Heeeeey Dude

I just beat the rain this morning! Up at 7, out the door by 7:45 (yeah, I had to read emails and blogs in bed for a bit

 this !
)

I ran 5.3 miles in the neighborhoods around my house. It was a good run. I seem to run well with an empty stomach – it’s like my stomach leads the way and if it’s full, it’s sluggish. The highlight of my run was definitely the Hey Dude theme song. “Freebird” gave me energy and Celine Dion’s “To Love You More” (my all-time favorite) brought in the final sprint just when the rain started coming down.

Matt brought home a nice loaf of Flax Oat Bran last night, so I decided to involve it in breakfast (esp. because that means no cooking and no pots to clean when I’m in a hurry).

I had two slices with 1/2 a mashed banana (the best way to eat banana on bread!) with walnut butter, the very last of my TJ’s blueberry preserves and flax

Plus a glass of soymilk shaken with Superfood Greens

IMG_7802 (1024x768)

IMG_7797 (1024x768)

And green peppermint tea (some generic brand)

Mary is out of the office today, but I am going into work to sit in on an appt with my friend Erin, who is an RD already and finishing her masters at Winthrop. We took Sports Nutrition together last summer. Then I’m spending the afternoon working alone in Mary’s office on some things: an article on pregnancy nutrition, some event planning, some work on my KERF online consultation text and some public relations stuff. I packed a lunch (AND better snacks today) and feel like a professional again 🙂

Watch out for those man-eating jackrabbits… And that killer cacti!

I like running on an empty stomach to, to a certain extent! If it’s growling when I wake up, I really have to eat something or I get stomach pains mid run. Also, if I’m running long distances (6+), I have to eat or I crash after an hour and tend to mail in the rest of my run.

I love the picture of your Superfood shake this morning. The perspective is perfect!!

Although eating something before working out is conventional wisdom, my runs are much better on just a cup of coffee + glass of water. I feel hydrated, but not weighed down. Works for me! Have a good day in the office 🙂

Kath, while I love seeing your photos, you’re spending a fortune. Why spend $15 for nut butter when you can buy a pound of organic nuts at Trader Joe’s for $5 and grind them in a Cuisinart? Same result. I add honey and cinnamon to my almond butter. As for bread, haven’t you heard of Sourdough No-Knead Bread? Five pounds of white/whole wheat flour is $2.50 at Trader Joe’s. Sourdough starter costs nothing. You can mix in bran, flax, etc. Easy, fast, delicious and economical. Each loaf will cost about $1 compared to $5.

Hey Dude and Celine Dion totally bring back memories!! Closet Celine Dion fan over here too…hehe.

Seriously though, I could never run to Freebird. Easily one of the most overplayed songs ever – I can’t even take listening to it on the radio let alone trying to run to it. I get really annoyed if I don’t like the song on when I’m working out so I’d just waste a lot of energy being angry. Plus it seems kinda long so it would just make the run seem that much longer. hehe.
Great job though. I think I run faster to music in general? Ever notice that? And ditto on the empty stomach thing.

I find that I run way better on almost empty too. As I have been saying on my blog, I have had some stomach issues lately while running and (thank Goodness) all my tests, including ultrasound show that there is nothing wrong. Perhaps I have a super sensitive stomach. Do you think I should see an RD to come up with the best things I should eat? I am very active and I don’t want to give up running.

    Lovely looking breakfast. Hearty!

How do you resist sweets? I have a terrible sweet tooth. Case in point, yesterday ,a co-worker brought in these delightful chocolate brownie cookies and then we had birthday cake. Then I made rice crispy treats (I had promised days ago to bring a dessert) for book club and some one made puppy chow. Of course a large slice of cake, a large cookie, 3 rice crispy treats and 4 handfuls of puppy chow isn’t a usual day, but I can’t figure out how to resist the tempation. How do you consistenly curb your sweet cravings and only have a small bite of desserts?

I am an avid early morning runner – running after work even though I have 4 hours to digest since lunch,I would still often cramp up. I know if I am running in the morning dinner needs to energy filled but NOT heavy.

If my run is under 6-7 Km then I don’t consume anything – between 10-12 Km I will have a cliff bar half hour before before – 12 -16 Km a cliff bar (any energy bar of your liking will do) before and also bring 1 cliff shot (or portable energy of your liking) to down around the 10-11Km mark – and if I am doing a 21Km (half mara distance) I will eat a cliff half hour before then bring 2 cliff shots to consume during the run.

I think everyone is different with their running fuel. I know I can get up eat some PB on toast then run as cramp attack will happen. I often wake at 5:45 to mow down my cliff bar if doing a long pre work run then sleep for 15 minutes more before I actually get up and get my running gear on. Simple energy is what works for me – complex carbs the day before YES – day of run – HECK NO!

It is all finding about what works for you – lots of trial and error is required!

    londonwee,
I don’t carry any water with me. I usually drink before and after pretty heavily. I just couldn’t handle the sloshing of a water belt. If I were running longer distances I would need to though, and sometimes I do stop at the YMCA for a drink on hot days if I’m nearby.

    Ambimom ,
I think I’m the only one who knows how much I am spending…..

My husband is a bread baker and that is always free. The walnut butter was a gift. We generally are very careful with the groceries we buy – only spending more on the very best “worth it” ingredients. You might want to check out my Thanksgiving Challenge posts from last November.

    Joe Tan,
Check out http://www.whfoods.com for a whole info page on flax.

    Re. pregnancy article,
I can’t share it on KERF or we couldn’t get it published, but I will certainly share it if it is. And I’ll try to share some tips from it someday when I start writing.

Melissa @ For the Love of Health,
Seeing an R.D. couldn’t hurt. But trial and error is probably your best strategy.

    jackie ,
I simply just don’t eat them! Make the decision. You are in control. Get them out of your house. I promise it gets easier with time.

    Brynn ,
Sweeeeeeeeeeet!!!! Wish I could have had it too!

    Tay ,
Yes it’s Artisana. I like it a lot. It really is just like pureed walnuts. Very fresh tasting.
