Breakfast For One

I let myself awaken naturally this morning – but I still set an alarm just so I wouldn’t sleep the day away. I woke up naturally around 6:55am and the alarm went off at 7. Perfect!!

The plan was to go to the gym first thing, but we took a while to get going. I decided my stomach was starting to growl so I had a little snack before we left: Optimum Slim in a little soy milk.

IMG_4089 (800x600)

We pedaled away to the gym on our bikes (it’s 2.5 miles there and takes about 15-20 minutes, depending on the day). Once there I was lucky to find an elliptical next to a sunny window and spent 30 minutes reading Health. Then we reconviened for some lifting: cables (biceps, triceps), alternating pullups + pushups and finally a little shoulders with free weights. Then we biked home.

Since many of you have been inquiring about my stats, here’s today’s workout. I’ll try to get in a run stat soon too.

Time: 1:29 (this includes the biking as transportation)

Time in zone (I think that means over 120 bpm for me?): 50:57

Max HR: 157 (probably sometime on the ET)

Avg HR: 120 (lifting and biking brings it down)

Calories burned: 501

Once home and showered, it was 10:30! Matt, Nate, Kate, Justin, Diana and Dan are all going to a brewery today. It’s painful to miss out, but I have to get work done because my parents are coming next weekend and I don’t think driving 2 hours to drink beer for 2 hours would be very conducive to studying. Although I will miss my friends! It’s cool though, because we’re all meeting tonight for dessert and drinks at a new place.

SO, point of the story is that Matt had to rush to leave and gobbled down his oatmeal leaving the romantic set up I put out just for me to enjoy:

But the oats made excellent company

 this !

IMG_4092 (800x600)

The mix:

  • 1/3 cup oats, milk, water, half banana, pinch salt, splash vanilla
  • 1/4 crumbled Banana Almond Great Harvest Muffin
  • Sprinkle flax
  • Spoonful Maranatha Almond Butter

IMG_4094 (800x600)

Plus tea! English breakfast with milk.

I’ve got my laptop out here and am planning to work at this table all day long. Not sure what to do about lunch since we’re still out of groceries. I’ll be replenishing tomorrow!

Look at your yard! How I long for some grass and trees in my downtown, urban life. I want to buy a house, just so I can have a yard- I don’t need more space.

So… care to share the recipe to the Grabanzo Bean burgers? They look deelish!

yes…but! don’t forget, exercise science research has shown that lifting has a much higher caloric burn after the exercise has ended. you will continue to burn calories at a higher rate for several hours post lifting plus your increased muscle mass will help your body burn more calories durning non-exercise. with cardio, the burn stops when the exercise stops although you do burn a lot during intense aerobic exercise. so a drop in heart rate during lifting is nothin’ to fear (not that you do, kath, just in case some readers might get the impression that the lowered heart rate is bad).

but i’m a weights and pylometrics girl myself (only 20 lbs away from benching my body weight @ 105 lbs! woot!) i’m 27 today, so that is my goal for my new year, bench me. 🙂

I saw a show that talked about your website…I have never “blogged” before, but you were so inspirational to me. I am the mom of two and 25lbs over a healthy weight…I can’t seem to get motivated and am certainly a stress eater… I am willing to try whatever it takes. I guess support is a big part of it. Maybe visiting you will help. Thanks:)

I’m guessing you’ve answered this question before, but I hope you won’t mind answering it again! What is an assisted pull-up machine exactly? Do you know if most gyms have them? I’m just curious because I’ve never been able to do “real” pull-ups but they seem like such a good arm workout.

And then on a completely different topic, I’ve been reading your blog for about a year and really appreciate all the time you put into it…I think that your consistent, detailed posts, travel accounts, and quick responses to readers are a big part of what makes your blog so successful…the Africa posts, for example, were incredible and must have taken so much time to put together. Alright, I guess I could stop taking over your entire wall…

Wise choice on skipping the brewery. How much do you retain after a beer…or two hours worth? I’m sure I’ve flipped through a stack of flashcards while drinking a time or two…

    Hey elizabeth–

If you go to self.com or womenshealthmag.com, there are tons of workouts using all kinds of simple equipment, or sometimes no equipment at all!

Kath–I feel you on craving fruit! I’m due for a grocery run and dying over here…the warming weather doesn’t help to keep down my desire for fruit.

    Welcome!

    Rachel ,
The assisted machine has a little platform that you put your knees on that “helps” you up and down. You can adjust how much help you get. I usually do between 65-80lbs, depending on the day.
