You are here: Home / Lifestyle / Happy 26th Kanz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

January 14, 2009

Happy 26th Kanz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wished him a happy birthday at 4am this morning!!

And at 5:12 my alarm went off. I must have slept well, though, because I was dreaming wild dreams when I woke up. That’s usually a sign that I’ve gotten enough.

I arrived at the gym around 5:45 and didn’t really feel like getting on the machines. Luckily it was Wednesday and I remember I used to go to athletic conditioning on Wednesdays, so I hopped over to the aerobics room and joined the class, which went from 6-7. HOLY MOLY!! What a great workout I got. I can’t remember why I stopped going to the class, but it’s been over a year since I’ve been there. The same people were still there, same instructor. It’s like I’ve been missing out over the year! I think I get burned out going to classes every week so I’m going to make this an every other week goal. We did sprints, squats, shuffles, dips, suicides, back springs, jacks, jump rope, curls, lunges, squats and LOTS of jumping. My legs are very tired!! In the 1 hour class I burned 430 calories with an average HR of 143 and a max of 181 (<– must have been during a sprint

 this !
)

I think Wednesday will also be my cereal day to use up some of our stock. I made a big ‘ol bowl this morning (and I have to say it was so nice not to have to do any dishes!)

IMG_0437 (600x800)

I tried to make it as “oatmeal like” as possible. What I love about oatmeal and hate about cereal is the eating process. I usually eat cereal really fast and there’s not much variation in the bowl. So today’s bowl was a mix of lots of things:

  • ~1/2 a cup of warmed milk
  • ~1 cup Quaker Oatmeal Squares
  • ~1/3 cup TJ’s high fiber worms
  • 1 small banana
  • 2 tbsp wheatberries
  • ~4 walnut halves
  • A few sugared peanuts
  • Spoonful Barney Butter

IMG_0440 (600x800)

That’s probably over 500 calories – this bowl better keep me full!! I do feel full now, but in a very different way than with oats. I think it’s the difference in type of fiber.

IMG_0439 (600x800)

+ chai tea

IMG_0438 (600x800)

IMG_0435 (800x600)

The husband has a welcome party for when he gets home from work!!

IMG_0441 (800x600)

(FYI, his nickname and the name that I call him 99% of the time is Kanz, which stems from Freshman year Psych class when we learned about the Bonobo Kanzi, who had “advanced linguistic aptitude” and he did a great gorilla impression after class (thanks to his furry arms 🙂 ). It stuck.) I gave my gift to him last night: tickets to see a Comedy Central taping of comedian Jon Reep on February 7! We haven’t seen Jon Reep before, but he won Last Comic Standing and it should be a fun night.

Happy birthday also to SAM, ANNA, and JENNER!!!!!!!!!

Off to start my long day!

Did you have milk in your cereal? Cereal just doesn’t usually keep me full, but fiber-one type of cereal might. a bowl of Cheerios would not keep me going, but I do like eating them.

funny nickname for hubby! happy birthday to him!

ugh – I never buy cereal anymore b/c it just does not keep me as full as oatmeal does and I need way more calories from it to make me full plus it has all those sugars.

I do buy Kashi Go lean from time to time – in fact I think I will get some this week and use it as a topping in my oatmeal, I could use the extra protein.

I love cereal, but like you I eat it too quickly. I can’t stand soggy cereal so I always eat it as fast as possible and then I’m sad because it’s gone so soon. although recently I started eating it in stages so I’ll have about 4 tiny bowls of cereal so I can eat it more slowly and it doesn’t get soggy!

Cool that you found that class again. It’s always nice to have an instructor/other people pushing you!

I think I’m relegated to cold cereal this morning too, and funny enough, I have some of your same “flavors” so I might be your food twin.

I think Jon Reep is the guy that does the, “I’m from HICK-RY!!!” bit. Any live comedy shows are fun in my book.

I’ve been reading your blog for a couple months now and I have to say, the one thing that has really stuck with me is portion size. I love how you post the photo of your entire meal. It makes me realize that I’ve been eating too much, even though I’m eating healthy foods. Thank you again for writing about this. It is great motivation for me, as a fellow athlete and nutrition nut.

Kanzi and six other bonobos are currently living at Great Ape Trust of Iowa in Des Moines, where the cutting-edge research began with Dr. Sue Savage-Rumbaugh (pictured with Kanzi) is continuing. Great Ape Trust also provides homes to six orangutans, who also are involved in non-invasive, voluntary research into their cognitive abilities and behavior.

    Kath,

I stumbled across your blog a few days ago and I really have enjoyed reading it and all the useful information you have included. I know it is sometimes creepy with blogs to have so many random people you don’t know commenting and adding in their two cents, but I truly think you have created a great resource for people. Personally I too lost about 20 pounds post college through the use of calorie counting as well as just got married in October. But I keep feeling like their is more I could be doing and healthier food choices I could make. I work out a fair amount, but I think in the past because I was only counting I was not really considering what I was eating, just how many calories is was. After our wedding I decided to stop counting, because it just made meal prep not as fun or easy, so my struggle continues to be to eat healthy and pay attention to when I am full (especially when I have a husband who does not 🙂 ). Sorry for my rambling, but I wanted to thank you for giving me some inspiration that it can be done and some insight. I even ordered a few of the books you have enjoyed so I can have some better insight into the food choices I should try to be making. Great Job!

P.S. I am jealous you live in NC, I miss Bo Jangles, even though I know it is probably the worst thing for you!

If so, go to your dashboard, then manage, then links. Click Add New, then type in the blog name and web address, then save. A link to that blog should appear under your blogroll. Hope that helps!

That’s a great nickname story — I have so many friends who worked as summer camp counselors and have strange names that don’t even fit their personalities, so it’s great to see that some camps really do let you put thought into your ‘name’ instead of just being stuck with one!
