Numbers on the Brain

Bionomialpdf(n, p, k)….deck of cards….coin is flipped…..variance….standard deviation. What does this have to do with NUTRITION!?!?!?

I’ve got 2 hours to finish studying because then I’m off to class and then to a 5:00 early dinner at my mother in law’s before the husband has his class and I’m off to take my test uptown at the testing center (this stats class is online – it’s been fun but hard to teach myself!).

This morning I chose to have half an Iced Oatmeal Luna Bar before my workout and saved the other half for this afternoon when I need something small to tide me until our early, early dinner. I hadn’t had this flavor before, but I probably won’t buy it again. I like Luna Bars, but they don’t really do much for me. They’re gone too fast (I can take 20 minutes to eat a LaraBar in very small bites!) and never curb my hunger. I got hungry mid-workout this morning and wished I’d had toast instead. I think this all goes back to the “two types of stomachs in the world” – those that like carbs + fiber and those that prefer protein. While protein always helps to keep my satisfied, I really need carbs + fiber for complete satiety.

Workout was 45 minutes ET plus 15 upper body lifting. Nice and refreshing.

The husband is off at his second job interview for the job!! He looked hot leaving the house in a suit and tie 🙂 Since he was gone, I ate in front of the TV, but I made a point to savor every bite of my fabulous banana oatmeal.

What a perfect day to have a breakfast that I LOVE!! Happy Valentine’s Everyone!

I’m always trying to change up my mixtures, but a whole small banana, almond butter, walnuts, flax and brown sugar with coffee is my absolute favorite breakfast. I didn’t stir the brown sugar in because my spoon was “occupied” when I decided to add some and I rather liked having it on top melting in to get little sweet bites in-between no-so-sweet ones.

dsc06032.JPG

I always have a candle lit at meals – it makes for a better ambiance 🙂

dsc06030.JPG

This breakfast was 481 kcal (a little higher than normal b/c of brown sugar and extra banana), 10 g fiber, 19 g protein.

STUDY TIME!

XOXOXO

Luna bars don’t do much for me either…I like granola bars that have a mixture of protein, fat and carbs so I can get the whole “feel full package.” 🙂

Your breakfast looks so cozy and relaxing! I love the idea of having a candle lit. 🙂

That’s so funny, I am the opposite with the Luna/Lara bars. I LOOOOVVVEEE the Luna bars, especially the Lemon Zest and Smores flavors. I either eat them as a snack or have a little something else with them to make a meal. I don’t like the flavor and especially the texture of Lara bars. I wish I did, as they are very healthy.

    Happy V Day!

Christine, I’m sorry I didn’t see your comments about milk in additions to Goalie’s, so thank you as well. The chocolate milk site made me realize that my fear is ridiculous.

Would you mind sharing the brand make up and chapstick that you buy. I typically use neutrogena. Thanks! (I posted this late last night, but doubt you saw it so i’m just reposting 🙂 )

love luna bars too…i was trying to decide between a lara bar the pecan pie flavor or the usual luna nutz over chocolate bar for a snack this morning…tried a small piece of the larabar and thought it was gross! oh well, at least i just bought one. I ate the luna bar instead, which I love. I actually buy a case of the nutz over chocolate at whole foods every month or so 😛

Yay for your husband and the second interview! I’ve been thinking about him and wondering how his job search is going when I read about his first interview a week or so ago. Hopefully Valentine’s Day will bring him some good vibes.

    Kath,

Like you, I also prefer old fashioned rolled oats because they are creamy and have lots of volume! But sometimes, I mix pre-coked steel cut oats with old fashioned ones and the results are great! Creamy with volume but still have that chewy texture! Also, for a change I would add some Ovaltine cocoa to my oatmeal and love it! Give them a try 🙂

Good luck to both your husband and you!! Happy V-day!

About “two types of stomachs in the world”, did you read it somewhere or did you just come up with the wording? Do you know of a book that talks about it?? I am definately a carb+fiber person. Thanks!

    Hi Kath,

I just recently found your website and I’m already addicted! You are such an inspiration, cooking healthy with no processed foods! I hope one day I will get there too. For now, as long as I am within my calorie range, I am happy, even if that includes protein bars and frozen meals (sometimes).

Kath, I was looking over you faq and you said you pb has 180 calories per tbl. How many grams of fat- do you buy a low fat one, becuase the lowfat smuckers is 180 cals as well?

My pb (smuckers) has 210 for 2 tbl. Are certain natural pb lower in fat- how? (that’s for anyone)

I think kelly did delete her blog 🙁

    re: walnuts
I usually use a tablespoon or two if I use them on anything…I am not the biggest walnut fan although I love almonds/pistachios/cashews! I find walnuts to be too bland and I don’t like their texture compared to the others, I’ve also had a bad experience where I bit down on a salad that had walnuts mixed in and some of the shell was still on one of them, so I almost broke my tooth!

    re: luna bars
I don’t really care for them either, there’s not enough to them to keep me from getting hungry less than an hour later. I’ve pretty much tried almost every bar out there. I like the balance bars but I find them a little too sweet and high in saturated fat. The pria bars are good for a preworkout snack and only 110 calories. I found a new one though that I really like, they are may by Cliff bars but they are the children’s one! They have a peanut butter and a chocolate brownie flavor! I had the peanut butter this AM before my workout, and I was fine the whole workout and even after, I just didn’t get as hungry as usual. There’s only 1 gram of saturated fat, and 140 calories, and it’s a regular sized bar and very tasty. IT also has about 5 grams of protein and good levels of vitamins. You should all give them a try! I can’t wait to try the brownie before tomorrow A.M.’s run! 🙂

Happy valentine’s day to everyone out here xoxo

I also love the cliff Z bars! Such a good snack, especially when you are craving PB or chocolate. No HFCS, ingredients you can recognize and most importantly delicious! Pair it with some fruit for a good all around snack!

    Kay,
“Two types of stomachs” is something I came up with based on experience and observation about what makes other people full vs. me.

    Allison,
Usually about 10 grams, which is about 1 tbsp chopped and about 60 kcal.

    Susan,
I checked the HT peanut butter and it’s 15 grams of fat, 2.5 sat. fat, and 180 per 2 tbsp.

    Ellie,
Glad you like it! Thanks for reading 🙂
