Kind of a Drag

Remember that oldies song? I’ve got that phrase in my head.

I feel like kind of a drag today. All my clothes were tight this morning and I had to pick my loosest jeans, my stomach was having strange pains this morning during class and I feel like a marshmallow. I know it’s mostly water retention from last night’s choices, but gosh I wish it would hurry up and go away. I need a workout! I also think I’ve been celebrating more than I’ve been eating well these days. Guess it’s the summer time, but between the mountain trip, Boston, dinner’s out and Karen’s b-day, I think my gains have outweighed my losses. Just something to take note of.

Lunch was good though!

I packed a wrap with some more leftover thawed Easter ham, a Laughing Cow, red peppers, spinach, and mustard. It was quite delicious.

Plus 3 watermelon slices –

Grapes, or as the husband calls them “gnomps” because that’s the sound Homer makes when we pops things into his mouth one after another.

DSC03429

Pumpkin pie, a.k.a. 1/2 cup greek yogurt, 1/2 cup pumpkin, pumpkin pie spice, grainberries –

And a marshmallow-flavored meringue to emphasize how marshamallow-y I feel (although I didn’t know that when I packed my lunch yesterday!)

I have done way more internet surfing than studying since my class ended, so it’s time to buckle down with some Micro lab prep.

Can’t wait for my 4pm workout to get some of this energy and frustration out!

A workout will make you feel so much better…don’t worry! I, too, have been “enjoying” my excuses to indulge lately, I just have to remember that my good choices far outweigh my bad and I just need to get back on track. Have a good workout and sweat some of it out!

I know exactly how you feel.. i feel like since the summer the “different” kinds of food you eat just react to your body differently… I could not wait to get into the gym today between my classes.. i like hauled butt over there… i am sure you will feel better after a workout!

I’ve been overindulging lately as well. It seems so easy to do in the summer with all of the weekend get-a-ways, parties, b-b-q’s, etc. Now that Labor Day’s over, I’ll get back into my structured life a little bit more. I don’t know whether to be happy or sad about that 😉

Don’t worry, Kath. Give it a day or two and you’ll be back to normal. I do know exactly how you feel, though. I have also had one too many celebrations lately and my eating has been less than stellar. I was at my husband’s parents house yesterday for a barbeque and had ice cream 3 nights in a row! As if that weren’t bad enough, tomorrow we are celebrating his dad’s birthday and will be going out AGAIN!!! I am managing to keep my weight in check, but sometimes it’s up a pound or two and I get real surly and feel puffy & yucky! I just tell myself to wait a day ot two and it will be okay and I avoid the scale because I know that will make things worse. So, I just get back on track, eat healthy & make sure to get my workouts done. After a few days, everything is back to normal! Don’t get discouraged. You are a shining example of a healthy lifestyle and will be back to your old self in no time at all!

Too much garlic or onions makes my stomach unhappy, maybe the garlic is a little to blame?

It’s funny because I would have said that you have been eating less lately, no snacks, etc. But a few healthy days in a row and several good workouts will definitely help you feel better. I definitely know the feeling!

It is a gross feeling, but it is surprising how quickly it can go away. I do find water-y foods to be the best beaters of the bloat, so hopefully you’re feeling better after the watermelon and grapes.

***geez, now I’ve got that song on my mind! 😉

    Kath-
How does the pumpkin with Greek yogurt taste compared to the pumpkin with plain yogurt? Is it pretty much the same or do you notice a big difference?

    Hey Kath and everyone,

I was just catching up, and I saw the entry about GARLIC BREATH! I was surprised nobody mentioned this, but when you eat garlic, it is all about CITRUS to counteract. the best thing to do is to suck on a lemon wedge (sour, but it works!) also, since garlic comes out of your pores the next day, use a citrus scented body wash and/or lotion and that helps a lot!

I know those days, too! I have to say you have an awesome attitude toward working out tho. usually when I feel bloated it I can’t stand the thought of exercise… although of course that’s the thing that makes me feel better! lol i’m a strange creature.

    have fun ‘sweating it out’!!

Kath, I’ve only left comments a few times, but I read your blog regularly. I just have to tell you that this post made me love the blog even more! Your attitude about going a little off-track with your diet- that it happens, it isn’t the end of the world, and that things will go back to normal- is so admirable.

That being said, I hope you get your nice workout in!

I’ve been having the same gross, bloaty, marshmallowy feelings for the past few days now too. Much too much end of summer fun going on right now. But I’ve been getting in some good workouts, healthy meals and LOTS of water drinking, and I’m starting to feel a bit better and a bit more on track. And I know you’ll be back on track in no time at all. Gotta end the summer with some good celebrating, even if it does bring on the bloat just a tad. You had fun right? Makes it worth those couple days of stomach wiggle, at least in my opinion haha.

I just want to say thank you for your honesty and sharing with the world that even you sometimes have those “kind of a drag” days. It makes me realize it happens to everyone, not just me. Remember that this feeling always passes and before you know it, probably as soon as you return from your workout, you’ll be back to feeling your healthy A+ self. I always try to remind myself that there are much worse eaters out there who eat 3 fast food meals a day and don’t even think twice about it, so my one little splurge on “real food” to celebrate, really isn’t much to feel guilty about.

Summer seems like it should be an easy time to eat healthy with all that fresh food around and good weather to be outside and active but it just isn’t! I lost about 30lbs over the winter and have gained 2 back this summer! There are just so many reasons to celebrate in the summer and my family has weekly cookouts- it’s bad! I am looking forward to fall and winter and eating lots of yummy homemade (healthy) soups and root vegetables…. I am also hoping keeping my own food blog will help me to be more concious of all the little bites that have been sneaking back into my diet.

I finally got to see you in Shape. That’s really awesome! Congrats!

Ugh, I hate the after-bloat days…but at least some of the ugh-ness is negated by the memories of a really good day before!

Quick question: Where do you find your grainberries, and what grain are they? I’ve looked at our local market and I seem to be out of luck. =(

    Tracy ,
I think it’s thicker with greek yogurt (which makes sense) and I always prefer greek for that reason, and it’s got less tang. But regular is cheaper…

    Kate ,
    I’ve never heard that one!

    Maria + Emily,
Thanks for your comments – I’m glad the marshmallowyness was for a good cause 🙂

    Chris ,
Grainberries = wheat, rye or spelt berries. You can buy them all at Bob’s Red Mill’s online site. I can find wheat berries (a.k.a. hard red winter wheat) at EarthFare but the others came from Bob’s Red Mill.

    Runnersigh ,
Those were Garden of Eatin’ from EarthFare. I switch mine up. I get Rudi’s sometimes too. And I need to try the Ezekiel ones too!
