Lotta Latte

Mmmmmmmmmm!!! The husband frothed us milk this morning and poured the last bit over our oatmeal bowls. Talk about creamy!

DSC03483

We were up at 5:15 this morning to workout. I am SO EXCITED about my day now that I had a great workout already. I forgot what a great feeling it is. We biked to the gym with our head and taillights blinking. Riding in the dark wasn’t bad at all since it’s such a familiar path. I knew where all the sidewalk bumps were and it helped that there were very few cars to worry about. I don’t think I’d bike by myself though, just for safety purposes. Excluding getting mugged, I could fall and would be all alone. So at the gym, I did 40 minutes on the ET followed by a quick rotation on the upper body machines. I did 2 sets of 15 per machine. (Chest, back, shoulders, tricep pulldown, bicep bar). I have read multiple times that if you push it hard for 2 sets, you don’t need a third, so I never waste my time on a third. After a quick bike home, I’d burned 450 calories before 7am

 this !

So back to the latte love!

Today’s oats were fabulous:

  • 1/3 cup oats, 1/3 cup 1%, 1/3 cup water
  • 1/2 small banana
  • The last of the grainberries (probably only 2 tsp per person)
  • Pinch salt + vanilla paste
  • About 2 tbsp frothed milk
  • About 1/6 of a granola plank
  • AB on a spoon

DSC03482

Plus a latte, made with only 1/2 a cup of coffee and 1/2 a cup of frothed milk.

I’m really excited about my classes today, lunch at EarthFare (I debated the dining hall, which is really my only other option, but I decided if I keep working on small salads, they are close enough in price that EarthFare’s 10 minutes of walking and organic ingredients are worth about $1.50 more), then I have a wide-open evening with a fun dinner item planned!

And tomorrow’s Friday!!

Hi Kath-Your meals look yummy, as always. I am one of those that cuts out recipes but never makes them!

Quick question for you (and anyone else) – if you were stranded on an island, what 5 foods would you want with you?

Mine would be: oatmeal, apples, avocados, almonds and Ezekiel english muffins.

Great call with the latte-over-oats. Sounds like heaven to me.

I love frothed milk, but since lactose kind of bothers me I don’t use it too much. I wonder if hemp milk would froth well. I love the idea of frothed milk and oats.

    Have a great day!

    Hi Kath!

I took an ACE course about a month ago and the instructor said the same thing about how many sets you should do. He said that as long as you do at least one set to failure then you’re good to go! 🙂

I picked up the new issue of Shape yesterday simply because you were featured as a success story. I was so excited! You truly are very inspirational and motivational! I’ve told a lot of people about your blog.

I have a question for those of you who may be runners. I recently upped my running from 1.5 miles every other day to one mile one day, 2 miles the next… only taking 1 day off per week to rest.

I’ve noticed after my 2 mile nights and the morning after I am sooooo incredibly hungry. I’m trying to be very mindful of what I eat but I’d like some suggestions of how I could better fuel myself the night/morning after my runs so I’m not so famished!

    Hi Kath,
I just had a suggestion to save $$ on salad bar that charge by weight for lunch. I bring abig container of greens and cukes from home. I am a CSA member as well and get the other stuff from the salad bar ie the expensive hard to prepare stuff, this way I don’t pay salad bar price for the bulk weight of greens and cukes. Just an idea. PS, I can’t wait for your cookbook, I am so curious about the mystery recipes!

Katie MC, I also do that too! I add my own spinach and just buy some of the salad bar items that I don’t prepare. Don’t know how much it cuts down in cost but anything helps!

Kath- you may have mentioned this in past posts, but I’m wondering if you exercised the same amount when you were losing weight- or was it just the amount of calories that changed? I’m finding it hard to eat less and add more exercise- I don’t have the energy!

    Hey Everyone:

I want to buy a bike – used – but have NO idea what to look for in a bike. I want it mostly for riding on the road to do errands etc. – I will be riding it in rainy vancouver – there are so many bikes to choose from – I really don’t know the first thing to look for!

    Thanks!

    cindy ,
Fun question! But you can probably guess mine!

Obviously, oatmeal. Plus greek yogurt, kashi crackers, some form of ice cream, a nut butter, and a root vegetable soup. 🙂

    sarahH ,
I tried!! They didn’t choose to include it.

    Lindsay ,
We have a cappuccino machine that we use for it.

    Cynthia ,
    Hi and thanks!!!

    Katie MC,
Great idea!! it’s the raw veggies that get me, but I always get it just for the toppings.

    Faye ,
Yup, I exercised the same amount and ate basically the same amount. But I am much less strict now that I’m not tracking and allow myself many more splurges. Check out the FAQ page for more answers.

    Kinder ,
    Glad you liked it!!

    Biz ,
Awesome!! Yum planks. I never eat more than 1/4 at a time either.

    Kat’s Veggie Life,
I really didn’t have a clue either. I just found a “women’s bike” that looked nice and had hand breaks.

    Leigh ,
    Williams-Sonoma!

Morning workouts are the best for sure! I only wish the sun rose year-round at 5– it sure makes it hard to get up when it’s dark.

Betsy in Pittsburgh, I don’t know how you’re fueling yourself now but I’ve found eating smaller, protein- and fiber-rich meals very frequently keeps me from getting hungry. Ever. Running generally supresses my appetite. Nice job increasing your mileage!

Kat’s Veggie Life – I’d recommend getting a road bike, if you are going to be riding mostly just on the road and you are comfortable riding actually on the road (and not on the sidewalk)
you’ll go faster and be more comfortable! if you do end up with a moutain style bike (with 26″ wheels instead of the larger sized road wheels), make sure to get slick tires. also be sure that your bike has seat rack mounts so you can use panniers to carry stuff in or you could get a basket. the panniers will hold much more.
and for vancouver, get good fenders! and maybe pick up something for riding around in the rain. be sure the bike you buy has really good brakes. brakes tend to work less well when wet, so if you’re starting off with something weak, you’ll have trouble stopping in rainy conditions.

As a college student myself I would always buy things on sale. Like when the store would run a manager’s special and mark down salmon and such…i would buy it and cook it that night, or freeze it and the same goes for chicken breast. If you don’t have a george foreman grill I recommend that for easy cooking. On nights I dont want to cook, which is pretty often, I try to throw something together that’s easy and still somewhat healthy. My favorite go to is some type of a sandwich whether it’s turkey or salmon salad. I also love to throw together a salad and pair it with soup or something. I try to buy a mixture of veggies or it and either have that or pair it as a side that week so it doesn’t go bad!

    haya,

Thanks for the recommendations! I will definately look for those qualities. Great point about the brakes – it seems obvious but I never would have thought about that. I will be riding on the road because people get mad (including myself) when bikers ride on the sidewalk and there are plenty of bike routes where there are few cars!

    I will continue my search!

I sort of do the same thing as Katie MC. I work next to a whole foods, so when I want salad I bring all the heavy items from home, cut up in a container, carrots, zuch, cucumber, tomato, whatever I have. I’ll usually do a tuna/salmon salad and throw that on top. Then I get the light stuff from the salad bar, ie mixed greens, seaweed salad, and anything else that looks good. Most days I can get away with 2.50-3.00 and still have a huge salad.
