You are here: Home / Weekend / NEAT!

January 31, 2009

NEAT!

It is too pretty of a day to go to the gym (plus I wanted to spend time with the husband) so I decided to make today a NEAT day – Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis. I read an article in this month’s Natural Health Magazine about NEAT and think it’s a really cool concept. I guess I cheated a little because I don’t know if yoga and bike riding count as non-exercise activities, but both were part of my daily activities.

After breakfast we showered and headed to Costco. It was a madhouse there!! They were giving out tons of samples (including chocolate cake!) but I honestly was not tempted because I was still full from my muffin festival this AM. LOOK WHAT I FOUND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Whoo hoo!!! I was really hoping to find Plain flavor, but these are still an awesome find to have for packing my lunches quickly.

We also stocked up on: vanilla soy milk ($1 per carton and cheaper than milk), tomato paste, QUAKER OATS = 3 months of breakfast for $6 (minus add-ins of course), capers (a huuuge jar), spinach, feta cheese, Sabra hummus, Annie’s Mac-n-Cheese, canned salmon, mushrooms, peppers & tomatoes. Pushing a cart around that weighs more than me for 30 minutes & carrying in heavy groceries = NEAT!

When we got home at 12:30 we decided to clean out the pantry in the garage (well, I decided and he obeyed

 this !
) and fix some hooks that were loose around the house. An hour of shelf organizing and sorting = NEAT.

Then we had lunch at 2pm. Muffin oatmeal held me over for ages.

For lunch I heated up leftover Tomato, Garbanzo, Speltberry Soup.

And had that with toast crackers.

It was surprisingly filling for not being much volume –

After lunch we hopped on our bikes and trekked about 6 miles to Trader Joe’s. We took the long way along the Greenway for a more scenic ride. It was quite freezing out there, but we did warm up a lot once we got going. We stopped into Great Harvest (which is next to TJ’s) and the husband chatted with his work friends and brought me an “Oops” Berry Cream Cheese Scuffin to taste. I wasn’t hungry, but I ate about 1/4 of it anyway. Oops! We picked up our stuff and biked home.

12 miles of biking to get some fruit + yogurt at Trader Joe’s = NEAT.

We’ve got just a little bit to get dressed up and make a salad to take to Kate + Nate’s tonight. We’re gathering with a bunch of friends for an impromptu pizza + movie night that took way more planning from Nate and me than you’d ever imagine 😉

Wheee!

Hmm, I think your biking and yoga probably mean you did cheat on your NEAT day today, but once in a while giving a rest from the intense gym workouts is a good idea anyways.
The soup looks amazing and I’m totally going to BJ’s tomorrow to check out if they sell chobs too. We’ll see…

Someday very soon Ryan and I will bike to get our groceries too. Can’t wait.

Also, I love getting NEAT in throughout the day. I think a lot of people do not realize how important NEAT can be, and how we need to consciously make the effort to get up and move around, especially in this day and age where so many have jobs that are sedentary.

When I am doing a lot of heavy writing, I make sure to get up and walk around, do a few sets of jumping jacks, or even head to the gym and get in my reading while on a slow speed on the treadmill rather than just sitting all day long. So key and it is amazing how this kind of normal activity can really boost your daily calorie burn!

Hey, I’m so excited to hear you talk about N.E.A.T… my brother works for this startup company that is based on DR. Levine’s NEAT research — it’s called MUVE, and I bet you’ll find this quite fascinating… http://www.muveit.com/

My entire family has changed our lives based on this stuff. It really works — I’ve even outfitted my treadmill so that I can work and walk at the same time (I office out of my home).
