Noises In The Attic

Morning guys. Man, did we sleep horribly last night. I stayed up until about 10 downstairs and the husband went up around 8:30 – but I kept hearing him get up and go back to bed. Finally he came down like a little kid and said he couldn’t sleep and wanted to see what I was doing. I went up to read in bed and then I couldn’t fall asleep. We both must have tossed and turned until at least 2am. (Remember he had to get up at 3:30?) And sometime during this whole event there was a HUGE crash in the attic and a scurrying!! I was terrified. But there’s no way you’re going to find me sticking my head up there today to see what’s up there. I came down this morning to find the machete we have from Mexico on the floor, so maybe that’s what the crash was? Or maybe the crash was so heavy it rattled the walls and made the machete fall!? Scary!

I started the day with yoga again. Today was a 20 minute Morning Flow from YogaDownload.com. This one was a little too much back bending (the focus) and not enough down dog and forward bending for me. But I did like the flow series. But they breathe too fast! She’s on exhale and I’m still inhaling.

After yoga I made oats. (Duh!)

Continuing my craving for walnuts this week, I did Banana Raisin Walnut.

  • 1/3 cup oats, 1% milk, water (plus a splash more water for the raisins), salt, 1 med. banana
  • 2 tbsp wheatberries
  • 1 mini box raisins
  • 1-2 tbsp walnut pieces
  • Spoonful Barney Butter

I didn’t really want coffee this morning, but I also don’t want a headache this afternoon…tough decisions.

I decided I am going to a different Y this morning. Our regular Y is the second largest in the country (!!) but it’s also really old and very dark and musty. There’s a newer modern one about 12 minutes away with huge windows. Even though the sky is pouring down rain, I need some natural light. I’m headed there after I finish digesting – sometime in the next hour.

I am hoping to go shopping today to Pier1 where I have a $50 gift card from Christmas!! You can bet I’ll be in the bowls + plates section 😉 Can’t wait to see what they have. We’ll see how my time and this weather pan out though. I might save it for another day.

I just came across your blog and love it. Your oatmeal always look so yummy that I decided to give one of your recipes a try. Delicious! Even my picky hubby loved it.

I was just wondering what made you decide to try yoga? I tried incorporating small daily yoga workouts into my day but always fail to stay consistent.

Bad night here too: I threw out my back on Sunday. Haven’t done that for three years. Ugh. No fun at all! But nothing a Mexican machete can’t fix.

Hi Kath, my name’s Jessie, just wanted to introduce myself, I’ve been a big fan of your blog for about 4 months now. I actually just started my own, I’ve been so inspired by all the wonderful blogs out there so I started a countdown to my wedding in 5 months. Can’t wait to see how it goes!

I did the morning back bend flow a couple of days ago. It was a bit much for 6 AM, but I love that it was only 20 minutes. I do always feel refreshed when I’m done. Great oats combo this morning, and I love going to different Y’s. Switching up workout locations helps motivate me.

I’ve been sleeping horribly too – probably because my cat is so happy we’re home from vacation that he does laps around the bed and screams all night. Yikes.

I hate creepy noises at night! Luckily I can just pretend it’s my neighbors in my complex or my cat and not be too scared then 🙂

Machetes?! Spooky attics?! Is this KERF or the setup for a horror movie?

    Good luck at Pier 1!

Out of curiousity, when you buy bowls/plates do you always buy a set or do you just buy the random cute piece here or there?

As for the noises in the attic, we had a raccoon family in our ceiling for a year! Not fun, so hope it was just a random visitor just getting out of the rain and not a new tenant!

Hi Kath! I have a book recommendation for you- Bread Alone. Not only is it a great “girly read”, but I think that it would be fun to share some of the info with the husband. The author was a baker who studied in Paris and there are amazing bread, scone, and cake recipes in the book as well as some in depth info about the chemistry of baking bread. I could not put it down!

So you heard a crash and then found a machete on the floor??? That probably sounds a lot scarier than it actually was… although we have some creepy attic noises and I will NOT go up there. Yikes.

OMG, that would scare the crap out of me! That happened to me once, when it was just me and Hannah – turned out squirrels had gotten in my attic!

Um, there was no way in HELL I was going to check that out myself so I called my local humane society – they pulled out FIVE squirrels. Then I patched the roof and all was well.

We had a strange noise in our attic right above our bedroom. It drove me crazy. We finally figured out that a branch from the tree out side had a branch that got long enough to drop over and rub on the roof. That was a huge relief, but I still didn’t sleep well until we borrowed a tree pruner and cut back the branch. The imagination is a little more vivid when you’re half asleep =)

Last year we had squirrels in our attic, that noise would drive me nuts! We’d hear them scurrying around and I would just wait for them to jump out of through the walls. Our landlord took care of it, but I guess that’s the fun in living in a historic house. 2 weeks ago we had a BIRD in the house. A gigantic bird! No idea how it got in. Hopefully you won’t hear anything else for a while!

    hey kath –
my parents once had a flying squirrel in their attic — i guess it jumped from the overhanging branches and chewed its way in.

how was the oats combo? you kept saying you were excited to try it w/walnuts — but left us guessing!

    Sorry about the terrible sleep!

So, I am thinking about joining the Y where I just moved (from R.I. to N.J.). What do you think of it in terms of equipment, staff, classes, etc. I know they are all different, but just your general feeling. Do you feel like you are missing out by not belonging to a more modern gym? Do you feel like you get any benefits by belonging to a Y?

    Chelsie ,
I’ve been on and off the yoga wagon for years now, but when I finished my exams, and with the discovery of YogaDownload.com, I decided to give it another try. I LOVE the audio yoga. I’m sure when I start my classes I will cut back on days per week, but hope I’ve created enough of a habit to keep it up on Tues/Thurs.

    Thanks Graze With Me!

    Mara ,
    Haha – great idea!

    Sarah (lovINmytummy),
I almost always buy bowls in sets of two – so the husband and I can match 🙂 But I usually get plates and platters and tiny bowls one at a time. Not sure why!

    Melissa ,
I think I’ve heard of that book! I’ll put it on my list 🙂

    pam ,
They should great, but we don’t have a waffle iron 🙁

    Jenny ,
I’d say about a week – but I’ve never had it go bad on me.

    smilesara ,
Oh the walnuts were great. I actually went back to walnuts – I used to have them every morning.

    HangryPants ,
They are all totally different…. Our Y is better than many of the “modern” gyms here in Charlotte, so no, I don’t feel like I am missing out.
