You are here: Home / Weekend / Old Wood.

Old Wood.

IMG_0494 (400x600)

Mom and I went up to Daniel Boone Antique Mall after breakfast to dig around and hunt for some new house items. She likes to find old toys and tins, and I was looking for wooden boxes. I just love the look of old wood in a modern house.

IMG_0493 (600x400)

You really have to dig and keep your eyes wide open to find good stuff!

IMG_0496 (400x600)

I was actually shocked to find how high the prices were for some of it. Old boxes in the $200-300 range!! I guess because it’s vintage, but I just don’t think I could ever swallow that much money.

IMG_0498 (600x400)

These cute vintage peanut butter tins were $45 a piece!! It does make me appreciate even more the items my grandmother has passed down to me. I’m sure it’s all more valuable than I realize.

IMG_0500 (600x400)

I also loved the galvanized tins. The one on the right was an olive press.

IMG_0497 (600x400)

I left with two boxes – both were under $30.

IMG_0504 (400x600)

This one was for “Breakfast Cocoa” – hot chocolate with breakfast!? Will be cute for holding linens n things.

IMG_0506 (600x400)

My second one is an old milk crate that will be perfect to hold some of Matt’s specialty beers!

IMG_0505 (400x600)

When we returned, we walked downtown for lunch with my Dad

IMG_0508 (400x600)

We went to Gulf Rim, formerly the Flying Fish and for years the best bagel shop ever, Lu-e-g’s. And before that, The James Pharmacy. It’s been through a number of names in the 28 years I’ve lived in Hillsborough.

IMG_0512 (400x600)

I ordered an awesome crabcake salad!! All the food here has been so good. The size of this crabcake was perfect!

IMG_0510 (600x400)

We walked home and opened this little bag of chocolate cookie from Miette – a bakery in the Ferry Building that was in my goodie bag at Foodbuzz.

IMG_0513 (600x400)

Boy were these good! Crunchy and chocolately like a chocolate chip cookie.

IMG_0516 (600x400)

I’m about to hit the road. Thankfully the drive from Hillsborough to Cville is one scenic route!

I think it’s fun if you zero in on a few things you like to collect (which can change over time.) I started out with old bottles. I’ve been on lots of kicks from buttons to old Christmas stuff. It makes the hunt even more exciting, like trying to help Kath find boxes today. I have a few old rabbits (toy ones!) and saw a sweet old guy today. Might go back and rescue him, although I’m not sure I need that many rabbits!

I think if you attach the name “antique” to anything, it instantly drives the price up by 500%. Kind of like the difference between saying a wedding reception and a general party.

    Curious, non-food related question…….

I’ve noticed that you already have a few old wooden boxes and you’re now adding three more to your home/collection. I like that you actually USE them, as opposed to them just “sittin’ pretty” and simply taking up valuable space.

The question……what do you do about the musty/moldy smelling odor (or any other) that exists in these things? We adore old things, but I’m always so cautious about that odor since I know that mold can actually be deep down in the wood and we have several in our home who are allergic to mold. It’s a bit insane the types of solutions we will use on an old item in an effort to remove that smell. Sometimes we’re successful, sometimes we’re not.

I’m eager to know what someone else (who appears to be quite neat and clean without going over board) does about this…..

Hnmmm….I actually haven’t noticed a smell or seen any signs of mold in any of my boxes. I would definitely be concerned if I did and would probably use some kind of sanitize to try to ameliorate it

I adore antique shopping, and old wooden crates, whilst living in Cali, we got several cool ones from wineries/old canning companies, and they make delightful dvd holders in the living room. THe milk crate for specialty beers is a fantastic idea. I’ve seen a lot of those milk crates, always loved them, but didn’t know what to use them for??…maybe also to hold scrapbooking supplies?
