Fruitastic

DSC02268

Another fruit-filled morning in the KERF Household. For some reason I have been sleeping a lot lately. I think I’m just used to a new wake-up time but am still going to bed relatively early. I don’t like sleeping that long but I don’t wake up! Perhaps I need to start setting an alarm.

I was craving cold cereal this morning so I had some Organic Morning Lite with TJ’s High Fiber (the worms) plus about a cup of fresh berries and half a banana, all in around 3/4 a cup of 1% milk. Oh, and a tbsp of ground flax on top! I switched to 1% this week because I think that tiny bit of fat makes such a difference in taste.

We’re waiting to digest and then we’re off on a long run on the Greenway!

    Hi Kath,

I have a questions about flax. I just recently started adding it to my diet and now I’m obsessed! I know you are supposed to store it in the fridge or freezer, but how do you know if it’s gone bad. Is it a taste thing? Also, if it is “bad” does that mean it’s unsafe to eat or just lacking in the nutritional benefits.

    Enjoy your Sunday!

How long do you wait to digest a full meal???? I know you eat a quick small snack before going for a run sometimes – that sounds more appealing to me.

i completely agree about the 1% milk! i recently made the switch as well. i think it is well worth the small amount of saturated fat, especially since i don’t use much of it at a time.

I also love adding “tastic” to words. It’s fun. 🙂

Adding flax to my cold cereal has made SUCH a big difference in its level of satiety. Without it I get hungry like an hour after eating, but with the flax it holds me over 3-4 hours. I also love adding WHEATBERRIES! to my cold cereal. It gives it an amazing chew and also helps in holding me over longer from the protein. You should try it sometime!

Hey kath – your breakfast looks yummy!

Re your comment about sleeping more recently – I go through phases – sometimes I sleep loads and really deeply and then periods where I can’t get to sleep and my sleep is really disturbed. Its strange! I don’t pay much attention to it as I just let my body do what it wants, but its so frustrating when I can’t sleep.

I also just switched back to 1%. I think it makes a big difference in how long I stay satisfied. And yay for flax seed! I add it to everything!

    HangryPants ,
I’m actually not sure what happens when flax goes rancid because mine never has. My guess is it’s a gradual thing rather than one day it’s good, one day it’s bad. I know most fats are best consumed immediately so if it’s been 6 months and it still smells OK, it probably wont’ hurt but you’re not getting all the benefits either.

    yadi,
I usually wait about 2-3 hours, depending on what I’ve had. Sometimes I wake up and just want to hang around for a while and workout when I’m loosened up. And sometimes I’ve got to run from my bed out the door. But if I have the time, I prefer to have a big breakfast first and workout in the hour or so before lunch.

    Alli W.,
Where in NC did you move?!

    Hi Kath,

Those blueberries look delicious! I make my boys go blueberry picking with me every summer. They now hate it but I love it and they love their mom so they go with me!
