Oink Oink

Howdy folks! We had a half day today – how exciting 🙂

I took advantage of the extra time to get the SWINE FLU put into my arm 🙁 Since I’ll be working at a hospital and since it was free at the Winthrop Health Center, I turned my car around and went back for a vaccination. I. Hate.Shots.

It hurt, but not too bad 😥

IMG_0021 (640x480) (3)

We attended a three hour crash course on critical care this morning. ‘Twas very informative! I actually think I’m going to really love clinical nutrition. I used to think I’d hate not working with the FOOD part of the field, but I really love science and the human body and all the math and problem solving that comes with clinical nutrition. It’s very Type A, and so am I

 this !
I start my clinical rotation in April, so I’ve got a while to go before I get there.

Lunch was provided for us before we broke into small groups and then headed out.

We had a European spread of salad, fruit + cheese, crackers, nuts, and dried fruits

IMG_0014 (640x480) (2)

IMG_0015 (640x480) (3)

I piled a mish-mosh of things – salad with olives + olive oil drizzle, grapes, cheese, nuts, dried mango and a jam cookie. Yummy Gouda!!!

IMG_0017 (480x640)

And had seconds of salad!!!

I also tried a bite of one of those Kashi Raspberry Chocolate bars – blech! I used to love all of Kashi’s bars, but haven’t been impressed with them of late.

***

My favorite foods of 2009 on I Ate A Pie!

***

I am now home, sipping tea and trying to decide if I should eat something before Lauri and I embark on a bootcamp workout at a nearby school! I’m feeling a little empty, but also don’t want to be full for our sprints.

Matt and I are also sending off all of our Great Harvest paperwork today, so we should be getting things going for real in the next few weeks! First to-do: find a location.

I have been wondering your thoughts on the whole Swine Flu and vaccination debate. Since I very much admire the way you eat and your lifestyle, I have been curious as to whether or not you have been at all worried about the Swine Flu and what your thoughts were on its vaccination and vaccinations in general.

What a great looking spread! Those grapes are making my mouth water.

      Jessica,
I’m not really educated enough to have an opinion on it, but I asked the nurse who came to speak to us yesterday if I should have it and she said absolutely given my future work environment, and I trusted her opinion.

That is super exciting and actually something my husband and I have discussed doing before (well, not GH specifically, but a franchise in general). We got the idea because Matt is a baker at one. We’ve always toyed with the idea of opening up a “fun lunch place” but had no clue how we would fare or even where to begin. A few months after he started working for Great Harvest it hit us like a brick one day: bread!! We both LOVE bread and we loved the idea of a franchise because the company can help us as much or as little as we need. The more we researched GH, the more we knew it was perfect for us. We didn’t intend to do it this early, but we put in an application because Charleston (our location of choice back then) was rumored to be on the out in terms of availability and once we got the application process going we decided to just go for the gold! (Assuming we could fit the other puzzle pieces into place 🙂 )

Not to be a weirdo, but since I’m applying to UVA (as well as several other grad schools for my Ph.D.) it did occur to me UVA=KERF’s Great Harvest. Fundamentally, my decision will come down to the graduate program, not the quality of the baked-goods in the area, but with all things being equal…

Seriously, though, congratulations and that big hurdle!

    Hey Kath,
looove the blog!! I was wondering if you could give me some insight on a possible hamstring strain that I think I have. I have not been to the dr’s but when I stretch my left leg, the part of the muscle that meets the base of my butt hurts. I usually stretch atleast twice a day so Im thinking it may be from not warming up enough. It does not hurt while ellipticaling, just stretching. I recently cut out a ton of cardio due to too much weight loss and was focusing much more on ST to gain weight, especially lower body for muscle mass.
I know you have a very busy life, but was wondering what you think I should do? I know rest, but it’s so hard for me to do so – I’m a very active person and am used to doing activity everyday.
Thank you so much for your help, I really appreciate it!

That is the SAME place that I might have strained tonight! I really don’t know much about sports nutrition. You have to just go by how you feel. If it’s bothering you, you’re doing too much. Rest is mandatory 🙁

Weird! I dont know much about it either. It stinks because while im on the ET or doing ST it doesnt bother me at all…just after while im stretching so its hard to tell whether I should be doing these or not. Guess I’ll take a break for a couple days….it’s gonna be hard though!

I'm a Registered Dietitian, healthy eater, and mom of two from Charlottesville, Virginia. Here you’ll find a healthy mix of real-life meals made from whole ingredients balanced with the pleasures of life, including buttercream frosting and good wine. Plus a sprinkle of nutrition, home life, beauty, parenting, and travel.
