Inside Out

So glad that the storms are over. I have been terrified of tornados my whole life. Especially since I grew up in a house built in 1833 that moves in wind. I used to have a weather radio so I could be alerted by any severe weather if the power went out! We did ride out Hurricane Fran in that house –which was pretty terrifying – but it made it through. Although a tree missed our house by 1 foot!

Today things are calm and beautiful:

Gosh–I forgot what it was like to be outside all day until mom said it was time for dinner. Funny how back then, eating was not a good reason to have to go back inside. I would ignore the first few calls to dinner.

I have sometimes been compared to Hurricane Fran. My sister always loved the headline “Frances headed inland…thousands flee!” I thought it was pretty funny too! I’m much calmer these days…;-)

I love the cloth/napkins (?) with the dragonflies. Are those from your grandmother’s treasure chest or did you order them somewhere? Thanks and have a great day!

Don’t ever go to the top of the Empire State Building. It sways about 4 inches back and forth in normal weather and you can feel it.

I have never felt our house sway in the wind. Squeak and moan yes, but sway, no. Remember it’s built with much heavier timbers than modern houses — and HAS BEEN STANDING in good stead since 1833.

Tornadoes are my least favorite type of weather. We had a tornado warning one night and my mom woke us up and told us to come downstairs. I was grumpy because my sleep was interrupted, and promptly told her I would rather sleep through the tornado. At least then I wouldn’t worry for my life!

Kath, I’m curious–I’ve been putting chia seeds in my smoothies as well, but the seeds seem to remain intact even after they’re blended up. Do you think it’s that my blender (I have a magic bullet since I don’t have room for anything larger) just isn’t great, or do you have this problem as well?

Since growing up in the midwest, tornados have always been my biggest fear. When I first moved to the east coast, I heard a fire truck siren that sounded JUST like the tornado sirens in IL. Needless to say, I freaked out the first few times I heard them. And now living on the west coast, I have been able to replace that fear with earthquakes…
