Laid Back

Dining in my PJs on the couch with House Hunters

 this !

IMG_0765 (768x1024)

Getting through these marathon days are so much easier knowing I have Thursdays off. When I was in class from 8am-9pm this summer 4 days in a row it was harder to charge through.

My giant salad of a lunch held me over well, as usual, and I got hungry around 6:30 for my LaraBar. Recalls, schmecalls – they’re just doing that to protect themselves legally. I seriously doubt LaraBar is infested with tainted PB.

IMG_0753 (768x1024)

I nibbled on this guy and savored it – took me about 30 minutes!

IMG_0752 (1024x768)

Here’s my friend Travis, who wanted to be on the blog! So I am featuring him to show you that he has traded his usual sugary soda for a water!! I just hope he keeps it up. As a future dietitian, he’s got to set an example!

IMG_0755 (768x1024)

I didn’t feel that hungry upon returning home – until I started eating! I gobbled this leftover Mustard Greens + Beans Quinoa.

IMG_0761 (768x1024)

And I was craving yogurt, so I had a half cup with the last of my secret oatmeal cookies (I saved a few more in the freezer!) and a tsp of raspberry jam.

IMG_0758 (1024x768)

My tray, with tea.

What I Learned Today

Clinical was awesome tonight!!

Here’s a video that we watched reporting the research that calorie restriction may lead to longevity. It’s a bit long (12 minutes), but interesting if you have the time.

Healthy Old Age

And the research behind it: CALERIE: Comprehensive Assessment of Long-Term Effects of Reducing Intake of Energy.

I am SO EXCITED about yoga + oats tomorrow. I have come to love and look forward to the ritual.

G’night!

I found peanut butter larabars at Target for $0.54 on Monday and couldn’t buy them because they were flagged at the register to not be sold. I was so bummed! When will I ever find 54 cent larabars again??

    Good job, Travis!

I feel the same way sometimes, not realizing that I’m really hungry until I start eating! Unfortunately, some times I don’t stop 🙁

I feel the same way about the Larabar issue.. I was about to throw mine out, but since I saw you and others agree with me, I think I will enjoy my bars rather than waste them.

Dinner in PJs while watching the tube? sounds like a good night, indeed.

    Thanks for the video link!

I had quinoa and chickpeas for dinner last night and lunch today too; it’s such a good combination. Last night, I just sauteed white onion and cumin seeds in a little olive oil, added 1 tsp each of ground turmeric, crushed garlic, ginger and chilli, and diced pumpkin, eggplant, carrot, courgette, celery, cauliflower and broccoli, mixed in one small can tomato paste, 1 can of diced tomatoes with basil, 1 can of Morrocan-spiced crushed tomatoes and 1 can of chickpeas. You just simmer it for forty minutes or so, serve over quinoa and it’s really good. 🙂

Today I just had the leftover quinoa with half a can of chickpeas, buzzed in the microwave, then seasoned with lemon juice, flax seed oil, salt, pepper and a sprinkling of pumpkin seeds. Also good! I always make my quinoa the same way, adding 1 crushed clove of garlic, 1 tsp organic vegetable stock powder and about ten threads of saffron to the pot while it’s simmering; I highly recommend it!

As a New Zealander who’s fascinated with some of the US products I see on the American food blogs, I had a question about the Larabars: are they just dried fruit and ground nuts? They sound yummy; unfortunately I’m allergic to nuts, but I can’t resist eating natural fruit leather on an almost daily basis, and I wondered if Larabars taste similar, only thicker and more bulked out with the nuts?

I agree with Veggie Girl, why not just get ur refund from larabar instead of risk side effects? Lots of people have gotten sick and I read that a few died, sorry to be Debbie Downer- but you know that not everyone was going to agree with you on that. I order a huge case from Amazon that was delivered yesterday…they are going back!!

Wow, I’m surprised at the recall comments. The corporation where they found salmonella did supply pb to General Mills, who makes Larabars, so even if the recall was issued out of an abundance of caution and it’s unlikely the bars are contaminated, why risk it, especially when they’ll issue a full refund? Over 400 people have gotten sick in 43 states, and 10 have died. Just doesn’t seem worth it however small the possibility.

    Wow, what a coincidence!

I had a gotten my first PB larabar and then I heard about the recall. Today I kept debating back and forth on whether I should eat it or throw it out. I figured that there wasn’t too great a chance that it would be contaminated, so I decided to eat it!

I hope we’re both okay! It was really yummy, and I don’t feel anything yet?

Eh, you knew the facts and made an informed decision, so choosing to eat it is your prerogative. I do think Larabar-gate brings up an interesting point, which is how desensitized America has become to safety recalls. You’re certainly not alone in ignoring the warnings… I think consumers have become so accustomed to regular taintings of our food supply that we just don’t take recalls seriously anymore. What a depressing statement about the safety/hygiene standards Americans have come to expect from our suppliers and government 🙁

Guys, This LaraBar is from a box I got EONS ago. I probably wouldn’t have chosen this flavor if I’d been to the grocery store to buy it last week.

    Laura ,
Most (if not all?) LaraBars have a base made of dates with mushed nuts and spices/flavors in them. There are several recipes online to make them at home that you could try to replicate them and perhaps we all could for the PB ones during the recalls?. I remember that Angela at Oh She Glows made some. And I think VeggieGirl did too.

your yogurt looks yummy!!! As for the recalls…i think its wise to be informed about it and know when you bought the pb product but honestly….is everyone just going to stop eating pb larabars forever b/c they are paranoid they will get recalled? They are processed bars you don’t know when they could or couldn’t be contaminated…..if you are that worried it is a great idea to make your own as Kath suggests but its not very nice to judge others for choosing to eat them.

Ok, so I had to chime in here. I also love chaturanga and surprisingly, plow, it really stretches my neck! I love the feeling after you are done, when you just lay there and feel so relaxed. The poses I struggle with most are humble warrior and toppling tree…people can actually do this??? Ha.

I too am working to achieve some more zen in my day. Its so easy to get caught up in the “go-go-go” I am making sure to take time out to focus on just “being”.

    Take care.

I don’t know guys, be careful! I ate a PB Larabar Sunday night and then woke up Monday morning (12 hours later) horribly sick. It’s best to throw them out and call the company to get your $$ back. They are my favorite flavor, so I’m hoping this doesn’t last long.

Not sure why everyone seems to think Larabar would be exempt…they’re owned by general mills now, whom I guarantee you uses industrial ingredients. I’m certain they are just being cautious, and that most of them are unlikely to make anyone sick. But it’s worth noting that they’re not longer made by a small business. GM purchased them in June.

Besides my love for cooking, nutrition and fitness, I LOVE HGTV too! Especially house hunters, it’s so fun to try to decide which house they are going to get. I always seem to pick the wrong one. I just bought a PB LaraBar to try before this recall, and now I am bummed because I absolutely love PB. Quinoa is great and it cooks pretty quick. I have a recipe for quinoa stuffed bell peppers on my blog which is really good!

Hi Kath! I too have read about calorie restriction as a method of increasing life span. When I was graduating with my B.S., there was a lot of news about these two guys who were hot on the trail of a set of genes involved in this process. I always thought it was a really interesting topic. Thanks for the video.

Also, the clinical definition of salmonellosis says that you get sick almost immediately – 30 min to an hour after ingestion of contaminated food – so if you’re not sick right now after eating your larabar, you’re probably ok. And though they are owned by GM, to be marketed as all-raw, they can’t use the same kind of PB that goes into most food products because it is cooked with sugar and such.

    Anywho, have a great day!
