A Better U, A Better Giveaway

The American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women campaign has just launched a new free 12-week online nutrition program: Go Red BetterU. The program is founded on the premise that improving their heart health doesn’t have to be a major undertaking, you can start with small choices and goals. Heart disease is the no. 1 killer of women, and there are so many ways to reduce your risk by living a healthier life. I am all about making good CHOICES. You are in control of your own body.

So in honor of the program, the AHA is giving away this BetterU, BetterMe Kit:

BetterU, BetterMe Kit Photo

It includes:

  • A super-cute tote bag for the gym
  • BPA-free water bottle
  • Go Red Grocery Guide to help you made heart-healthy choices at the store
  • A Go Red yoga mat
  • A signature red dress pin
  • Heart-healthy snack, Craisins

Leave a comment with your best heart-healthy habit to enter! Winner will be randomly selected this evening.

NOTE: I wont be answer>ing comments on this post due to a likely large comment volume!

***

Today is wide open. Unfortunately the sun is not.

One thing I definitely want to do: CLEAN this house!! It’s gotten dusty. Gotta work on some nutrition stuff too, and get in a workout.

See ya for mid-day munch.

I do a lot of walking with my growing family. I have two children who are 2 and a half and 14 months and we (my husband and I) try to incorporate as much activity into our lifestyle as possible. Also I try to include lean meats (the fewer meats the better) as well as fish and nuts as they contain Omega 3 fatty acids for our hearts and my children’s brain development. We have never fed our children unhealthy foods (with the exception of special occasions) and they reap the benefits of all kinds of delicious, bright in color veggies and fruit. Not to mention they will carry this lifestyle with them when they get older. 🙂

When I was 25 years old, my doctor told me I had high cholesterol. Since MANY women in my family have died from heart disease, I decided to make a change in my life. I completely changed the way that I eat – many more vegetables (I was already eating a lot of fruit, but no veg), more plant based proteins and far fewer animal products (especially ice cream and meat). Not only did I reverse my cholesterol problem in 6 mos, but I lost 20 lbs over two years, and I feel a million times better. Veggies and beans for life (well, for a long life)!

My best heart healthy habit aside from exercising and eating right? I keep stress at bay! I will not tolerate it AT ALL. Anytime I feel myself getting stressed and annoyed I take a minute to evaluate the situation and ask myself will this matter in 6 minutes? 6 months? 6 years? If its something so very trivial evaluating the situation seriously prevents me from have some major melt downs.

There are days when my 6 rule goes out the window but for the most part it works 90% of the time and I have way more smiles than frowns! Exercise and food intake aren’t the only factors that matter when it comes to your heart.. mental health is just as important.

One habit I have stuck with (in addition to regular exercise) is to always park your car far away from the entrance to a building and walk. I also try to take the 9 flights of stairs to my office at least 3 times per week. This allows for some wiggle room if I am running late and need to take the elevator. 🙂

Taking excellent care of my health all around. I exercise daily, eat well, and try to live as stress free as possible. Did you know flossing and taking gare of your teeth/gums in general reduce your risk of hear disease? Gum disease is linked to heart disease. I know random facts like this because my mom has congestive heart failure, and many many complications due to this. I look at how she lived her life (smoked, never exercised, ate terrible fatty and fried foods, and didn’t take care of her oral health) I do just the opposite.

He has heart disease despite his extremely healthy habits (we have a long family history) and has had one “silent” heart attack (he didn’t know that it happened until he went in to the doctor and they told him he had blockage in his arteries). My dad tells me all about his medications, and doctor visits and I think it is great information for me to know, because I want to be informed about the different options that I will likely one day have to face regarding cholesterol and heart disease.

I was trying to narrow it down, but I really couldn’t decide between my daily yoga practice (1 1/2-2 hrs each morning), drinking water throughout the day (amounting to about 100oz), or eating A LOT of vegetables (one of my favorite things to do is to see how colorfully creative I can get with my food-a lot of times it is so beautiful to look at that I end of admiring it for several minutes before digging in). Then I realized that I don’t have to narrow it down. They are all my best habits :-).

As a side note, signs of heart disease are different for women than they are for men, and are often overlooked.

    Atypical symptoms in women include:

    • Unusual fatigue
    • Shortness of breath, difficulty breathing
    • Dizziness, nausea, unexplained anxiety

Both men and women often experience symptoms including:

    • Chest pain
    • Unexplained perspiration
    • Indigestion

Heart disease is the #1 killer of women!

I recently starting amping up my goal of 400 minutes of cardio per week by adding the Couch 2 5K training program to my routine. As someone who has spent her whole life unable to run a mile (even as a scrawny kid) it’s amazing how far I’ve come!

Plus, I’m know to add a glass of red wine to the occasional meal. Being heart healthy can taste sooo good!

To be good to my heart I think one of the more important things I’ve been doing is trying not to let myself get too stressed. If I can feel the tension start building up, I take a couple of minutes to do some deep breathing and music-listening (which is a really good de-stresser to me).

How fun! I heart the AHA 🙂 While my weight and overall health have been important for me, I think my tipping point in really try to get healthy is when I found I had potentially high cholesterol a little over a year ago. That was right about the time that I stated reading KERF and I kicked off my oatmeal eating habits! While they’re not usually as fancy and fun as yours and many other bloggers, I eat oatmeal at least 5 days out of the week and love it 🙂 Thus far, I’d have to say it’s my best heart healthy habit…

To keep my heart healthy, I try to walk everywhere possible…the library, the grocery store, the post office, etc. When I have to drive, I always park at the back of the parking lot, so I get a little extra exercise. Adding in walking like this doesn’t add that much time to my errands, and my heart gets a big benefit.
