Midnight Madness

I could not sleep last night 🙁 Tossed and turned and this annoying cricket kept chirping at regular intervals.

I blame the intense exercise so late in the day. We’ll have to see how that goes next week.

I finally dosed off and woke up at 4AM when Matt left with intense hunger. At first I put in ear plugs and attempted to fall back asleep, but 5 minutes later I was up and heading to the kitchen. Hunger can be confusing at times, but sometimes you know without a doubt that you just need to eat. The only thing I ever want in the middle of the night is cereal with milk so I had some Erewhon Raisin Bran and Nature’s Path Granola in soy milk. And sleepily took a photo of it just for you 🙂 Add about 50% more to this bowl – I had seconds.

IMG_2593 (640x427)

I felt MUCH better upon returning to my bed. I guess that soccer was even more intense than I realized! And what’s amazing is that the cereal not only instantly helped my stomach, but my limbs felt better when I got back in bed too. Guess every inch of me needed a little more fuel.

4 hours later…. hungry again!! I let myself sleep in and woke up at 8.

IMG_2596 (640x427)

I debated doing yoga first (I am rather stiff today) or going for walk, but I knew I wanted breakfast for energizing purposes.

IMG_2598 (640x427)

  • 1/3 cup Pineapple Chobani (my last! Hope I can find more!)
  • ~1/2 cup Kashi GoLean Crunch
  • 1 chopped peach
  • 1 tbsp coconut
  • 1/2 tbsp flax
  • Dollop Barney Butter for fun

IMG_2597 (640x427)

Despite been tired today, coffee was not appealing at all. I think because I am thirsty too. So I went with Coconut Chai Tea

Good for you for listening to your hunger at night! I’m pretty certain I would have laid in bed, agonizing over whether to eat something, and wouldn’t have been able to fall back asleep. Hunger can be confusing, you are right!

It’s so frustrating when you can’t fall asleep!! Sounds like you really needed the fuel and wouldn’t have been able to go back to sleep without it – that’s good that you listened to your body. I’ve never actually woken up in the middle of the night hungry…but I do wake up very hungry quite often 🙂

When you wake up hungry in the middle of the night, you know your body needs fuel (vs emotional eating). I’ve been hungrier than usual lately – I think it’s because I’m finally running again!

    Hi Kath,

Any tips for getting less fiber? / Healthy food options that deliver less fiber?

I track my cals and fiber on sparkpeople, and even on days when I think I’m cutting back on fiber, I end up with 40-50 grams, minimum. All of the foods I love seem to feature fiber (and they’re not the highly processed ‘franken-food’ varieties), and I’m not sure what healthy alternatives I should try (it’s starting to really mess with my digestion).

Also, I know this question may be better suited for a consultation and understand if it’s not possible to answer it with that limited background info.

    Thanks!
    A

    A,
My first question was going to be are you eating things like All Bran or Fiber One or Flat Out wraps. Cut those out immediately if so. But if you’re eating all whole foods, I’d just say cut back a little on the veggies and higher fiber ones until your system feels good again. 45 grams is an OK amount, but if it’s bothering you you should cut back.

I have to ask a question…I don’t understand the hype about Barney Butter?! We just moved and our new grocery stocks it, so I was so excited to finally try it after seeing it on all the blogs. But to me it tastes more artificial than, say, TJ’s Almond Butter, and also, it contains palm oil, which I thought was bad for you. Am I missing something? And what about palm oil? Is it actually okay for you? I got the crunchy, so maybe I need to try the creamy…

    JBlue,
I didn’t know what the hype was about when I first tried it either. But I fell in love when I finished my first jar. Once it’s gone, you’ll want it back. It’s the roasted flavor that is so unique. There is nothing unhealthy about palm oil. Raw nut butter would be better, but palm oil is not bad for you. The crunchy is my favorite.
