Savory, Crunchy, Sweet

I know I say this every Monday, but boy was Body Pump hard!! Chris is the Monday teacher and like I’ve said before, his class is now called “Pump Challenge” because it goes above and beyond the BP norm. We do long holds, TEN clean-n-presses in a row, extra mini sets on the end of songs.

This I can say: I would never, ever, ever, ever challenge myself like that on my own, so the push is good!

For lunch I prepared a pile ‘O kale topped with some Queen Bee Raw Honey. Nothing takes away the stink of kale like honey! I massaged a little olive oil, honey and lavender salt into the kale to “cook” it down a bit. The raw honey was fab – gave it an over-and-beyond honey taste.

Once I was showered and transported to the bakery, I doctored up my salad with tofu, cucs, tomato, lemony hummus, green peppers and olives.

IMG_4000 (640x427)IMG_3998 (427x640)

On the side: a trio of breads! I couldn’t decide which to have as a slice: savory, crunchy, sweet, so I had a mini slice of each

IMG_4001 (640x427)IMG_3997 (427x640)

IMG_3996 (427x640)

We all dug into the peanut butter cookies after lunch –

IMG_4003 (427x640)

And it’s going to be hard to stay away from the 10 pans of Cville Cluster Granola this afternoon!

Must plan it in for a snack.

Have a marvelous Monday afternoon!

That does sound like an intense workout. We do 24 clean & presses for the new release, so I am sure 10 in a row would be killer! It feels oh SO good to lift, eh??

I love huge salads with yummy bread, so your lunch looks really REALLY inviting! And yeah, good luck staying away from those pans….. 😉

I’ve never heard of massaging olive oil and honey into kale…maybe that would help me be able to eat it!!!

I’m jealous that you have a gym so close to take classes at! I’m the same way, definitely won’t push myself as hard as I would in a class or with a trainer!

Good for you re the workouts. That and your lovely meals keep you looking good.

I, too, try to work out and follow nutritional information but it is getting harder. I wonder if there is a conspiracy by the food manufacturers. Sort of kidding, but sort of not, and here’s why:

I use Hershey’s cocoa (natural unsweetened) because it has low fat and few calories. I keep records of the nutritional information. Today I noticed that the latest container has changed the calories from 20 per serving to 10, and the fiber from 1 g to 2 g. Sounds better, right? Same product, so how can this be?

Their explanation was that the company had changed the calculation method they used (from 449 to atwater). This sounds plausible, but since it makes the product seem better for those of us who are tryng to take care, is it really a more accurate calculation or is it spin? As an RD, what is your opinion of this change?

Hmmm. That’s very odd. I’m not sure how they can change the nutrients per serving unless they changed out they ROUND the calories and fiber? I’m really not sure what “from 449 to atwater” is?

If you fancy one very technical and scientific read, this link http://www.fao.org/DOCREP/006/Y5022E/y5022e04.htm gives the skinny on the different methods of food to energy conversion. One of these methods is Atwater. Not sure what 449 is. In any case, small differences in caloric values are only to be expected: I doubt that one cookie will be identical to the same one but from a different batch. Plus, many servings actually contain more than indicated on the package, e.g. it says a bagel is 80 g but it’s likely to be over that (because manufacturers are fined is their food is “underweight”).
I think, the best solution is to keep in mind the approximate nutritional value of foods but not get too bogged down by tiny variations. Personally, I just use any 100% unsweetened cocoa, which is probably pretty much the same across the line.

Kath, There is an explanation here: http://www.nutribase.com/449.shtml

Apparently there are several ways that the nutritional content of foods can be calculated; 449 is one method and atwater is one of the others.

Note that the numbers are not rounded. The calories are now HALF what they were, and the fiber is now TWICE what it was. Since those results are more in keeping with current nutritional advice, I am having a hard time believing that the reason for the change in method of calculation was benign.

Thanks again for your time with this. You are helping a lot of people.

OLENA, thanks for this. I agree, small variations are not that important—this is not small, however. It is one tablespoon of the same product with no changes in ingredients, it is not a cookie, which could vary in size and contents from one to another in the same batch. Yes, 100% unsweetene cocoa should be pretty much the same, so why is THE SAME cocoa product now half of the calories and twice the fiber? Again, I am suspicious of the reason for the change in methodology. 449 is one of the different methods; see web site listed above. We are all trying to understand more about what we are eating, and the food manufacturers are not making it easy.

      Stacey,

This is not tried and true, but possibly you can experiment with your own recipes from what you already know. Maybe you can look for Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free Baking Mix and a package of Reese’s Peanut Butter Morsels and write down their recipe suggestions for cookies (substituting where necessary) to see what you come up with. Actually, you might come up with something delicious while meeting your GF needs. Good Luck!
