Not-So-Free Refills

Up and at ’em at 5:15 this morning for a frigid bike ride to the Y. I had to break out the gloves! It’s not that cold out there, but pedaling fast it’s like a wind chill of -26*! I’m not sure how much longer we’ll be able to bike there. I was numb head to toe when I arrived from the wind. Guess I’ll have to break out the sweatpants soon too. Once there I did 30 minutes of Stairs and 10 of upper body weights before we headed home. So glad I was able to get up early this AM because I got home from lab early last night 🙂 It makes for a much happier Thursday.

I came home from the gym starving and couldn’t WAIT to dig into some oats.

Today’s blend was:

  • 1/3 cup oats, milk, water
  • Pinch salt, vanilla bean paste
  • 1/2 medium extra ripe banana
  • 1/4 cup cottage cheese
  • 2 tbsp-ish wheatberries
  • Granola plank
  • Butter Toffee PB x2

I think I am developing a real PB addiction because I jumped up half way through and got a refill on PB!! PB isn’t exactly a “free” refill!

The day after a test is always wonderful. I feel like I have all the time in the world!! And I’m dining at EarthFare for lunch, so that always makes the day more fun as well.

See you there!

Wind chill of minus 26!? Sheesh, I thought it was cold when it got all the way down to 67 last night.

And for some reason, this post is making me think of oatmeal… Hmmm….

Ugh! It’s getting so cold out in the morning. I totally do not enjoy walking the dogs at 5am any longer. Brrrr!

You got me hooked on bananas in my oatmeal now. I am back to my early morning workouts thanks to you and of course the 5am cat-alarm clock(Mookie). I wish it was a bit colder over here in Cali, although it does feel like fall.

I finally tried your banana-milk-oatmeal combo and I am obsessed!! Question about the PB – do you eat it first, or do you dip it into the oatmeal and swirl it in? (I know that’s a silly question, but I’m curious)

I think I would have to have a refill on that yummy PB too..even if it wasn’t exactly “free.”

    Enjoy your lunch!

    Cat,
Hello from class!! (Don’t worry it hasn’t started yet 🙂 )

I keep the PB on the spoon as long as possible. I NEVER swirl it in because then it gets lost in the mix! I get a little oatmeal on top of the PB and try to only eat the oatmeal with a tiny bit. I’ll be the first to admit it’s kind of a gross process, but it’s the best flavor-wise! Some people put the PB on the side of the bowl and dip in every now and then. I might have to try that soon too.

I’m going to have that post-test feeling today at about 3:30 and can’t wait!!! But there are always more tests around the corner…

If you want to get a little more out of your riding to the gym season, you might consider going to a sports store (do you have an REI or something like it?) and getting some wind proof gloves and a hat that will go under your helmet. After trying a few pairs of bike specific gloves, I finally got some that are intended as liners for skiing. They’re amazing and totally change the biking in the cold experience!

    Have an awesome day!

Oh man, I’m so ready for a frigid bike ride! It’s still in the 90’s here in TX 🙁

Congrats to your husband on the new job! That’s so exciting- and way to go on following his passion! Sounds like an amazing opportunity.

It has officially become winter in the UK today – it is sooooo cold! (ok its about 55 degrees today but at 6am this morning it was about 40… brrrrr!). I know what you mean about cycling in the cold – I cycle to work and at 6am in the morning in the winter it is unbelieveably cold (below freezing) – last year I used to cycle with jumper, gore-tex reflective jacket and my pollution mask and then a scarf wrapped all the way round my head so only my eyes weren’t covered (like a burqa!)!!!! hilarious.

Biking in the cold is awful! It’s not like running or walking where you warm up after going fast for a while. Instead, you just get colder from the added wind! Blech!

Chilly here today too, but I am LOVING it!

After I walked my dog, my oatmeal warmed me up though.

We may have to fire up our wood burning stove tonight!

PB is definitely not a free refill, but can be purchased with long/hard workouts and substitutions with other ingredients! (at least that’s what I tell myself)

another good way to eat peanut butter on oatmeal and not lose the full flavour is to swirl it on top, which can be done with runnier or melted peanut butter

It’s getting crazy cold here in Chicago too!! Although, I suppose that’s expected. Anyway, sometimes I have to remind myself to cool it with the PB too! haha

This is probably a silly question, but how do you eat the pb when you put in your oatmeal? Do you mix it in or keep it on the spoon or what? I tried some in my cream of wheat the other day and I mixed it in. It wasn’t horrible but I kept wishing I’d left the pb out, even though was really craving it a few minutes before.

Thanks for answering my question! That was actually how I had mine… not gross at all! It definitely helps stretch out the PB. 🙂

    Cyclist Kate,
Thanks for the gear advice. I don’t think I can afford them all, but perhaps I can find some stuff on sale.

    Micaela ,
    I answered this question above – #11.

cyclist kate – my cyclist boyfriend said the EXACT same thing to me last week when i went off to look for warmer biking gloves. my summer gloves are just not cutting it in the morning wind.
he definitely recommended xc skiing gloves, which are better and cheaper. so that’s what i got! they feel less hardcore than my real biking gloves, but i think my hands will stay warm and that’s what counts.
