Mitral Valve Replacement

Do you ever get a phrase stuck in your head!?! Someone please make my brain stop saying “mitral valve replacement” over and over!! Once we made up the word “jibbajabologist” while doing a jig-saw puzzle (don’t ask

 this !
) and I got that stuck for a week straight!

Compromise

I wanted to work out this morning, but I also knew I needed to study so I compromised and studied at the gym. My workout was pretty easy (it’s hard to push yourself when you’re focusing on memorizing things!) but I’m glad I was able to get in both. I did 45 minutes on the ET (a different species of ET than yesterday).

Before I left I had 2 of my oat bran pancakes that I froze with some PB. They are good – kind of like cornmeal in this form and much grittier than the oatmeal pancakes, but still a fun texture!

Delicious Kath Classic

You know what I was craving this morning! One day without Kath Classic and I can’t WAIT to have it again.

dsc06607.JPG

I added a drizzle of a new honey we got a the grocery store (our old honey bear was empty and we decided to try a new darker kind of honey). It was quite good.

dsc06609.JPG

From above with a cup of coffee –

dsc06606.JPG

Breakfast today was about 470 kcal, 9 grams fiber and 17 grams protein.

Today

I’ve got my big test today at 11 and then I get to relax for the rest of the week and just work on more long-term assignments and daily work. I think I have a chemistry quiz today on stoichiometry but obviously that’s not priority! Actually, I think stoichiometry is fun so I’m pretty sure I know how to do it (nerd alert!)

Physio lab is this afternoon, and then we’re making old fashioned hamburgers for dinner!!

I hope you do well on your test! You’re right about the oatmeal. We had blueberry today but I can’t wait to go to the grocery store to pick up some bananas for the Kath classic. Isn’t honey delicious on the oatmeal? Yum

    Hi Kath!

Good luck on your test today! I often studied on the ET or treadmill in college and found that it helped me retain more info!

    Question for Kath/Everyone-

What kind of workout pants/clothes do you have? I have now shrunk 2 or 3 pairs of pants and its starting to get expensive to keep buying more! Is there a brand out there thats really versatile in the washer/dryer??

    Thanks!! Allyson 🙂

allyson – these running shorts from old navy RULE

    http://www.oldnavy.com/browse/product.do?cid=9545&pid=558348&scid=558348032

they are cheap and they wick away the moisture from your body while you sweat. plus, they come with built in underwear, which eliminates laundry! yay!

i love them! i’m a size 2/4 and wear an XS, so they run kind of small.

Last night my sister was supposed to pick up some bananas at the store b/c I wanted my Kath Classic Oatmeal. She didn’t know they didn’t have to be perfect, and since they weren’t great she didn’t get them!! I was sooo sad and missed them this morning, but used an apple instead and they were pretty good. No marshmallowy bananas 🙁 Every day I look forward to the next morning for my oatmeal…it’s probably the highlight of my day, which is kind of sad. But I’m a college student, so life’s rather boring here haha!

I’m with Caitlin (in FL). I have those same Old Navy running shorts, and I love them. I hardly notice them when I’m running/on the elliptical (and isn’t that the point). There’s also a pretty flattering cut – I mean, I look cute in them! 😛

    Hi Kath,

I’m new to your site and I’m really enjoying it- my husband and I were married 2 1/2 years ago- but I totally think of us as newlyweds still- and we’re total foodies- so it’s fun getting some new ideas from time to time! (And I have to confess- it’s also pretty cool to read your blog because we live in Greensboro- small world!)

Anways, sorry if I am making you repeat yourself with this question… we’re about the same size, so I’m just curious – how many calories do you burn in 45 min on the E.T.? My husband in 6 foot 4 inches and I always find myself trying to keep up with him, but, I’m more than a foot shorter, so, I’m just looking for perspective from another little gal!

Enjoy the great weather- it’s getting up to 70 in Greensboro!

I have about five pairs of old navy work out pants that I love…they are all the same, in a couple different colors. I haven’t had a problem with them shrinking, even though I think they’re plain old cotton. Plus they were super cheap!

Darker honey has more antioxidants right?

I am trying not to look at the work again or type it because I am afraid it will get stuck in my head too! I’m prone to songs, words getting stuck in my head!

    Happy Monday Everyone!

Allyson- I have a pair of gym pants from Target that I’m addicted to wearing. They’re made from a dry-fit material and don’t shrink in the dryer. I purchased them in November and they’re still as good as new! Good Luck!

BethEllis – ET is short for Elliptical Trainer ~ almost like a ski machine with handlebars that move… Less impact on knees than a treadmill… Hope this helps!

As for workout clothes, I find the best deals at TJ Maxx or Marshall’s. Target also has some really great stuff.

Yaz-there is a video post of the oatmeal pancakes. Check out the videos section under blog categories.

Lindsay-I think Kay is right in that darker honey has more antioxidants. Its taste is also richer. Something neat about honey is that regular consumption of a honey harvested in your area can reduce seasonal allergies! I think you need a teaspoon a day and it has to come from within a 50 mile radius, how cool is that!

I love Lululemon workout clothes. They are expensive but they last FOREVER and they are preshrunk too!

However, you can buy Lululemon (new and used) on ebay and save tons of cash this way. I got some new or like new items for almost 50% off on ebay.

Ange, I second you on the Lululemon pants. They are absolutely the best! They are supposed to be for yoga, but I wear them for all of my workout – they are just so comfortable. They are expensive, but I think worth the investment. I don’t dry mine in the dryer, though… I’m afraid to ruin them.

thank you kath for opening up my world of oatmeal. i never knew you could experiment so much with it. My favorite oatmeal recipe that i use is oatmeal made with all soymilk, then mixed with 1/3 cup pumpkin, toasted walnuts and sometimes with peanut butter or bananas. The cup of soymilk really makes it nice and creamy with the pumpkin.

    Allyson ,
I really like Target’s Champion stuff. And Old Navy. Anything cheap works for me!! I’m just going to sweat in it and wash it to death 🙂

    Nancy,
The polenta tastes kind of like corn bread – it’s made from corn meal. The texture is the same. It’s like compacted grits. I liked it a lot minus the onion flakes! I think next time we’ll make it from scratch and then form it into a tube.

    HeatherK,
I eat apple in oats a lot in the fall when we have tons of fresh North Carolina apples! Pears too! Oats are definitely one of the highlights of my day too 🙂

    Lindsay,
I’m not sure personally of the benefits of dark vs. light honey, but here’s what WH Foods had to say:
Darker honeys, specifically honey from buckwheat flowers, sage and tupelo, contain a greater amount of antioxidants than other honeys, and raw, unprocessed honey contains the widest variety of health-supportive substances.
    http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=foodspice&dbid=96

    Littlediva,
I do the ET with at about level 13 or 14 and my heart rate is between 150 and 160. This is usually about 350 kcal for 45 minutes. Hope that helps give you an idea. And you and your husband totally need to come to Charlotte to visit us for lunch one Saturday!

    Tina,
Yup, I made them the same way. Here’s a quote from when I made them: My batch was 1/2 a cup of oat bran (240 kcal), 1/2 cup egg whites and a splash of hemp milk. It made about 6.5 pancakes, about 50 kcal each.

    Tara,
Can I be in your dreams too!! Yum!

    Michelle,
Your oat combo sounds great – I’m so glad you’re hooked!
