Fun With Friends

Today was 100% work – and I think I’m done with my project!! I still have to proofread the whole thing, but the hard part is over. The cost analysis and standardizing 6 recipes was PAINFUL! I didn’t move from 11am to 6pm.

Except to eat a quick lunch at 3 –

IMG_4101 (1024x768)

Tempeh + Pumpkin Butter on a GH Walnut Raisin Bun

IMG_4098 (1024x768)

Carrots + more pumpkin butter + Barney Butter

IMG_4099 (1024x768)

+ Kashis

IMG_4100 (1024x768)

IMG_4097 (1024x768)

And a yogurt + cereal combo around 5:30p

IMG_4102 (1024x768)

I finished my project just as it was time to leave. I barely had time to put on some make-up and a nicer outfit –

IMG_4105 (1024x768)

Before dinner with Karen and the gang!

IMG_4107 (1024x768)

IMG_4108 (1024x768)

We met of friends at Mama Ricotta’s, a classic Charlotte Italian restaurant. Because I am so tired, I’ll leave you with a photo recap of all the delectable bites 🙂

IMG_4111 (1024x768)

Starting with my chewy wine –

IMG_4109 (1024x768)

IMG_4112 (1024x768)

IMG_4113 (1024x768)

IMG_4114 (1024x768)

Shared this 3 ways

IMG_4118 (1024x768)

My portion

IMG_4120 (1024x768)

More

IMG_4122 (1024x768)

Bread (had more nibbles at the end of the night!)

IMG_4121 (1024x768)

Kanz’s entree

IMG_4124 (1024x768)

Shared bites (I didn’t get an entree – just had portions of Matt + Karen’s)

IMG_4125 (1024x768)

+ Kate’s pizza

IMG_4126 (1024x768)

We moved on to our next location: Crave, a new dessert bar uptown. At first, we were very impressed.

IMG_4128 (1024x768)

Cheese!

IMG_4129 (1024x768)

I got a fabulous muscat

IMG_4131 (1024x768)

He got port, which we all sipped –

IMG_4132 (1024x768)

And we ordered this Bourbon Vanilla Layer Cake

IMG_4135 (1024x768)

For the first time,I preferred the cake to the icing. The cake was  moist and dense, but the icing tasted like crisco. I still ate about 1/3 of it though. ‘Twas still good!

IMG_4133 (1024x768)

But then the service…..was horrible. Kate + Nate + Michelle + Ben didn’t even get their desserts. They went through 3 orders, each which took 15 minutes, before they found out the restaurant was out of stock. It was bad. We were there for about 2.5 hours. The company was jovial, but I think this place isn’t into its groove yet.

Needless to say, I’m exhausted. Can’t wait for a fun morning full of biking + running + breakfast until I have to spend the afternoon doing more Foodservice – a management continuum timeline.

Nite!

I’m still waiting on my dessert. Maybe I can pick it up tomorrow. Perhaps it’ll be ready at noon or so. Thanks for the pictures. My mom will enjoy this post.

You look so pretty fancied up in the all-black ensemble! 🙂 I’ve been dying to try an all-dessert bar myself, but that’s really too bad about the cruddy service at the one you visited. 🙁

Hope the rest of the project goes smoothly!

Oh no! A dessert bar with no desserts…they need to work on that. A night out is always a good way to cap off a day of hard work.

Hey Kath-This is the most important part of your post:

“The company was jovial, ” In my opinion. You are so positive and it is so RARE for us to hear bad reviews of a place that you dine at, but here you give a very validating reason and are still compassionate in understanding the restaurant’s cons.

The raisin looks yummy- that walnut raisin bun has my name ALL over it!!

Gorgeous outfit! Sorry the cake was a bust- ‘buttercreme’ frosting is super-simple to make, and stays perfect at room temperature for ages, but that still doesn’t justify its existence, in my opinion.

I have a question – is there a textbook you’re using or resources that would be available for the class you’re doing all of this design and costing work for? It sounds like that would be a really great thing for me to work through for myself (as costing new recipes/products is really driving me nuts) – can you make any recommendations?

(taking an entire class in it is less optimal, for time-constrained reasons, but if it’s the only choice I’ll probably bite the bullet one of these days and do it)

    Thanks 🙂

    Tracey C,
Actually, our textbooks are very vague. We have to figure most of this all out on our own! I wouldn’t recommend either textbook – they are more about equipment and layout. If you google “Cost Analysis” you’ll find some other assignments on the internet that give templates and stuff. I used those to research my template.

That sounds like a fun night, minus the service mishap. We have a similar dessert-only place here in Boston called Finale. It’s pretty yummy, but I’ve had better desserts at places that don’t specialize in it. It’s still worth it, though!
