New Favorite!

Wow, I have a new favorite restaurant!! Press was awesome. It’s a sister restaurant to Sonoma Modern Kitchen , so it’s no wonder! The salad bar was just like Dean & Deluca and the atmosphere was so cool! Thanks to Maran for the recommendation.

I got a medium salad filled with all kinds of goodies. I think I annoyed the salad bar lady because I kept asking for more things! Here’s all that was on it (I think!)

  • Spinach/mixed greens
  • Garbanzo beans
  • Cucs
  • Artichokes
  • Roasted red peppers
  • Broccoli
  • Mushrooms
  • Radishes
  • Asparagus
  • Sprouts
  • Kalamata olives
  • Mandarin oranges
  • Raisins
  • Goat cheese (!!)
  • Berry dressing

I saw that they had smoked salmon at the last minute, but it was extra and we’d already paid so I had to pass. But next time…..

I love root beer and decided to have a diet one on a hot day – I found out after I drank it that it had 35 calories of high fructose corn syrup in it! My fault for not checking the label.

I wanted to get a photo of the ambiance but felt weird shooting other people with my camera, so the husband just took a photo of me. Hope you can see behind me. There are wine bottles all over the place because it’s also a wine bar! (We’ll be back 🙂 )

I did get a ceiling shot –

After riding the lightrail home, I went to EarthFare for oats and groceries. I couldn’t take a photo because it was so hot everything had to be put away ASAP. But here’s what I got:

  • Raspberries
  • 4 Peaches
  • 2 plums
  • Cantaloupe
  • 7 Bananas
  • 2 apples
  • BIG bag of thick rolled oats
  • Small bag of rolled oats
  • Wheatberries
  • Celery
  • Grape tomatoes
  • Container baby spinach
  • 1 zucchini + 1 squash
  • Handful mushrooms
  • 2 yukon gold potatoes
  • Red bell pepper
  • Bag broccoli stir-fry mix
  • 5 Cascadian Farm single yogurts (for next week’s lunch)
  • 2 Fages
  • 2 hemp milks
  • 2 frozen ravioli packages
  • Applegate Herbed Turkey
  • Ezekiel english muffins

To round out my smallish lunch, I had 2 cheese cubes and a vegan chocolate chip cookie to sample!! I love that EarthFare has WHOLE cookies to sample. He was about the size of an oreo. SO GOOD too!

Gosh, I gotta start thinking about dinner already! Grrr!

I have a question about washing dishes. I eat breakfast at home, pack a lunch, and cook almost every night for my husband and I. And I feel like all I ever do is wash dishes!! And I’m not talking about washing by hand…I use my dishwasher for almost everything. But cooking creates sooo many dirty dishes, that I can barely keep up. Does anyone else have this problem? I have to run the dishwasher at least once every night just to keep up. Is this normal?

I don’t mean for this to come across the wrong way, but I think you’ll be okay with the 35 cals and hfcs. Live a little-it won’t kill ya!

Crazy jam-packed salad. Those are the best, when they’re chopped and pre-mixed, the sort of thing you wouldn’t really make at home because it has too many ingredients. Plus I never bother chopping or tossing my salad but it is somehow better that way.

YAY!! I’m glad you liked it! Now you know where I work because I’m the HUGE building right next door with the park connected to it (the one with the crazy sculpture that is multi colored). I have never seen a berry dressing so that must be new!
That was quite a shopping trip for EarthFare. Were they having specials on produce or were you just making it a one stop grocery day? I ask because I feel like I would go broke shopping like that there. So the Teeter it is for me =(

I went to Earthfare today also! Your muesli posts have inspired me (I actually didn’t know what it was and had to do some research) and I got the following to experiment:

    thick rolled oats
    rye flakes
    barley flakes
    walnuts
    brazil nuts
    dried cranberries
    dried apple rings

    I can’t wait!

One more thing about the scones (I posted earlier about them Kath), I used WW flour and they still turned out wonderful.. and used dried cranberries instead of currants- I remember you said you might try WW flour next time, so I say go for it!

I’d like to take a poll (if Kath doesn’t mind).

1.When watching what you eat carefully, either counting calories or eating under maintenance, or even just being very aware of food intake, have any of you experienced a drop in sexual desire? My sex drive has pretty much bottomed out.

2 (this is an old topic, but I wanted to hear it again)
Approx how much $ do people spend a week on groceries? The amount and then for how many people.
    thanks!!!!!!

also….re:dishes. I hear ya. I do NOT have a dishwasher and cook two meals a day and pack one. I don’t know what I’d do without rubber gloves

I wouldn’t worry about the 35 calories (even despite the HFCS) – the alternative would have been artificial sweetener, which some might say is comparable. And don’t forget that before we all knew how bad HFCS is, we probably all consumed it somewhat frequently (unless you grew up super different from most Americans). And we’re all (I think 🙂 pretty okay. Not that I think we should keep consuming it in mass quantities, I’m just saying it will all be okay.

I totally do dishes all the time. I feel bad running the dishwasher so often but the alternative is using water from the sink to wash – the dishes have to get clean! But I think it’s totally normal if you cook a lot. Trade offs, I guess.

