick straight hair as well. A good stylist should know how to give your hair shape and body while dealing with the straightness. I had long hair for years, because I couldn’t ever make it do anything. Now I have a chin length a-line bob, and I love it. All I have to do is blow dry with a brush, and it has shape and volume. Just talk to your stylist first…..and don’t be afraid to tell them how you like to part your hair and ask them to make sure it’s even.
Sorry….my parents owned hair salons when I was little..I tend to get on tangents.

I’m now obsessed with your blog. I’m trying to lose 10 pounds. I’m not overweight, but also not at my happy weight and am having a hard time losing it. Thanks for the inspiration (and distraction at work!).

Hi Kath! Quick question ~ I think I remember you mentioning you needed to get more iron in your diet at some point. I’ve been feeling very tired the past few months, with a lot of random aches and pains that pass within a few minutes and flare up during exercise. After some Googling I’ve been wondering if it’s connected to iron and protein deficiencies because I rarely eat meat, except for salmon and chicken a couple times a week. I had a blood test a few years ago (as a teenager) and they said I had low iron, but not anemic, but I don’t remember getting any suggestions or details about it at all!

I thought I’d read kale and dark greens had iron, but after checking some labels I realized it’s not nearly as much as I thought! Any ideas of iron-rich foods (besides… liver. ew.)? Have any of you guys dealt with an iron deficiency? Thanks!

Also, totally random: my kittens LOVE Kashi Heart to Heart! Every time I have a bowl they both gather around me and beg just like dogs. The boy kitten, Poe, even creeps up and closes his eyes like he’s sleeping, then tries to ninja swipe his paw in my bowl lol.

Jessica – my cats love it too! It looks similar to their food, and I thought they were just after the milk, but they don’t go after my boyfriend’s GOLean Crunch. Weird.

Jessica – my best friend was diagnosed as anemic last year. But now she’s very conscious of getting her daily iron (and making sure the rest of us get enough too!). Here’s a website that lists lots of iron-rich foods, along with iron/portion stats. Hope it helps!

Jessica check out my blog I just did a thing on iron yesterday… I would def recomend a supplement b/c if you do not eat meat and you are an athelete it is very hard to get the iron you need from your diet!

It’s so funny that you complain about straight hair; I have wavy (not even curly) hair and I’d give anything for it to be stick straight. I have a major obsession with the “new Elliot” haircut from Scrubs but it just won’t work on me. The grass is always greener it seems!

I feel ya on the hair. Mine is thick, stick-straight and heavy! I also cut mine myself because every stylist I go to doesn’t want to do anything fun or funky with the cut so they just end up trimming it. I usually get sick of it and every couple of months grab some scissors and just chop away as my boyfriend is banging on the bathroom door trying to get me to stop! In fact I feel the urge coming on now….. going to find some scissors….

Allison K – I love them all (I have Scrubs non-gender specific crushes and can’t decide whom I would rather cheat on my husband more with, Zach Braff or Sarah Chalke!) but the one I really want is the short bob-ish one with bangs that she gets during the season when she starts becoming more confident.

Ange C.- I do not live in Breckenridge, but do live in Boulder, CO and spend every weekend in Breck skiing. The following are my suggestions (not necessarily healthy, but that is what vacations are for…):
    1. The Whale’s Tail- great seafood!
    2. Breckenridge Brewery- great bar food and beer
    3. La Francaise French Bakery- kind of hidden in a strip mall along main street**** My suggestion- find it immediately… Unbelieveable pastries
    4. The Crepe cart- stroll over to this cart on main street after dinner for a crepe dessert
    5. Cafe Alpine- great for tapas
    6. The Dredge- The food is a little overpriced for what you get (I think that the whale’s tale is better) but the atmosphere is really neat.
*** Also, Keystone Resort is really close by (15-20 minute drive) with more great dining options!
Have fun!!!!! Remember to bring a jacket- it is already getting cold here at night.

Kath and others who love kashi crackers, I tried something new you all might like: Kangaroo brand Pita chips. I believe we tried a garlic flavored chip; they are whole wheat/grain and have just a few basic, natural ingredients. They are so crispy and tasty it’s hard to believe they are good for you! I highly recommend them; they are especially good with guacamole or some of the low fat spreadable cheeses

    Fleur ,
Awesome!! Kale is my favorite green by far 🙂

    sunsparklejl ,
Shoot me an email – I have one I can forward to you with lots of restaurant recommendations.

    Welcome Lindsey Beth! Good luck!

    Jessica ,
Heme iron from meat is the easiest for us to absorb and its plentiful in meat. Since you say you eat very little meat, you might not be getting enough. Do you take a multivitamin? There are also ways to increase the bioavailability of non-heme iron with food combining such as vitamin C and citrus. I’d keep a food dairy and perhaps see your doctor or a dietitian to see how much you are getting and ways to make absorption more efficient for you.

    melissa sue,
CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Send me some photos of your ring and the happy finance!!

    goalie30 ,
Oooo! I’ll look for those. I love the crunch of pita chips.

    Tara ,
    Thanks for sharing!
