Good Sports

We had quite the sportastic morning!!

After digestion, we set out on a run to Michelle + Ben’s where we are cat sitting for Tillman. I didn’t have on my Garmin, but I swear we ran the first mile in under 8 minutes. I was huffing and puffing! Normally it’s my legs that hold me back and my breath is fine, but today I was out of breath and my legs were strong!

The whole loop to their house and back was about 4.5 miles. Tillman was spotted under the bed and in good health!

We came home and swapped new running shoes for soccer shoes and hopped on our bikes to ride just down the road to a school with a big field.

Frisbee = $10.

Soccer ball = $6.

Exercise that doesn’t feel like exercise = Priceless.

More cheap exercise equipment! I had on my heart rate monitor and my HR was in the 150s the whole time we were playing sports. And it was nothin’ but fun.

10 minutes of frisbee. We were really good together! It took us the whole 10 minutes to get into a groove. I was surprised how much running we did while playing – in a fun "I"m going to catch this one" way.

10 minutes of soccer. Fun for me, not so much for Matt. But he’s getting better, and so am I! I’m warming up with my left foot. Gotta remember to keep that ankle locked!

We have GOT to get our friends to come join us for some sports!

Then we biked to Harris Teeter and picked up the last of the weekly produce. I feel guilty for not going to the farmer’s market but I shouldn’t. One of those green things where so long as you’re doing the best you can you shouldn’t feel guilty. I selected almost all produce with "LOCAL" sings on it, so I feel good about that.

Then we came home, totally pooped!!!!

Replenishment:

IMG_1938 (640x480)

Cinnamon Raisin Walnut with a slice of Applegate Farms turkey, laughing cow and spinach. Sweet + savory works well if you leave out the spicy mustard.

IMG_1936 (640x480)

I LOVE grapes, but more often than not they are imported, conventional grapes from South America, which I try not to buy. But these were USA organic on sale at EarthFare for a good price. Loved chompin’ on them.

IMG_1934 (640x480)

I also love Pink Lady apples, which were also on sale! I love summer fruits, but fall fruits are fun too. With some TJ’s PB

Matt’s dad + his girlfriend Cheryl are arriving any minute on their way home from a trip. They’re joining us for the afternoon and a nice dinner.

It is so very true about the grapes rarely coming from The States. In the last week I have seen some “grown in the USA” at a market here and they tasted ten times better as well.

I find kicking a soccer ball to be a great stress reliever!!!

i’m so excited for ripe apples! we’re just starting to get the new season in the stores and it’s a nice change from apples that’ve been in cold storage for 11 months!

Frisbee sounds like so much fun! At school there’s a league called Ultimate Frisbee.. kind of like football, but with a Frisbee. It’s definitely a great workout! Enjoy your dinner tonight. 🙂

Soccer and frisbee… two things I suck at 😛 I do love the idea of getting a workout in with sports though. Tennis is a great workout! Especially if you spend your time chasing after the balls 😛

LOVE that lunch Kath!!! That bread sounds so good.

And I want to say a HUGE THANK YOU for not revealing what happens in Gossip Girl… I’m working my way through Season 2 right now, so I really appreciate you keeping mum about any spoilers. Very thoughtful! 🙂

I love sweet and savory flavors together – that’s my kind of sandwich!

I know what you mean about fruit… I hold off on buying apples, pears, and oranges/grapefruits during the summer so that I have something to look forward to during the fall and winter months. Apples and pb make such a perfect pair!

the only local grapes i’ve seen around here at the farmer’s markets are concord and coronation (both pretty similar). all other grapes from this area are for wine making, i think.

i do love the concords, but sometimes cold, crunchy seedless green grapes are what i want!

    Hi Kath,

Have a question for you regarding your GH buns. I have a GH somewhat near me and they will do buns for you as a special order. I got them once (the dakota ones) and they were great, but I did weigh them just to see serving size and they are about 3oz. I notice that GH uses 2oz as a serving size in their nutritionals and that is about the right amount calorie wise for me. Does your GH make smaller ones on request or do you just get the 3oz size? Just curious as I was going to call my local GH and see if they would be willing to do a 2oz one? Thanks!

Just caught up and LOVE the trip to Brixx… I wanna go!! 🙂 I think you stand perfectly beautiful… no duck. I stand like that and tell Matt he married a hottie who is proud of her buns. If he can be proud of his GH buns we can surely be proud of ours. 🙂 Seriously you are beautiful, posture included!!!

Been a big day, gotta skoot. We are making cedar plank salmon tomorrow… so EXCITED. Also been eating many more things that I used to, I think I’m getting older and mellower and realizing lots of cool stuff. Yep, I am your old fart friend. Have a wonderful rest of the weekend. We’ll be in North Carolina in TWO weeks!!!

I agree about imported grapes — yuck. Lucky find, there! I also await juicy, in-season apples (Gala and Honeycrisp), but I must admit, it’s a LOOONG fall/winter without organic stone fruit. :'(

    Nicole of Raspberry Stethoscope,
It’s a good, heavy one. The $1 ones aren’t really for real play.

    Julia,
A bun from Great Harvest. They don’t all make them, but Matt’s store does with extra dough.

    Megs,
    Disc 4, Epi. 1 or 2?

    Jonna,
Mine are def. 3oz or so. I eat them 🙂 Their breads are about 75 calories per ounce in general, so about 225 calories of super nutritious whole grains per bun.

    polly,
HI!!! Can’t wait for you to come eat at Brixx with us!

Thanks Kath. When I think about it, you are right about how nutritious they are for you! I plan to order again, I froze a bunch last time and found they are just like fresh when defrosted. I have some slice in the freezer and must get through those first. Our GH does limited types of breads each day and a few special monthly breads. I wish they did some of the others you have mentioned. Have a great night! Thanks again.

Do they have any (casual type leagues) where you are? Here in the city (which I know is a lot bigger than where you are) we have a whole bunch of clubs where you can play anything from soccer to kickball – mostly just for fun. That might be more structured than you’re looking for though.

Someone else mentioned Ultimate Frisbee, but I just wanted to second the recommendation. Anyone who likes running and throwing the disc (frisbee) would be an ideal candidate for Ultimate. It is an awesome workout and usually draws a friendly crowd. Most large cities have seasonal leagues which are great for learning the rules. Have fun!