I think I spend about $125/week (2 people). But my husband eats lunch out a few times a week, and we eat out for dinner or get takeout a few nights a week (sushi or thai usually) so that number isn’t all we spend on food each week. then there’s what we spend on wine.

I don’t count calories or eat too little, so I can’t really answer the sex drive question. Interesting question though.

    Kath,
You always make dinner (unless you are out-and I know now you have to pack it)but do you ever feel like just having cereal for dinner? And would you?

I ask because sometime’s its really about all I can stomach.

I live alone but cook for my bf most nights and I feel like I do dishes all the time too! its normal..that and laundry~hah

Sammy- I’m not trying to lose any weight and I don’t count cals but I try to eat really healthy (well plus dessert) most days and my sex drive has never been better! haha! I’ve struggled with an ED but I’m learning to love my body and be confident naked and my bf of 6 yrs couldn’t be happier 🙂 . My secret was to gain self confidence and make sure you are eating enough! No one wants to have sex when they are starving or thinking about food! I would re look at your diet and make sure you are getting enough cals and nutrients so you can enjoy other things like sex! also, are you taking Birth control? I’ve heard that can decrease your drive, but I’ve been on it since high school (since I didn’t have a period- I’m 22 now) and it doesn’t affect me..but everyone is different

I spend $35 a week on my local organic fruit and veggie delivery and then an additional $80 at the grocery store= $115 per week for my husband and me. I make dinner every weeknight and make lunch for both me and my husband. I have another $50 budgeted per week for eating out-which means for us-1 dinner out on the weekends.

I tried to drop down to $60 a week at the grocery store but it with rising food costs I couldn’t quite cut it, $80 seems to be just right.

What’s with all the passive aggressive comments about how much Kath eats?

She doesn’t eat a lot of calories; she just uses them wisely (i.e., to get a lot of volume).

What exactly does eating in volume mean?

And Kath, what are your views on the bars soyjoy’s .. they seem pretty healthy, but i dont really know much.. and LunaBars and Larabars, are they supposed to replace a meal, or just a snack, because they seem to high in calories to be a snack?

P.s your pictures always make your food look so appetizing =]

Man, I don’t even want to think about how much we spend on food each week…too much!

I live in a tiny apartment with no dishwasher and even though my boyfriend pitches in after dinner, I do dishes ALL THE TIME. Love the yellow gloves.

I think sex drive is more linked to stress and sleep rather than food. But that’s just me.

Kath, that salad looks great! You guys should definitely go back soon for a glass of wine.

Sorry for being so defensive — I’m really just annoyed by that comment left yesterday (about how someone would need to run 5 miles, too, if she ate as much as Kath). I just think Kath is a good example of healthy balance.

And remember, Kath is maintaining, not losing. So she actually would have to eat a little bit less to lose.

kris t- volume eating focuses on eating lots of filling, fiber rich foods that are lower in calories/higher in water content. so instead of a PB&J sandwich, you’d have tofu, some crackers, some yogurt, carrots, strawberries, etc…

i think there’s a book about it called volumetrics or something? it works for me!!

oh and regarding dishes: it takes a little bit of practice, but clean as you go! sometimes i cook with friends and they are always amazed of how clean the kitchen is when we sit down to eat — they didnt even notice i was cleaning. it makes post-meal a lot nicer, too 🙂

also, double-use pots. like, if im making pasta, i boil and strain it, then i put it back in the dirty pot and dump in the sauce to mix it. then i serve it straight from the pot. i’m classy like that. 😛

caitlinbo- i need a lesson in that. i dont have a dishwasher, let my dirty dishes get out on control and have to devote an hour and a hlaf to doing them on the weekends. i always vow to wash as i go but havent been able to do it yet.

    Steph,
Definitely not alone! I feel like I do them a lot too. But I also try my best not to dirty things in the first place, wash as I go (while something is cooking for 2-3 minutes) and try to streamline the process as much as possible. See if you can work on reducing the dishes you dirty first, then the rest might all get easier.

    Maran,
I don’t normally buy my produce there but I didn’t want to make 2 trips. But it’s really not as expensive as you might think if you’re buying seasonal items. The peaches and raspberries were just the same as HT. LOVED Press. I will meet you there one Friday or in August (did you get my email??)

    Leah,
Good to know! Next time I’m using WW pastry flour.

    Cupcake81 ,
YES I know I need to do a video ASAP!! What should I do!?!? I will put it on my Saturday To-do list and come up with something for lunch. Maybe grilled veggies??

    Sammy ,
    1) I’ve never noticed a correlation….interesting! I agree that stress/sleep is more problematic.

    2) I shoot for $75, end up around $100 and get mad at the weeks when we go over $100, which happens maybe 25% of the time.

    scalewontbudge ,
Yes, I will tell you if I couldn’t finish something or shared a plate.

    Tina O.,
That may happen in the coming weeks! I don’t think i woudl choose cereal though. A PB&J or turkey sandwich is just as quick to fix and would be my choice over cereal, but I wouldn’t rule it out.

    Bev ,
Thanks! It’s hardly flawless up close!! I use Aveeno For Face Sunscreen and love it.

    Kath
